In 1996 I joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Sevilla as a
postgraduate student for my PhD Thesis. After my postdoctoral stay at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA; 2001-2005) I have worked the last 12 years in the field of viral hepatitis and hepatology as Head of the Virology Lab of the Digestive Diseases Department at Valme University Hospital & CIBERehd. The main lines of research, with a strong translational nature, have been funded by the Carlos III Health Institute and the Regional Ministry of Health of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The different projects of which I am responsible cover from the study of replication of the hepatitis C virus, in order to identify new therapeutic targets. We also have analyzed the effect of different compounds (natural and synthetic) that attenuate hepatic fibrosis progression, both in the context of viral hepatitis and in nonalcoholic fat liver disease (NAFLD). We have developed and implemented a deep-sequencing-based tool for genome analysis of hepatitis C virus (sub-genotyping and drug resistance analysis). As a member of a multidisciplinary team, I also coordinate clinical trials related to Hepatology. I am the author responsible for numerous top-level scientific publications and principal investigator of several projects funded by public and private organizations.
