Takashi Nonaka, MD, PhD, is Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery, and Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at Nagasaki University Hospital, Nagasaki, Japan. He specializes in colorectal cancer surgery, with particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery, robotic-assisted colorectal surgery, transanal approaches, and pelvic exenteration for locally advanced rectal cancer. His research focuses on improving the safety, precision, and oncological outcomes of complex colorectal cancer surgery through the development and clinical validation of innovative surgical techniques. His work integrates advanced minimally invasive technologies, including robotic surgery and transanal approaches, with evidence-based clinical research to establish practical surgical strategies that can be adopted worldwide. His unique contribution lies in translating technical innovation into standardized procedures supported by clinical evidence while promoting international education and multidisciplinary collaboration. Dr. Nonaka has led numerous clinical studies evaluating robotic colorectal surgery, transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), transanal pelvic exenteration, intracorporeal anastomosis, and advanced surgical workflows. His research has been published in international peer-reviewed journals, and he has been invited to contribute review articles and deliver lectures at international conferences. His current research interests also include artificial intelligence in surgery, image-guided and multimodal surgical navigation, intraoperative data science, gut microbiome research, and precision surgery for colorectal cancer. As Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, Dr. Nonaka has played a leading role in implementing advanced robotic surgical platforms and establishing structured training programs for young surgeons. He has actively promoted the safe dissemination of robotic colorectal surgery through national and international educational activities, including live surgery, cadaver-based training, and proctorship programs. Dr. Nonaka serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for several international medical journals and is actively involved in advancing high-quality peer review and academic publishing. He has also organized multicenter collaborative studies and international research networks aimed at improving the treatment of colorectal cancer. His long-term academic goal is to establish next-generation precision colorectal surgery by integrating surgical innovation, artificial intelligence, digital surgery, and translational research, ultimately improving both oncological outcomes and patients' quality of life.
