Professor Dr. Wael A H Hegazy is a distinguished academic and researcher in the fields of Microbiology and Immunology. I hold the position of Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Zagazig University, Egypt. I am currently appointed as the Head of the Microbiology and Immunology Department at the Oman College of Health Sciences, Pharmacy Program. My academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and a Master of Science (MSc) from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Zagazig University. I furthered My studies internationally, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Osnabrück in Germany. His doctoral research focused on optimizing Salmonella as a carrier for cancer vaccines. I also pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Florida's Faculty of Pharmacy. With over 70 articles published in esteemed scientific journals, I have established a significant research portfolio. My work primarily focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, and host-pathogen interactions. A major theme of my research is the development of innovative anti-virulence strategies, particularly the repurposing of existing drugs to disrupt quorum sensing and bacterial virulence mechanisms in pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella Typhimurium. Research Focus - Drug Repurposing as Anti-Virulence Agents: Investigates FDA-approved drugs for their ability to block bacterial communication (quorum sensing) and virulence without inhibiting growth, reducing selective pressure for resistance. - Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance: Explores novel compounds and strategies to enhance biodefense against drug-resistant infections, including biofilm disruption. - Host-Pathogen & Microbe-Metabolite Interactions: Researches the complex metabolic dynamics during host-microbe interactions, including how metabolites influence infection and defense. -Clinical Microbiology & Epidemiology: Contributes to clinical studies, such as epidemiological analyses of infectious diseases and the efficacy of anti-biofilm agents. Editorial Contributions Professor Hegazy is an active contributor to the scientific community through his editorial work.
