Maha Atout, PhD, MSN, BSN Dr. Maha Atout is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Nursing at Philadelphia University, Jordan. She received her PhD in Pediatric Palliative Care from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, in 2017. Her doctoral dissertation explored the role of communication in the care of children requiring palliative care, drawing from the perspectives of Jordanian mothers, physicians, and nurses. This pioneering work set the foundation for her long-term academic focus on pediatric palliative care, family-centered communication, and parental experiences in caring for children with life-limiting conditions. Dr. Atout’s academic influence stems from her commitment to advancing pediatric palliative care as a human-rights-based and culturally sensitive discipline. She is particularly motivated by the need to improve communication between families and healthcare professionals, and to highlight the experiences of parents making end-of-life decisions for children. What differentiates her from others in the field is her ability to integrate culturally grounded qualitative insights with global perspectives, thereby shaping international discussions on children’s rights, family-centered care, and pediatric nursing education. She has published extensively, authoring and co-authoring more than 70 scientific papers, including several as first or corresponding author. Her work has been widely cited, with over 28,000 citations, an h-index of 27, and an i10-index of 47 (Google Scholar, 2024). Dr. Atout has presented her research at more than 25 international academic conferences across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Her research achievements have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Child Health Award (Royal College of Nursing, 2023) and ranking in the Top 2% of researchers worldwide (Stanford University, 2024). In addition to her research, Dr. Atout has made significant contributions to academic publishing. She has served on editorial boards, acted as a guest editor for special issues, and written several editorials. As a peer reviewer, she has evaluated more than 150 manuscripts for leading international journals. Her long-term professional goal is to build evidence-based, culturally sensitive models of pediatric palliative care that address children’s rights, parental decision-making, and children’s awareness of illness and death—an area she is currently investigating in depth. She is also engaged in research on nursing education, digital health integration, and cultural perspectives in caregiving. These fields collectively reflect her vision of advancing both nursing practice and healthcare policy for vulnerable pediatric populations in Jordan and globally. Dr. Atout’s professional expertise spans qualitative and mixed-methods research, evidence-based practice, family-centered communication, pediatric oncology care, and nursing education. Beyond her technical expertise, she is recognized for her leadership, mentoring, and problem-solving skills, as well as her ability to foster teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration. She has successfully supervised numerous master’s theses and served as an external examiner for graduate research in pediatric nursing. Outside academia, Dr. Atout enjoys community service, contributing to health awareness campaigns, maternal and child health education, and humanitarian initiatives in Jordan.
