With a medical degree in University of NSW, Sydney in 1968, he underwent Surgical training and then undertook research for which he received a MD in 1983. His main interests were related to pancreatico-biliary surgery and perioperative care. Some of his articles on preoperative biliary drainage and nutritional care have had over 100 citations in the literature. After managing a number of cases of pancreatic cancer with curative surgical intent he with a median survival of 20 months and 5 year survival of 20 percent he wished to make a difference in the long term outcome. He established a research laboratory to try and understand the reason for the aggressive outcome of this cancer and investigate ways of improving this. This laboratory continues to make contributions to the literature and has used proteomic and genomic methodology. His studies have included understanding of cholangiocarcinoma, oesophago-gastric carcinoma. He has authored 150 peer reviewed research articles, 5 chapters and 4 patents. He is currently Chairman of the NSW Oncology Advisory Group, The Australasian Pancreatic Club, The cancer Surgery Research Foundation and Head of the Cancer Research Laboratory at the Kolling Institute. He is professor Emeritus at The University of Sydney.
