My name is Alan Mouton and I hold a PhD in Physiology from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. I am currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. I am a cardiovascular physiologist with extensive expertise in mouse models of myocardial infarction (MI), rodent echocardiography, macrophage cell biology, mitochondrial function, and whole body, tissue, and cellular metabolism. My research focuses on metabolic-immune interactions during cardiac injury, particularly the role of macrophage metabolic reprogramming, as well as autoimmune mechanisms of cardiac injury. Since starting my postdoctoral fellowship in 2018, my research has focused on the role of acute inflammation mediated by innate immune cells and fibroblasts, with a specific emphasis on metabolic pathways regulating cellular phenotypes. Following an AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship that built upon this work, I was promoted to faculty (Instructor) and able to obtain intramural pilot funding from an NIH COBRE, which subsequently allowed me to become a junior COBRE investigator for 3 years. I received an AHA Career Development Award in 2021, and an NHLBI R01 in 2023 to study macrophage metabolism of alternative fuels (lactate and ketones) during cardiac injury. In addition to my own independent work, I have maintained collaborations with several members in the department with a central theme of the role of mitochondrial function and metabolism during different disease states, including diabetic nephropathy, heart failure due to pressure overload, myocardial infarction, and preserved ejection fraction, and parental obesity in adverse cardiometabolic development programming, which have led to a number of publications. I have published 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including 20 as first/corresponding author, including in prestigious journals such as Circulation Research. I have nearly 3000 citations and a Google Scholar H-index of 21. I am dedicated towards better understanding the immune response during cardiac injury and heart failure to improve the health and wellbeing of our society. Outside of research, I enjoy spending time with my family and exercising.
