Editorial Board Member of World Journal of Gastroenterology, Stanislav Sitkin, MD, PhD, is the Head of Functional Metabolomics and Human Microbiome Research Group at the Almazov National Medical Research Centre and an Associate Professor at the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov in St. Petersburg, Russia. He combines his work as an academic researcher with that of a practicing gastroenterologist. Dr. Sitkin graduated from the Riga Medical Institute (now Riga Stradins University, Latvia) in 1986. He received his Ph.D. in 1990 and Dr. med. in 1994. He has published more than 300 research papers. His current research interests include the human microbiome, diet-microbiota-host interactions, molecular mechanisms and targets in gastrointestinal and liver diseases, metabolomics, the search for novel biomarkers among microbial and human metabolites, and the discovery of novel nutritional (food supplements, probiotics, prebiotics, dietary fiber, postbiotics) and therapeutic agents for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic liver disease, metabolic disorders, gynecological and pediatric diseases. He was awarded the National Society of Inventors and Innovators Award and the Certificate of Merit of the Russian National Medical Chamber. He is the current General Secretary of the Gastroenterological Scientific Society of Russia and the current Vice President of the Russian IBD Study Society.
