My name is Iva Suman (previously Iva Potočnjak), and I am working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia. I earned her PhD in Biomedicine in 2020. In my thesis, I described signaling mechanisms that are involved in cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury and the interplay of phytochemicals in the modification of oxidative stress, apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammation caused by chemotherapy. For my PhD I worked with Professor Robert Domitrović on his projects: “The interaction of phytochemicals and drugs in vivo: modulation of nephrotoxicity of cisplatin” and “The interaction of phytochemicals and drugs in vitro and in vivo: role of FOXO signaling pathway”. My first individual project, “Modulation of MEK-ERK MAPK signalling pathway in CP-induced mitophagy in kidneys”, was funded by the University of Rijeka, and I got an opportunity to lead it as a young scientist. I am currently the Principal investigator of my two projects: "Mitochondrial transfer mediated by ERK: a new therapeutic approach in the treatment of disease" and ERK inhibitors as a novel therapy in kidney mitochondrial dysfunction. Over the past 10 years, I have made significant contributions to the fields of biochemistry, pharmacology, cell biology, and drug development through my research, publications, and participation in scientific projects. I established new methods and laboratories at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Clinical Chemistry. My work focuses on acute kidney injury, mitochondria, and cancer, including molecular mechanisms involved in the disease, with an emphasis on developing novel therapeutic agents and studying possible modifications of molecular mechanisms of diseases. Until today, I have published 17 scientific papers, of which 12 were as the first author. My h-index is 14, and my work has been cited over 1000 times. My obsession and hobby are Mitochondria and everything about them.
