My name is Carlos Eduardo Paiva, I am a medical oncologist and palliative care specialist, holding a master's, doctorate, and postdoctoral degree. Currently, I serve as the coordinator of a postgraduate program at Barretos Cancer Hospital, a large teaching and research institution I have always been deeply interested in both the study and practice of reducing suffering in cancer patients, particularly those with breast and gynecological cancer. I am also committed to minimizing the burden of treatment on these patients. My work is centered around improving their quality of life through clinical care, research, and education. I divide my time between clinical practice, managing the postgraduate program as its coordinator, teaching master's and doctoral students, and leading research. For the past 15 years, I have headed the Palliative Care and Quality of Life Research Group, where we focus on developing strategies to enhance the well-being of cancer patients. What sets me apart is my ability to integrate clinical expertise, research, and education into a comprehensive approach to patient care, ensuring that the impact of my work extends beyond individual patients to the broader medical community. I have made significant academic contributions, with 157 indexed publications in ISI-WOS and 143 published articles in PubMed, of which 60 were published in the last five years. Of my total indexed work in PubMed, I have been the first author in 27% (38 out of 136) and the last author in 28% (39 out of 136). My work has earned an H-index of 34 on Google Scholar, 25 on Scopus, and 24 on Web of Science. I serve as Section Editor for Cancer Control and am a member of the ESMO Designated Centres Working Groups. In addition to my research and clinical activities, I have been actively involved in mentoring students. To date, I have supervised eight undergraduate research students, 16 master’s students, and 8 doctoral students. Currently, I am guiding two doctoral students and supervising a postdoctoral researcher. I am currently a member of the editorial boards of Annals of Palliative Care, Translational Breast Cancer Research, Latin America Palliative Care Journal, Oncologie, and serve as Section Editor for Cancer Control. I have also contributed editorials to several academic journals. In addition, I have peer-reviewed numerous manuscripts for a wide range of journals, frequently including Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Supportive Care in Cancer, Clinics, PLOS One, and many others. These activities reflect my ongoing commitment to advancing the field through rigorous academic review and contributing to the development of high-quality research in oncology and palliative care. I am passionate about research, and while time and limited resources have been challenges, I have developed strategies to enhance work efficiency and select excellent master's and doctoral students to support my efforts. Despite these challenges, I have secured significant funding and hope to obtain even more in the future. My research group focuses on cost-effective studies with a strong emphasis on addressing critical research questions and practical solutions. Long-term, my goal is to continue advancing in the fields of oncology and palliative care, contributing to improved patient outcomes and fostering innovative, impactful research. I am a dedicated and resilient professional with strong active listening and communication skills, enabling me to empathize and connect with others effectively. My leadership style is centered on motivation and support rather than strict authority, fostering collaborative and positive environments. I excel in problem-solving, often finding creative and innovative solutions even in challenging situations. Additionally, I take pride in my interpersonal, mentoring, and management skills, guiding teams to achieve shared goals while nurturing individual growth. Although I recognize the need to be more rigorous and firm in certain situations, I am actively working on achieving this balance to enhance my overall effectiveness. I am passionate about music, enjoying playing the guitar. I love traveling and exploring new places, especially with my family. Reading and practicing meditation are also hobbies that bring me joy and balance.
