Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] is rising worldwide and no cure is available. Many patients require surgery and they often present with nutritional deficiencies. Although randomised controlled trials of dietary therapy are lacking, expert IBD centres have long-established interdisciplinary care, including tailored nutritional therapy, to optimise clinical outcomes and resource utilisation. This topical review aims to share expertise and offers current practice recommendations to optimise outcomes of IBD patients who undergo surgery. METHODS A consensus expert panel consisting of dietitians, surgeons, and gastroenterologists, convened by the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation, performed a systematic literature review. Nutritional evaluation and dietary needs, perioperative optimis ation, surgical complications, long-term needs, and special situations were critically appraised. Statements were developed using a Delphi methodology incorporating three successive rounds. Current practice positions were set when ≥80% of participants agreed on a recommendation. RESULTS A total of 26 current practice positions were formulated which address the needs of IBD patients perioperatively and in the long term following surgery. Routine screening, perioperative optimisation by oral, enteral, or parenteral nutrition, dietary fibre, and supplements were reviewed. IBD-specific situations, including management of patients with a restorative proctocolectomy, an ostomy, strictures, or short-bowel syndrome, were addressed. CONCLUSIONS Perioperative dietary therapy improves the outcomes of IBD patients who undergo a surgical procedure. This topical review shares interdisciplinary expertise and provides guidance to optimise the outcomes of patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. taking advantage of contemporary nutrition science.

Abstract
Lethargy is a frequent and important clinical feature of anaemia; however, it does not absolutely correlate with the severity of anaemia. Manganese is efficiently absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract via divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), which is also responsible for iron transport. DMT1 is upregulated in iron deficiency (ID). Increased manganese concentrations are reported in ID anaemia (IDA) in various species. Manganese is neurotoxic and therefore may contribute to lethargy observed in some anaemic patients. In addition, anaemia and ID are common in human inflammatory bowel disease. Little is known about how anaemia influences manganese metabolism in veterinary patients and how common is anaemia in dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE). If elevated manganese concentrations are found, then potentially neurotoxicity may be contributing to morbidity in these cases. The objectives of this study were to investigate the hypothesis that whole blood manganese concentrations would be increased in dogs with anaemia, particularly in dogs with confirmed IDA, and that anaemia would be common in canine CE. Medical records from 2012-2016 were reviewed for dogs with CE that were anaemic, as well as dogs with confirmed IDA, where a sample suitable for manganese analysis was held in an archive. Manganese concentration was measured in whole blood from: 11 anaemic dogs with CE, 6 dogs with IDA, 9 non-anaemic ill controls, and 12 healthy controls. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests with post-test Dunn's multiple comparisons tests were performed, with P<0.05 considered significant. The prevalence of anaemia in canine CE was 20.6% (33/160). Manganese concentrations were significantly different between all groups (P=0.0001) and higher in non-anaemic than anaemic dogs (P=0.0078). Manganese concentrations were also higher in healthy compared to ill controls (P<0.0001), anaemic dogs with CE (P=0.0056) and to dogs with IDA (P=0.0001). No differences were observed between anaemic dogs with CE, IDA and ill controls. Although anaemia was frequently observed in canine CE, the hypothesis that dogs with anaemia would have increased manganese concentrations, possibly contributing to a lethargic state was not supported. Further research is warranted to understand the influence of anaemia on whole blood manganese.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although ulcerative colitis (UC) shows obvious similarities with other autoimmune diseases, cardiac consequences have not adequately introduced. The aim of our study was to evaluate left ventricular (LV) function in UC patients by using novel echocardiographic parameters. RESULTS Forty-five UC patients (mean age 37, 18 female) and 90 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (mean age 40, 38 female) included in the study. The mean disease activity score according to partial Mayo score was 2.16 ± 2.13. Mean global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global longitudinal strain rate (GLSR) measurements were significantly lower (-21.16 ± 2.71 vs. -23.36 ± 3.34; p < 0.001 and -1.33 ± 0.24 vs. -1.43 ± 0.24; p = 0.037, respectively), whereas global circumferential (-22.67 ± 3.66 vs. -23.37 ± 3.99; p = 0.140) and global radial strain (43.07 ± 8.58 vs. 44.12 ± 9.32; p = 0.545) measurements of the LV were similar in patients with UC compared with controls. The correlation coefficient (r) between GLS and partial Mayo score was -0.578 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that systolic cardiac deformation values are impaired in UC patients. Reduced GLS and GLSR might be an early indicator of cardiac involvement in this population.

Abstract
This review is a current summary of the role that both zinc deficiency and zinc supplementation can play in the etiology and therapy of a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases. The recent literature describing zinc action on gastrointestinal epithelial tight junctions and epithelial barrier function is described. Zinc enhancement of gastrointestinal epithelial barrier function may figure prominently in its potential therapeutic action in several gastrointestinal diseases.

Abstract
Trace elements play an important role in maintaining the normal metabolic and immune function. The onset of recurrent respiratory tract infection (RRI) is associated with the immune function, genetic factors and nutritional status. However, the association between the levels of trace elements and RRI remains inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the alterations of hair levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) in Chinese children with RRI by performing a meta-analysis. A predefined electronic databases search was performed to identify eligible studies for the analysis of hair Zn, Cu or Fe levels in Chinese children with RRI. Thirteen studies were included. RRI patients displayed significantly lower levels of hair Zn (13 studies, random effects SMD: - 1.215, 95% CI: - 1.704 to - 0.725, p < 0.0001), Cu (11 studies, random effects SMD: - 0.384, 95% CI: - 0.717 to - 0.052, p = 0.023) and Fe (12 studies, random effects SMD: - 0.569, 95% CI: - 0.827 to - 0.312, p < 0.0001) compared with controls. No evidence of publication bias was observed. Sensitivity analysis did not change the results significantly. In conclusion, the deficiency of Zn, Cu and Fe may be contributing factors for the susceptibility of RRI in Chinese children. However, more studies in different ethnicities should be performed in the future.
