I am Pavel Skok, full professor and senior adviser of internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor since 2012. I am the vice-dean for postgraduate studies in "Biomedical Technology" at the Faculty of Medicine since 2005. As a lecturer or co-lector, I participate in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the fields of general medicine, dental medicine, and from autumn 2025 also in the field of pharmacy. In the past, 2009 – 2020, I was the head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and the Department of Scientific Research at the University Medical Center Maribor. I am a member of the Commission for the recognition of professional qualifications of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia, member of the habilitation committee of the Faculty of Medicine (since 2006), member of the committee for scientific research affairs of the Faculty of Medicine (since 2006) and member of the committee for postgraduate studies of the University of Maribor (since 2008). Pharmacogenomic biomarkers for response to classical drugs (small synthetic molecules) are relatively well studied. They mainly include variants in genes for drug metabolism and transport (xenobiotics) and are already being introduced into clinical practice. Variability in response to newer biological drugs is less well studied, but at the same time, especially in the field of chronic immune diseases, new biological drugs are increasingly being used for different molecular targets, which enable selection and personalized treatment. Within the research program, we want to investigate molecular processes and mechanisms of disease progression and response to treatment with new approaches of systems biology and (bio)medicine, where we strive for the most comprehensive treatment of biological processes. Understanding the role of biomarkers (genes, transcripts, peptides, proteins) in the molecular mechanisms of (non)response to biological drugs will also enable a more detailed understanding of gene function and the discovery of previously unknown gene functions. My research work in the last decade was focused on the introduction of some modern diagnostic procedures at my home institution: pharmacogenomics of complex gastrointestinal diseases, the role of cytokines in the assessment of acute pancreatitis and modern information technologies in the field of medicine, resuscitation applications on mobile devices. I have 756 records in the Slovenian bibliographic database, of which 57 are original scientific articles, in 32 of which I am the first or leading author. I have also published 21 scientific review articles, in 15 of which I am the first or leading author. I have published 44 articles in SCI journals (Web of Science), my first-author articles have been cited over 400 times in SCI journals, my Google Scholar's H-index is 10. In the last 24 years, I have participated in 6 research programs and 6 research projects. I have been a mentor or co-mentor to 7 doctoral candidates, comentor to 4 master's theses and 7 diploma theses. As a member of the doctoral evaluation and defense committee, I have participated in 24 candidates at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Maribor, predominantly in the field of gastroenterology and internal medicine. I am a reviewer for more than 45 journals, including the most reputable international ones in the field of gastroenterology, Gastroenterology, Endoscopy. I have given more than 60 invited lectures at international congresses in the field of gastroenterology and endoscopy, including at the World Congress of Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology. For 30 years, I have participated as a member of the organizational and expert committee, reviewer and editor of the proceedings of the traditional Slovenian professional meeting "From Practice to Practice", which connected internal and general medicine. I am a patient listener, driven by a desire for teamwork and effective problem solving. In the past, my hobby was traveling and learning about foreign cultures, especially Central and South America, my interest was in the Mayan and Aztec cultures.. When I was young, I wanted to study archaeology. Unfortunately, after the death of my wife, two years ago, a family medicine doctor I met while studying medicine, I gave up traveling.
