I am Dr. Rakesh Kumar Pilania, DM, currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Pediatric Allergy Immunology Unit, Advanced Pediatrics Centre, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. I hold a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and an MD in Pediatrics, both from PGIMER. In 2019, I was awarded two prestigious international fellowships. I completed a Short-Term Fellowship by the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) under the mentorship of Prof. Isabelle Meyts at University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium, where I trained in Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEIs). Later that year, I pursued an International Fellowship by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA) at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Weill Cornell University, New York, USA, with a focus on Pediatric Rheumatology. My academic focus lies in pediatric immunology and rheumatology, with special emphasis on Kawasaki disease, pediatric lupus, and IEIs. I strive to bridge bedside clinical challenges with laboratory science by integrating translational immunology, multi-omics tools, and immune functional assays, to facilitate early diagnosis and personalized treatment strategies for immune-mediated diseases in children. I have authored over 170 peer-reviewed publications, with more than 50 as first or corresponding author, accumulating 1,987 citations and an H-index of 21 (Google Scholar). I have presented extensively at major international forums including PReS, APLAR, EULAR, ACR, APSID, and the International Kawasaki Disease Symposium. I am an Associate Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). My work has been recognized through over 15 international awards, including the APLAR Research Award (2022), APSID Young Investigator Award (2024), and the Early Career Investigator Award by Pediatric Research. In addition to my research publications, I have peer-reviewed over 100 scientific manuscripts and authored invited editorials and reviews, particularly in Frontiers in Immunology, Pediatric Research, and Expert Reviews in Clinical Immunology. My editorial focus includes pediatric vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and inborn errors of immunity. My long-term research goal is to define underlying immune mechanisms in Kawasaki disease and IEIs using genomics, transcriptomics, and functional immunology, with an aim to develop diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and support the advancement of precision immunology in children. I currently lead to multiple national and international research projects, funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology–Science and Engineering Research Board (DST-SERB), Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR), and global collaborations.
