I am John K. Triantafillidis, an Associate Professor (Honorary) at Iasi University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania. I graduated from the Medical School of Athens University, Greece (Degree: excellent). My Medical Thesis was also conducted at the University of Athens, Medical School (Degree: excellent). In 1981, with a grant awarded to me from the Board of Governors of “Evangelismos” Hospital, I visited the United Kingdom. I worked as a research fellow for one year with Professor Derek Jewell at the University of Oxford. After my return to Greece, I was appointed director of the Department of Gastroenterology of “Metaxas” Cancer Hospital, Piraeus, Greece (1986-1991). During the six years I spent at the “Metaxas” hospital, I tried hard to transform it into a modern gastroenterology department oriented exclusively to digestive oncology. The experience I obtained from my service in the above-mentioned cancer hospital was, in fact, the main reason for the creation of my interest in digestive oncology. From 1991 until 2013, I was director of the department of Gastroenterology of “Saint Panteleimon” General Hospital, Nicea, Greece. In 1995, I spent four months as a visiting Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. During all these years, apart from educating young trainee doctors in gastroenterology and doing daily clinical work, I was actively involved in clinical and basic research. My main scientific interests are inflammatory bowel disease and the oncology of the digestive tract. I was President of the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology, the Hellenic Society of Digestive Oncology, the Hellenic Helicobacter Pylori Study Group, and the Hellenic Inflammatory Bowel Disease Study Group. I am a member of several National and International Medical Societies, including the American College of Gastroenterology and the British Medical Association. I am the Editor of 21 books, including “Inflammatory Bowel Disease,” “Gastrointestinal Lymphomas,” and “Digestive Oncology” (Award of the Hellenic National Academy of Sciences 1991). So far, more than 5,700 Citations of my scientific work have appeared in the international medical literature. Since 2013, my position has been in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit, "Metropolitan General" Hospital, Holargos, Athens, Greece. I translated many books in the Greek language, including “The acute abdomen” (ed. De Dombal UK), “Diseases of the Gut and Pancreas” (Ed. Miscievitz et al, UK), etc. I am also the author of many books, including the book “Digestive Oncology” (award of the Athens Academy) and the book “Inflammatory Bowel Disease”. I have translated many books into Greek. In 1988, along with Paris Kosmidis, we founded the Hellenic Society of Digestive Oncology. I was the Editor of “Annals of Gastroenterology,” the official journal of the Greek Society of Gastroenterology (1996- 2010), and also Editor of “Digestive Oncology,” the official publication of the Hellenic Society of Digestive Oncology (2000-2010). I was President of the Organizing and Scientific Committees of many Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology congresses, including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th International Congresses of Digestive Oncology. As President of the Greek Society of Gastroenterology, I continued my efforts to improve gastroenterology in Greece, being an effortless laborer and scientist. Now I have the unique happiness of cooperating in the scientific field with two of my four daughters, who are pharmacists. I was President of the Organizing Committee of dozens of International and Greek medical Congresses. Since 2002, I have been a Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. I serve as a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journals Biomedicines, Case Reports in Internal Medicine, Frontiers in Gastroenterology, International Journal of Pharmaceutical & Research Science, Journal of Gastroenterology Research, Journal of Gastroenterology Liver & Pancreatic Diseases, Journal of General Practice, Scientific pages in Gastroenterology, SciTz Gastroenterology, The Open Colorectal Cancer Journal, and World Journal of Gastroenterology. I am the author of 256 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and more than 259 papers in the Greek medical literature. Twenty-four of my studies have received first, second, and third prizes at national medical conferences. The Hellenic Gastroenterological Society honored me with a special award for my book “Digestive Oncology,” which was awarded by the National Academy of Athens. Over about 40 years, I served as a reviewer for 151 international medical journals, including World Journal of Gastroenterology (Editor), Biomedicins (Editor), Nutrients (Guest Editor), Inflammatory Bowel Disease, PLOS One, etc.. A total of 535 scientific studies were reviewed. I was also a permanent reviewer of abstracts submitted to the European Conference on Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease, organized by the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization. I also reviewed grant proposals, including the Poland National Science Center, Cancer Research Fellowship, UK, ECCO Grant application, and Cancer Research UK Fellowship Grant Application. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, the first screening of the normal population for colorectal cancer in our country was carried out with an immunochemical test to detect faecal haemoglobin. The screening included more than 7,000 people aged 55 years and older in three country regions. The results were published in the journal Annals of Gastroenterology. I participated as an invited speaker in 33 roundtable discussions and gave 11 lectures at international congresses. During all these years of clinical and research experience, I have improved my critical thinking skills, active listening, communication, interpersonal relationship development, management of gastroenterology departments, training of residents and students, and problem-solving abilities. I graduated from the National School of Byzantine Music of Athens and continued to be actively involved in this music by studying and performing. Gardening has been another one of my favorite hobbies since the early years of my life.
