Alain Chichom-Mefire Current position title and affiliation: MD, Professor of General Surgery, Head of Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Buea, Cameroon. Training: Born in 23rd March 1970 in Cameroon, he graduated as M.D. in 1995 after seven years of Medical studies in the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of University of Yaoundé in Cameroon. After serving as a general practitioner for 4 years, he was admitted in the residency program in the same faculty in 1999 and graduated as a General surgeon in 2005. Professional carrier: Prof Chichom-Mefire served as the main Surgeon in Limbe, a semi-rural town of South-West Cameroon where he occupied the position of Chief of Service of Surgery for 11 years (2005 to 2015). In 2006, he was called to serve as a part time lecturer in Anatomy and General Surgery in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Buea and became a full-time lecturer in the same faculty in 2009. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2010 and became Professor in 2014 after returning from Paris France where he successfully presented the competitive examination to become a University Professor (Professeur des Universités - Praticien Hospitalier: PU-PH). He was appointed as Head of Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Buea in 2011, a position he still holds til date. Prof Chichom-Mefire serves as a Co-Director of the Program for the Advancement of Surgical Equity (PASE) based in the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Prof Chichom-Mefire also served as Medical Director (2015 to 2017) and Director of Training, Research and Innovation (2018 to 2020) at the Gynaeco-Obstetric and Paediatric Hospital, a level 1 institution located in Douala in Cameroon. Research and publications: As a researcher, Prof Chichom-Mefire has published over 85 original research papers in world renowned peer review journals. He is a reviewer for numerous medical journals such as the World Journal of surgery, the World Journal of Emergency Surgery, Injury, Traffic Injury Prevention, Plos one, World Journal of Gastroenterology, South-African Medical Journal, Nigerian Journal of Surgery, etc. His research activities are currently oriented towards improving the outcome of management of the injured, antimicrobial resistance stewardship and global surgical equity. Society membership: Prof Chichom-Mefire is a member of numerous scientific societies among which the “World society of Emergency surgery” (WSES), the “International Society of Surgery” (ISS-SIC), the “International Association of Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care” (IATSIC), the “Alliance for Surgery and Anaesthesia Presence” (ASAP), the “Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery”.
