Dr. Sharmila Fagoonee (Ph.D.) is a Researcher at the Institute of Biostructure and Bioimaging of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Turin, Italy. She obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) in Biology from the University of Mauritius and her M.Sc. in Cellular Biology and Physiology: Molecular Biology and Genetics from Université Victor Segalen, Bordeaux, France. She subsequently earned her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology, as well as an additional M.Sc. in Molecular Biotechnology, from the University of Turin, Italy. Following postdoctoral training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, Dr. Fagoonee established her research in regenerative medicine. Her early work focused on the differentiation potential of murine pluripotent spermatogonial stem cells into functional hepatocytes, both in vitro and in vivo. Currently, her research at CNR centers on the identification of novel therapies and biomarkers for chronic liver diseases, with particular emphasis on the role of the RNA-binding protein ESRP1 in hepatic and intestinal pathogenesis. Dr. Fagoonee has been coordinator and lecturer of the Master’s course in Stem Cells, Regenerative Medicine and Cell Factory Management at the University of Turin, and is actively involved as an editorial board member and reviewer for several international scientific journals. In addition to her academic work, she is engaged in community outreach initiatives, including the promotion of research and social support through a volunteer project at the University of Turin.
