Sara Massironi was born in Monza, Milan, Italy. She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, Italy, where she also earned her PhD in 2007. From the beginning of her career, she combined clinical activity with research, developing a strong interest in gastroenterology and particularly in rare and complex conditions such as gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, autoimmune gastritis, and chronic intestinal diseases. Over the past fifteen years, Prof. Massironi has dedicated her clinical and scientific work to advancing the understanding and management of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, inflammatory bowel diseases, autoimmune gastritis, and malnutrition associated with gastrointestinal disorders. She has progressively developed expertise in abdominal imaging, both conventional and endoscopic ultrasound, which she has applied in diagnosis, staging, and therapeutic interventions. Her work has contributed to refining the role of ultrasound in gastroenterology, with particular emphasis on intestinal ultrasound and endoscopic ultrasound as minimally invasive tools for patient care. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at the Department of Medicine and Surgery, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan. Her academic role reflects her long-standing commitment to combining clinical practice, research, and education. Over the years, she has been responsible for teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, transmitting knowledge in the areas of gastroenterology, endoscopic techniques, and clinical nutrition. Professor Massironi has more than a decade of experience in clinical ultrasound and endoscopic ultrasound techniques. She is skilled in intestinal ultrasound, interventional ultrasound, and diagnostic applications including contrast-enhanced ultrasound and fine-needle biopsies. She is also trained in therapeutic procedures such as alcoholization. Her competence in this field was formally recognized with the National Diploma of the Italian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (SIUMB). In addition, she earned a Diploma of the 2nd Level University Master in Endoscopic Ultrasound at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan. Her expertise is not limited to imaging. She also developed advanced competence in clinical nutrition, having received specialized training at the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, where she obtained the SINPE (Società Italiana di Nutrizione Parenterale ed Enterale) Certificate. She has applied this knowledge in the management of patients with short bowel syndrome, malabsorption, and complex nutritional needs, integrating gastroenterology and nutrition into daily practice. Throughout her career, Prof. Massironi has been invited to serve as speaker and chairperson at national and international conferences, symposia, and educational courses. She is widely recognized for her ability to bridge clinical experience with research innovation. Her academic contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed publications and scientific reports, many of which address neuroendocrine tumors, autoimmune gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and diagnostic imaging. Her research has been published in high-impact journals and has significantly contributed to the field, especially regarding the management of neuroendocrine neoplasms and the role of endoscopic ultrasound in clinical decision-making. In addition to publishing her own research, Prof. Massironi plays an active role in the scientific community as a peer reviewer and editorial board member for several gastroenterology journals. She has reviewed a large number of manuscripts in the fields of gastroenterology, endoscopy, and clinical nutrition, with an emphasis on neuroendocrine tumors and ultrasound techniques. She is an active member of numerous national and international scientific societies, including SIGE (Società Italiana di Gastroenterologia), UEG (United European Gastroenterology), ECCO (European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation), AISP (Associazione Italiana Studio Pancreas), ENETS (European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society), and ITANET (Italian Association for Neuroendocrine Tumors). Through these networks she has participated in collaborative research and national projects, contributing to consensus statements, multicenter studies, and expert recommendations. Her role in the clinical management of neuroendocrine tumors has been particularly significant. She served as coordinator of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Board at San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, Italy, and previously held the same role at Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Policlinico, Milan. These positions demonstrate her leadership in multidisciplinary care, ensuring patients benefit from integrated expertise in gastroenterology, oncology, surgery, radiology, and pathology. Beyond her scientific and clinical achievements, Prof. Massironi is dedicated to mentoring young physicians and researchers, encouraging them to pursue academic careers and engage with innovative approaches to complex gastrointestinal diseases. She continues to integrate clinical experience with research perspectives, contributing to guideline development, evidence-based care, and improved patient outcomes. In summary, Sara Massironi is an accomplished gastroenterologist, researcher, and educator whose career has combined clinical excellence with academic productivity. Her contributions to neuroendocrine tumors, autoimmune gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, ultrasound diagnostics, and clinical nutrition have had a lasting impact on the field. Through her teaching, research, and society involvement, she remains committed to advancing gastroenterology and shaping future generations of specialists
