Neal Shahidi is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia with a focus on endoscopic resection techniques (endoscopic mucosal resection [EMR], endoscopic submucosal dissection [ESD], cold snare resection [CSR]), third space endoscopy (peroral endoscopic myotomy [POEM] and POEM variants), Barrett's Esophagus, Atrophic gastritis/gastric intestinal metaplasia, polyposis/hereditary cancer syndromes. He is a staff Gastroenterologist at his primary site, St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver Canada, as well as Mount Saint Joseph's Hospital in Vancouver Canada. He is the co-founder of the St. Paul’s Hospital Advanced Endoscopic Resection Centre (SPARC). He completed his medical degree (MD), Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of British Columbia in 2013, 2016 and 2018, respectively. He then completed his interventional endoscopy fellowship at Westmead Hospital in Sydney Australia in 2020 and his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Sydney in 2023. This coincided with the completion of the University of British Columbia clinician investigator program in 2020. He is a Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar and is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; having published over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts/book chapters and 110 conference abstracts; focusing on the application of minimally invasive endoscopic resection techniques for early gastrointestinal neoplasia. Academic contributions have largely focused on refining the application of EMR and ESD for large non-pedunculated colorectal polyps (LNPCPs); including optimizing outcomes for complex LNPCPs such as LNPCPs at the anorectal junction and previously attempted LNPCPs, optimizing the application of pre-resection optical evaluation of LNPCPs and delineating a selective resection algorithm for large non-pedunculated rectal polyps. He is the Gastroenterology site lead for Mount Saint Joseph's Hospital and serves on the Residency Training Committee for the University of British Columbia Adult Gastroenterology fellowship. He actively serves on American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) endoscopy-related committees.
