Post-doctoral Training: 1986 -1991. Residency in Internal Medicine, University Hospital “P. Giaccone”, Palermo, Italy. Academic titles: 2016 – present, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, University of Palermo 2002 – present, Member of the teaching staff, Internal Medicine Residency Program, University of Palermo, School of Medicine, Palermo, Italy 2002 – present, Teacher of Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine School, University of Palermo 2006-2019, Member of the teaching staff, PhD courses in Clinical Medicine and Behavioral Science, University of Palermo. 2014 - present, Member of the teaching staff, Geriatric Residency Program, University of Palermo, School of Medicine, (University of Palermo) 2019 - 2022, Coordinator of the Master’s Degree Course in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences (University of Palermo) 2022 - present, Coordinator of the Bachelor’s in Nursing (University of Palermo) 2015 - 2024, Member of the Scientific Council of the Library Center of the School of Medicine (University of Palermo) 2025 – present, President of the Scientific Council of the Library Center of the School of Medicine of University of Palermo (University of Palermo) The main academic activities consist in being: a) Teacher for students in Medicine School and in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Residency program. b) Coordinator of bachelor’s in nursing. In recent years my main academic activity was focused on the treatment and study of liver diseases (with viral and metabolic etiology), gastroenterological diseases (Malabsorption syndromes) and metabolic diseases, on the relationships between lipid metabolism, diabetes, obesity and liver disease (MAFLD/MASH/ Cirrhosis, HCC). The main specificity is however in ultrasonographic diagnostics. In this sector and in the study of liver steatosis my specific ultrasonographic knowledge has allowed deepen the study of liver diseases in the metabolic field. I am Member of SIUMB (Italian Society in Ultrasound In medicine and Biology) specifically member of the Executive Board in 2014-18. Thanks to the knowledge in the ultrasound field and the specific scientific activity, I was invited to participate in Consensus for the drafting of guidelines: a) Consensus Conference Rome, November 2017: SIUMB guidelines and recommendations for the correct use of ultrasound in the management of patients with focal liver disease (J Ultrasound . 2019 Mar;22(1):41-51.) b) Consensus Conference Roma, November 2019: SIUMB recommendations for focal pancreatic lesions (J Ultrasound . 2020 Dec;23(4):599-606). c) Guidelines: "Benign hepatic tumor lesions". Multisocietary Guidelines Working Group: (Dig Liver Dis. 2022 Nov;54(11):1469-1478. doi: 10.1016/j.dld.2022.08.030; Dig Liver Dis. 2022 Dec;54(12):1614-1622). I have conducted the multicenter study of the Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis (SISA) on the ultrasound prevalence of NAFLD in patients with metabolic syndrome and on the relationship between steatosis and lipid profile (Acta Diabetol. 2013 Apr;50(2):241-9. Ultrasound Med Biol. 2015 Jun;41(6):1545-52.). My scientific activity has resulted to date in 357 publications listed on Google Scholar, of which 15% are as first author, 15% as last author, 10% as second author. H Index Google Scholar 44. Citations 7914. He produced 4 Editorials. I was co-author of a study on cow's milk protein allergy published in the prestigious magazine New England Journal of Medicine 339 (16), 1100-1104 (Impact factor 2023. 96.2). In 2009 I was awarded the “Ellis Barnet“ prize for the most outstanding paper with an ultrasound content published by “Clinical Radiology”, the official journal of “The Royal College of Radiologists”: “Reliability of the bright liver echo pattern in diagnosing steatosis in patients with cryptogenic and HCV-related hypertransaminasaemia”. I has been invited as a speaker at National and International Conferences. I have coordinated the 28th National SIUMB Congress (Rome 2021). Scientific Societies: Memberships, Offices and Committee assignments: Italian Society of Internal Medicine (SIMI), Member, Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF), Member, Italian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology ( SIUMB), Member 1991 – present, Chair of the “Ultrasound in geriatric practice and chest ultrasound” Study Section, 2009 , advisor of the “Ultrasound in geriatric medicine and chest ultrasound” Study Section, 2010-12, Member of the Board of Directors, 2013-2017, Member of Research Commission, 2018-2022, Coordinator of the G-SIUMB (group of young SIUMB members), 2014-2021 The significant epidemiological increase in obesity, metabolic diseases (Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes) have oriented research activity towards this sector. I have therefore further developed the study of hepatic steatosis using elastographic methods in the quantification of steatosis, in the definition stage of fibrosis and portal hypertension. For some years I have been working on the usefulness of nutraceutical products in this sector. In particular, thanks to the production of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in the geographical area where I live (Sicily), I have been studying the effects of EVOO on hepatic metabolism, steatosis, on atherosclerotic disease and the role it can have in changing the microbiome. I have Participated in Funded Research Projects a) National Operational Programme (PON), Project “Di.Me.Sa. “Promotion of the typical products of the Mediterranean diet and their use for health and nutraceutical aims”; b) “Administration of health oils to patients with metabolic syndrome Administration of health oils to patients with metabolic syndrome”); c) Impact of EVOO with health properties in improving overall health status and preventing cardiovascular risk in Metabolic Syndrome. For many years my activity has been dedicated to research and teaching. I am able to establish an empathy with young colleagues and to support and encourage them in scientific research and in the writing of their scientific works. This also allows me to have a good evaluation capacity as a reviewer. The experience in the Scientific Council of the Library Center of the Medicine School (University of Palermo) has allowed me to get to know better several scientific journals and their quality. I love nature, especially mountains, both in winter and summer. I find walking in the nature particularly relaxing. A hobby I cannot give up is reading detective novels.
