Matthew McMillin, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, where he holds appointments in the Department of Medicine and the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation, and Technology. In these roles, his is responsibilities include conducting hepatology research, developing innovative educational strategies, and contributing to the design, implementation, and delivery of curricula for undergraduate medical students. Dr. McMillin’s research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying acute liver failure and cholestatic liver diseases, as well as the complex communication pathways that exist between the liver and the brain. A major emphasis of his work is understanding how liver disease contributes to neuroinflammation and the development of hepatic encephalopathy, a serious neurological complication of liver dysfunction. More recently, his laboratory has investigated the role of the thrombospondin-CD47 signaling axis and how its dysregulation contributes to tissue injury, inflammation, and disease progression during acute liver injury and hepatic encephalopathy. Through this work, he seeks to identify novel therapeutic targets that may improve patient outcomes. Dr. McMillin has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed publications, including over 20 articles as first or corresponding author. His work has been cited more than 2,400 times and has contributed to a growing understanding of the mechanisms that drive liver disease and its systemic complications. In addition to his research and educational activities, Dr. McMillin is actively involved in scientific publishing and professional service. He has reviewed manuscripts for more than 15 scientific journals and currently serves as an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member for five journals. He has also served as a Guest Editor for special journal issues and contributed accompanying editorial articles. Dr. McMillin participates in several scientific societies and serves on committees for the American Society for Investigational Pathology and the International Society for Hepatic Encephalopathy and Nitrogen Metabolism. Outside of academia, he enjoys restoring classic automobiles, traveling with his family, and reading.
