With a medical degree at Fourth military medical university, upon his PhD in 2004 at Third military medical university in China, Weidong Tong was nominated a permanent professorship at Faculty of Surgery in Daping hospital. From 2008 to 2010, he spent the time in Mayo clinic and Medical College of Wisconsin, as a visiting clinician, he studied on adaptation mechanism of colorectal motility following pelvic nerves denervation. Over the last 20 years, he has focused his scientific interests on the topics related to colorectal disorders including cancer and constipation. He does more than 200 laparoscopic and robotic colorectal operations every year, and his patients with constipation come from nationwide. His main research direction is enteric nervous system and colorectal motility disorders. With his expertise in colorectal surgery and related research, he has published numerous SCI journal papers and book chapters, edited/reviewed for many academic journals, served as an evaluation expert for organizations such as Chinese Academy of Sciences, and received many academic honors including Chongqing scientific Award  and PLA medicine progress Award. Innovative, translational and longstanding research has ever been a pursuit in his academic career.
