Carlos Miguel Marto is presently a teaching fellow and researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). He is involved in delivering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses across various academic programs. These include Dentistry, Medicine, Biomedical Pharmacy, as well as specialized areas such as Esthetic and Operative Dentistry, and Experimental Pathology, among others. His teaching responsibilities span both theoretical knowledge and practical training, contributing to the development of future healthcare professionals. Carlos Miguel completed his academic training with a master’s degree in Dentistry from FMUC. He furthered his expertise by pursuing postgraduate studies in Biomedical Research and an Advanced Specialization Course in Health Sciences, both also undertaken at FMUC. In addition to his education in Portugal, he has received extensive advanced training in scientific methodology, biomaterials, and tissue regeneration at several internationally recognized institutions. These include the University of Michigan, Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Bern, and the University of Gothenburg, among others, which enriched his global perspective and scientific knowledge. His main research interests lie in experimental pathology and the use of in vitro and animal models. He has a strong focus on regenerative strategies, especially those involving biomaterials and stem-like cells. His work also includes the evaluation of cytotoxicity and biocompatibility, cancer research, evidence-based practices in both dentistry and medicine, and the advancement of research methodology. He conducts his research at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), and the Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes (CEMMPRE). Carlos Miguel Marto has authored more than 90 full-text papers in peer-reviewed and indexed journals, accumulating over 2,260 citations and achieving an h-index of 23 on Google Scholar (as of July 2025). He has been awarded five scientific scholarships and 18 scientific prizes. Moreover, he holds editorial roles in several academic journals and regularly serves as a peer reviewer for more than 80 indexed journals spanning dentistry, medicine, and materials science. Outside of his academic life, Carlos enjoys reading literature, traveling to new destinations, discovering music, and trying out diverse culinary experiences.
