Dr. Umberto Vespasiani-Gentilucci, MD, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Vice-Coordinator of the PhD Program in Integrated Biomedical Sciences and Bioethics and Vice-Director of the Schools of Specialization in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Rome, Italy. He also serves as an Assistant Medical Director in Internal Medicine and Hepatology at Fondazione Policlinico Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Rome, Italy. His research primarily focuses on the mechanisms underlying liver diseases, particularly metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). His scientific interest extends to cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, with a strong emphasis on identifying non-invasive biomarkers for liver fibrosis and assessing novel therapeutic strategies. Dr. Vespasiani-Gentilucci is known for integrating clinical research with molecular biology to identify novel therapeutic targets and predictive biomarkers for liver steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. His expertise is recognized at both national and international levels, where he actively participates as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in several multicenter clinical trials. Dr. Vespasiani-Gentilucci has published over 200 articles in prestigious scientific journals, including Nature Medicine, Journal of Hepatology, Hepatology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Liver International. His work has been cited extensively, contributing to an H-index of 37 on Scopus (accessed May 12th, 2025). He has been invited to speak at numerous international conferences, highlighting his expertise in the field of hepatology and metabolic liver diseases. Dr. Vespasiani-Gentilucci is recognized for his exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, which have been instrumental in his academic and scientific roles. He is an active member of several scientific societies, including the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) and the Italian PBC Registry, in both of which he is part of the Steering Committee. Additionally, he is an Editorial Board Member for the World Journal of Hepatology, PLOS ONE, and Nutrigenomics (Frontiers in Genetics and Nutrition). As a dedicated educator, Dr. Vespasiani-Gentilucci has been involved in teaching activities at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma for over 15 years, mentoring medical students and junior researchers in Internal Medicine and Hepatology. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Vespasiani-Gentilucci enjoys running and spending time with his family.
