Dr. Johnson Rajasingh, MPhil, PhD, HCLD (ABB), is a Professor in the Department of Bioscience Research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), Memphis, Tennessee, with secondary appointments in the Department of Medicine (Cardiology) and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Biochemistry. His research is dedicated to advancing regenerative medicine through innovative stem cell- and exosome-based therapies for the repair and regeneration of heart, lung, and oral tissues, with a particular emphasis on translating basic scientific discoveries into clinically relevant treatments. What distinguishes his work is the development of safe, non-integrating mRNA-based cellular reprogramming technologies that generate patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for regenerative applications. Dr. Rajasingh completed postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, and Northwestern University before joining the University of Illinois at Chicago as an Assistant Professor in 2008. He subsequently joined UTHSC, where he has established a nationally recognized research program in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. His laboratory has pioneered methods for reprogramming normal and patient-derived somatic cells into iPSCs and directing their differentiation into specialized cell types, including cardiomyocytes, mesenchymal stem cells, neuronal progenitor cells, osteoblasts, and odontoblasts. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications as a first author, senior author, or corresponding author in leading scientific journals, with over 4,800 citations and a strong scholarly impact reflected in his Google Scholar profile. He has delivered numerous invited presentations at national and international scientific conferences and has received several prestigious awards and grants, including funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Heart Association (AHA), and other competitive agencies. He is an active member of several professional scientific organizations dedicated to cardiovascular research, stem cell biology, and regenerative medicine. In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Rajasingh serves the scientific community through extensive peer-review activities for numerous high-impact journals and funding agencies. He has reviewed hundreds of scientific manuscripts and grant applications and has contributed editorials, commentaries, and invited reviews that have helped shape emerging directions in regenerative medicine and stem cell research. Dr. Rajasingh’s long-term professional goal is to develop transformative regenerative therapies for cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and craniofacial diseases. His current research focuses on stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs/exosomes), mitochondrial transfer, RNA biology, epigenetic regulation, and iPSC-based disease modeling to improve tissue repair and functional recovery in degenerative conditions. Throughout his career, Dr. Rajasingh has demonstrated exceptional professional skills in leadership, mentorship, communication, project management, and scientific problem-solving. As a tenured professor and research leader, he has successfully mentored undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and junior faculty members. He is recognized for fostering collaborative multidisciplinary research teams and promoting an inclusive, supportive, and innovative research environment. Outside of his professional activities, Dr. Rajasingh enjoys mentoring young scientists, participating in scientific outreach and educational activities, traveling, reading scientific literature, and spending time with family and friends while exploring advances in biomedical science and technology.
