Dr. Zhigang Liu is a professor in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction at Imperial College London. His research focuses on the role of the gut microbiota and microbial metabolites in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with particular emphasis on host–microbiome metabolic interactions, immune regulation, and multi-omics integration. By combining metabolomics, transcriptomics, microbiome profiling, and experimental models, his work aims to elucidate how microbial-derived metabolites influence intestinal inflammation and immune responses, thereby identifying novel molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for IBD and related inflammatory disorders. Dr. Liu has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, including Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and other high-impact journals in gastroenterology, microbiome research, and systems biology. His research has contributed to advancing the understanding of host–microbiome interactions and the role of metabolic signaling pathways in chronic intestinal inflammation. In addition to academic publications, he holds patents related to microbiome and metabolomics research. His work has been supported by multiple national and international funding agencies, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, international collaborative programs, and industry-supported research initiatives. Currently, Dr. Liu leads several research projects focusing on the mechanisms by which gut microbial metabolites regulate intestinal immunity and disease progression. These projects involve integrated multi-omics approaches, experimental animal models, and translational studies aiming to develop novel diagnostic biomarkers and precision therapeutic strategies for inflammatory bowel disease and other complex immune-mediated disorders. His research group also explores the broader role of microbiome-derived metabolites in host metabolic regulation and systemic diseases. Beyond his research activities, Dr. Liu is actively engaged in teaching and academic training. He has contributed to graduate-level education in areas including artificial intelligence in medical research, biostatistics, and metabolomics. He has also organized several international scientific workshops and conferences, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in metabolomics, systems biology, and microbiome research. Dr. Liu has delivered oral presentations at numerous international conferences, including meetings organized by the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), and international symposia on metabolomics and systems biology. Dr. Liu is also highly active in academic service and international scientific collaboration. He currently sits on the editorial boards of several international journals and serves as an expert reviewer for research funding agencies such as UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Dr. Liu is a member of several major professional societies, including the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), and remains actively involved in the global research community focused on gastrointestinal diseases, microbiome science, and translational medicine.
