I am Mohamed El-Kassas, MD, PhD, Professor of Hepatology and Gastroenterology and Chief of the Endemic Medicine and Hepato-Gastroenterology Department at the Faculty of Medicine, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt. As a hepatologist and gastroenterologist, my career has focused on advancing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of viral hepatitis, steatotic liver diseases, and hepatocellular carcinoma, with a particular commitment to addressing the unique challenges in the Middle East and Africa. I have consistently sought to build bridges between clinical practice, research, and policy, aiming to reduce the global burden of liver disease while expanding representation from underserved regions in international research efforts. Throughout my academic career, I have authored and co-authored more than 220 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including original research, reviews, consensus guidelines, and editorials. I have participated in numerous global collaborative studies and served as a principal investigator and co-investigator in multiple clinical trials. My publications have been cited extensively, and my Google Scholar H-index reflects the impact of my work in shaping the regional and global hepatology landscape. I have delivered invited lectures and keynote talks at numerous international conferences, including meetings of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), and the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), in addition to regional conferences across the MENA and African regions. I am the recipient of several prestigious awards, including Egypt’s State Encouraging Award in Medical Sciences (2016), the State Medal of Excellence (First Class, 2017), and the Best Arab Researcher Prize in Natural Sciences (2019). In addition to research and teaching, I have contributed extensively to scholarly publishing. I serve on the editorial boards of international journals such as PLOS One, Frontiers in Medicine, and the Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology, and I am frequently invited as a peer reviewer for over 70 international journals. I have authored multiple invited editorials and commentaries addressing key topics in hepatology, steatotic liver diseases, and liver cancer. These editorial contributions have allowed me to help shape scholarly discourse and highlight pressing gaps in clinical research and public health priorities. Beyond publications, I have played leadership roles in major academic and professional organizations. I currently serve as President of the Steatotic Liver Diseases Study Foundation in Middle East and North Africa (SLMENA), as a Global Council Board Member of the International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL), as a member of the Executive Council of the Africa Hepatopancreatobiliary Cancer Consortium (AHPBCC), and as a member of both the Hepatology Committee of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) and the Global NASH Council. I am also Past President of the Egyptian Association for Research and Training in Hepato-Gastroenterology (EARTH). Through these roles, I have worked to expand collaborative research networks, strengthen capacity building, and promote evidence-based policy in hepatology across regions with limited resources. My long-term professional goals are centered on the epidemiology, prevention, and management of steatotic liver disease, viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as the development of multicenter registries and trials that can inform tailored regional guidelines. I am particularly committed to advancing clinical trial inclusion from the MENA region and Africa, ensuring that global therapeutic advances are relevant and applicable to diverse populations. I possess strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills, having supervised numerous postgraduate students, fellows, and junior faculty members. I have also organized national and international conferences, workshops, and training programs designed to empower young researchers and clinicians. These experiences reflect my belief that research must be accompanied by education and mentorship to sustain long-term impact. Outside of medicine, I enjoy traveling, reading, and sports, especially football, which provide balance and inspiration to my professional life.
