Dr. Xianfang Wu, PhD, is an Associate Staff Scientist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Infection Biology at the Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic, and holds a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor of Molecular Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. His research focuses on understanding how intrinsic cellular stress and metabolic pathways shape host–virus interactions and chronic liver disease progression, with a particular emphasis on hepatitis B virus (HBV), fatty liver diseases, and intrinsic antiviral immunity; his work is distinguished by the development and application of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)–derived multicellular liver models that enable mechanistic studies not feasible in traditional animal systems. Dr. Wu has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed research articles in leading journals in hepatology, virology, and cell biology, has delivered more than 10 invited or contributed talks at international scientific conferences, and his work has received over 3,500 citations, with a current Google Scholar h-index of 24; his contributions have been recognized through NIH K99, NIH DP2 grants, and he maintains active membership in professional societies including [e.g., AASLD, ASV, ISSCR]. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Wu has made sustained contributions to the academic publishing community, having peer reviewed 100+ manuscripts for international journals in hepatology, virology, and molecular medicine, and has served as an editorial board member for Journal of Virology. Looking ahead, Dr. Wu’s long-term research program aims to define stress-regulated, interferon-independent antiviral defense mechanisms in human tissues and to leverage advanced human stem cell–based platforms to investigate the interplay between viral infection, metabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis in chronic liver diseases. He brings a diverse set of professional skills to his work, including strong scientific leadership, interdisciplinary communication, effective mentoring of trainees at multiple career stages, collaborative project management, and rigorous problem-solving in both experimental design and data interpretation. Outside the laboratory, Dr. Wu enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, reading scientific literature beyond his immediate field, and engaging in creative problem-solving activities that foster both personal growth and professional inspiration.
