Shuhei Komatsu, MD, PhD, FACS, is Associate Professor in the Department of Digestive Surgery at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and Deputy Director of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Division of Esophageal and Gastric Surgery, at Kyoto First Red Cross Hospital, Kyoto, Japan. He is a surgeon-scientist in upper gastrointestinal surgery whose career has been devoted to advancing the surgical treatment of esophageal and gastric malignancies through the dual pillars of operative innovation and translational oncology. His professional work is distinguished by a consistent commitment to establishing safer, less invasive, and oncologically rigorous treatment strategies, particularly in the fields of minimally invasive and robotic surgery, mediastinoscopic esophagectomy, complex upper gastrointestinal reconstruction, and multidisciplinary perioperative care. Over the course of his career, Dr. Komatsu has built a substantial academic portfolio through continuous contributions to both surgical practice and cancer research. His work has been published in internationally respected journals, including British Journal of Cancer, Molecular Cancer, Carcinogenesis, Gastroenterology, European Journal of Surgical Oncology, Scientific Reports, Cancer Science, and Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, reflecting the breadth of his scholarship across clinical surgery, surgical oncology, and translational cancer biology. He has delivered numerous presentations at major international scientific meetings and has received multiple academic distinctions, including Young Investigator Awards, Excellent Abstract Awards, and recognition as an Academic Surgeon Scholar of the American College of Surgeons. His ORCID record documents sustained scholarly productivity, including 13 validated works, 376 self-asserted works, and 31 peer reviews across 9 publications or grants, underscoring his continuing engagement in the international academic community. Beyond his individual scholarly achievements, Dr. Komatsu has assumed important responsibilities in professional leadership, surgical education, and quality assurance. He serves as an academic councillor and active member of major professional societies in gastrointestinal surgery, esophageal disease, gastric cancer, endoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, and oncology, and has contributed to the field as a technical judge in robotic and laparoscopic surgery. Through these roles, he has participated in the evaluation, dissemination, and refinement of advanced operative techniques, while also helping to shape standards for safety, technical excellence, and responsible surgical innovation. His career reflects not only a high level of technical accomplishment as an operating surgeon, but also a broader institutional and academic commitment to strengthening the future of gastrointestinal surgery through education, mentorship, and professional stewardship. His long-term academic vision is to further integrate advanced surgical technology with biologically informed cancer treatment, with particular emphasis on esophageal and gastric cancer, microRNA biology, liquid biopsy, and biomarker-guided therapeutic strategies. He is widely valued for leadership in multidisciplinary teams, mentorship of younger surgeons and physician-scientists, clear and thoughtful communication, attentive listening, sound management of complex clinical and academic programs, and calm, solution-oriented judgment in challenging surgical settings. Outside his formal professional activities, he values academic dialogue, international collaboration, and the cultivation of the next generation of surgeons, researchers, and academic leaders.
