Professor Chang Feng | Director of Orthopedics and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Shanxi Provincial People’s Hospital Professor Chang Feng is currently the Director of Orthopedics and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Shanxi Provincial People’s Hospital, a Distinguished Professor (Level II), Ph.D. Supervisor, and recipient of the State Council Special Allowance. As a global leader in orthopedic innovation, he has dedicated over three decades to advancing minimally invasive spine surgery, limb deformity correction, and translational research. Clinical Leadership and Innovations Professor Chang pioneered the introduction of German intervertebral foraminal endoscopic technology in Shanxi Province in 2012, revolutionizing the treatment of lumbar disc herniation and spinal stenosis. His team achieved a landmark breakthrough in 2013 with the world’s first endoscopic treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis (including vertebral posterior edge dissociation), establishing a new global standard for minimally invasive care. This innovation was followed by the development of endoscopic techniques for lumbar spondylolisthesis (2014), cervical disc herniation (2015), and thoracic pathologies (2016). With over 10,000 endoscopic surgeries performed, his clinical expertise spans complex cases, including geriatric patients (up to 92 years old) and severe spinal deformities. His minimally invasive approach, characterized by 1-cm incisions and rapid recovery, has set a global benchmark for precision and patient outcomes. Academic Contributions A prolific researcher, Professor Chang led the Clinical Study on Selective Posterior Rhizotomy for Cerebral Palsy, recognized as domestically advanced in 1998. His landmark study on percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal lumbar stenosis treatment earned a Shanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class) and was designated a National Health Commission Key Promotion Project in 2023. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in journals like Chinese Journal of Orthopaedics and co-authored textbooks on orthopedic surgery. Global Influence and Professional Leadership Professor Chang serves as Vice Chairman of the Minimally Invasive Spine Committee of the Chinese Association of Chinese Medicine and Executive Committee Member of SICOT’s Spine Minimally Invasive Division. He has organized seven international spine surgery summits and trained specialists from over 30 cities, establishing his department as a global training hub with certifications from the German JOIMAX and World Minimally Invasive Surgery Society. His contributions to global academic exchanges include live surgical demonstrations at the 34th International Spine Congress and keynote addresses at COA Annual Meetings. Awards and Recognition Recipient of the prestigious 10th China Physician Award and twice honored with Shanxi’s Science and Technology Progress Awards, Professor Chang is also recognized as a Provincial Academic Leader and "San Jin Talent" (Top-tier Professional). His commitment to patient care and innovation was further highlighted by the "Excellence in Medical Ethics" award from CHTV in 2020. Vision and Legacy Under Professor Chang’s leadership, the orthopedics department at Shanxi Provincial People’s Hospital has become a National Key Discipline, focusing on integrating cutting-edge technologies like endoscopic fusion and fiber ring repair. His vision prioritizes translating research into accessible, high-quality care, particularly for underserved populations. With a patient-centered philosophy and relentless pursuit of excellence, Professor Chang continues to shape the future of orthopedic surgery globally.
