Luca Pastorelli got his MD degree in 2002 at the University of Milan; from the beginning, he developed a strong interest in basic sciences, with a particular focus on gastrointestinal epithelial cell biology.  After obtaining the specialty in Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy on November 2006, he started a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Milan working on the role of epithelial cells in gastrointestinal inflammation and in 2007 he entered a PhD program at the University of Bologna. During his PhD, he spent more than 2 years (December 2007-May 2010) working as a Research Associate at University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA, USA) and, later, at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH, USA), working on the role of the novel cytokine, IL-33, in inflammatory bowel diseases, on the role of intestinal permeability in intestinal inflammation and also on the characterization of gastric inflammation in SAMP1/YitFc mice, a spontaneous model of Crohn’s like enteritis.  In 2010 he came back to Italy, working at the University of Milan and practicing clinical gastroenterology at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato as consultant gastroenterologist and endoscopist in the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit. In November 2017 he became Head of Gastroenterology Unit at same institution. In September 2011 he got his PhD degree at the University of Bologna; he started another post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Milan and, there, obtained the position of Assistant Professor in April 2013 and became Associate Professor in July 2019. He is focusing his research activity on the role of pro-inflammatory molecules and epithelial cell in gastrointestinal inflammation and on several clinical aspects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Microscopic Colitis.
