Abstract
Background The application of bioprinted hydrogels in the field of bone regeneration is garnering increasing attention. The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current research status, hotspots and research directions in this field through bibliometric methods, and to predict the development trend of this field. Methods A search was conducted on 27 December 2024, for papers published on the Web of Science from 2010 to 2025. We used the bibliometrix package in the software program R to analyze the retrieved data and VOSviewer and CiteSpace to visualize hotspots and research trends in bioprinted hydrogels for bone regeneration. Results We identified and reviewed 684 articles published in this field between 2010 and 2025. A total of 811 institutions and 1,166 researchers from 41 countries/regions contributed to these publications. Among them, China led in terms of the number of articles published, single-country publications (SCP), and multi-country publications (MCP). Our bibliometric-based visualization analysis revealed that the mechanical properties and osteogenic differentiation capacity of biomaterials have been a focal research topic over the past decade, while emerging research has also concentrated on the in vitro fabrication of stem cells for bone regeneration and osteogenic differentiation, particularly the precise application of in situ stem cell-loaded bioprinted organoids. Conclusion This study provides an in-depth analysis of the research trajectory in the application of bioprinted hydrogels for bone regeneration. The number of research papers in this field is increasing annually, and the main research hotspots include bone regeneration, 3D printing, scaffolds, and hydrogels. Future research directions may focus on gelatin, additive manufacturing, and growth factors. Additionally, international collaboration is essential to enhance the effectiveness of bioprinted hydrogels in bone regeneration applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatic abscesses represent infections of the liver parenchyma from bacteria, fungi, and parasitic organisms. Trends in both abscess microbiology and management of abscesses (infective collections) have changed over the past decade. There is a paucity of published data regarding the clinicopathological features of liver abscesses in sub-Saharan Africa and other low-income and middle-income countries. AIM To evaluate the clinical presentations of liver abscesses and hydatid liver disease at two South African tertiary-level hospitals. METHODS Information accessed from electronic discharge summaries of patients from two South African referral hospitals in Johannesburg, South Africa from January 2016 to December 2020 were reviewed and analyzed. All patients older than 13 years presenting with infective liver collections (pyogenic, amoebic) and hydatid disease were included. Clinical findings and laboratory, microbiology, and radiology results and outcomes were collated and analyzed. RESULTS In total, 222 patients were included. There were 123 males (55.41%) and 99 females (44.59%), with a median age of 48 years. Comorbidities included HIV (24.23%), hypertension (20.57%), and diabetes mellitus (16.83%). The majority (74.77%) of abscesses were pyogenic, while amoebic and hydatid abscesses represented 16.22% and 9.01%, respectively. The predominant etiology of the pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) was biliary-related disease. WBC and C-reactive protein were significantly higher in the pyogenic group (P < 0.0002 and P < 0.007, respectively) when compared to the amoebic and hydatid groups. In patients with PLAs, organisms were cultured on blood in 17.58% and abscess fluid in 56.60%. Klebsiella, Escherichia coli and Streptococci were the most cultured organisms. Sixteen percent of the cultures were polymicrobial. In the overall group, 76.00% (n = 169) of patients requiring drainage had a percutaneous transhepatic catheter drain placed, while 8.76% (n = 19) had open surgery. The median length of hospital stay was 13 days. The mortality rate was 3.02%. CONCLUSION In this study, the most common type of liver abscess was PLAs of biliary origin in middle-aged males. The microbiology was similar to those described in Asian populations, and non-surgical management via percutaneous drainage was sufficient in the majority of cases with acceptable morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the research status, hot spots, and development trend of virtual vascular intervention simulation training in order to organize the knowledge and support its practice. METHODS Publications on virtual vascular intervention and respective teaching evaluation (2001-2021) were retrieved from Web of Science. Citespace 5.2.R2 and Carrot2 software was used to perform the bibliometric and visual analysis on virtual vascular intervention research networks. RESULTS Of the 1543 articles retrieved, 1520 were relevant to virtual vascular intervention research. Studies on vascular intervention emerged from 2002 with an upward trend being observed from 2010. The trend peaked between 2019 and 2020 with ∼140 published articles (9.21%) during the period. Spain published most studies (n = 146) followed by USA (n = 99) and England (n = 49). COMPUT EDUC (n = 177; 14.47%) journal publishing the highest number of articles. Among 705 authors, GARRISON D R, MAYER RE, DEDE C, COOK DA had highest publications. The frequent keywords used were "Virtual reality" (n = 105) and "education" (n = 105). Low cooperation between countries, authors' networks, and relatively stable academic team was noted making clinical application of virtual vascular intervention weak. CONCLUSION Considerable growth was observed in vascular intervention therapy using VR technology in the last 20 years. With consistent efforts like strengthening cross-institutional and multidisciplinary collaboration networks, VR based simulation training capability can be increased that in turn can improve the outcomes of complex vascular interventions.

Abstract
Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) are life-threatening disorders and require immediate treatment, but structured evidence is sparse and treatment guidelines are not established. In a retrospective observational study of 221 adult PLA patients (mean age 63 years, 63% men) treated between 2013 and 2019 at the Leipzig University Medical Center, we characterized pathogen spectrum, clinical management and outcomes. Biliary malignancies (33%), cholelithiasis (23%) and ischemic biliary tract disease (16%) were most common causes of PLA. Comorbidities included malignancies (40%) and diabetes mellitus (35%). Abdominal ultrasound was the preferred initial imaging modality (58%). Enterobacterales (58%), enterococci (42%) and streptococci (18%) were identified as most frequent pathogens. 97% of patients were treated with antibiotics and 75% of patients underwent an invasive treatment procedure. The 30-day mortality was almost identical in patients with and without underlying malignancy (14.6% vs. 14.4%, p = 0.96), while the one-year outcome differed significantly (58.4% vs. 29.6%, p < 0.001). Positive blood cultures (OR 4.78, 95% CI 1.39 to 22.5, p = 0.023) and detection of Enterobacterales (OR 3.55, 95% CI 1.40 to 9.97, p = 0.010) were associated with increased 30-day-mortality. We conclude that ultrasound, extensive microbiologic diagnosis, adequate anti-infective therapy and early intervention are crucial for the management of PLA.

Abstract
Background Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage Taenia solium. As a neglected tropical disease that is also difficult to diagnose, cysticercosis constitutes an important public health and research challenge. To characterize the development of research on cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis, considering the level of scientific evidence provided and the contribution of different countries to research, according to their endemic nature and their income level. Methods Indexed publications on cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis were retrieved from the MEDLINE database, and the evolution of scientific production and the topic areas addressed in the body of research were analyzed. Results A total of 7,860 papers published between 1928 and 2021 were analyzed. The volume of annual publications increased over time, standing at over 200 documents/year since 2010. Case studies constitute the main study design (27.4% of the documents with available information, n = 2,155), with fewer studies that provide the highest levels of scientific evidence, such as clinical studies (1.9%, n = 149) or systematic reviews (0.8%, n = 63). The most productive journals belong to the Parasitology and Tropical Medicine categories. Although the USA is the most productive country (n = 2,292), countries where Tenia solium is endemic, such as India (n = 1,749), Brazil (n = 941) and Peru (n = 898) also stand out, as does Mexico (n = 1,414). However, other endemic countries in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa show little participation in the research. The level of international collaboration by country is very uneven, with some countries presenting very low values, such as India (9.9% of documents in international collaboration) or Brazil (18.7%); while there is evidence of intense international collaboration in countries like Peru (91.3%), Tanzania (88.2%) or Kenya (93.1%). Research output has coalesced in three thematic clusters: basic research in animals; parasitism, animal health, and zoonoses; and the diagnosis and therapeutic approach in diseases associated with cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis. Conclusions The generation of knowledge on cysticercosis presents different features from other areas of research, such as the outstanding contribution of only some endemic countries; and the relevance of comprehensive approaches to research (animal and human health). Studies that provide higher levels of scientific evidence should be promoted, as should research in endemic areas.

Abstract
Background: Nanocomposite Hydrogels (NHs) are 3D molecular networks formed by physically or covalently crosslinking polymer with nanoparticles or nanostructures, which are particularly suitable for serving as carriers for drug delivery systems. Many articles pertaining to the applications of Nanocomposite Hydrogels for drug delivery have been published, however, the use of bibliometric and visualized analysis in this area remains unstudied. The purpose of this bibliometric study intended to comprehensively analyze the knowledge domain, research hotspots and frontiers associated with the applications of Nanocomposite Hydrogels for drug delivery. Methods: We identified and retrieved the publications concerning the applications of NHs for drug delivery between 2003 and 2022 from Web of Science Core Collection Bibliometric and visualized analysis was utilized in this investigative study. Results: 631 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were identified and retrieved from WoSCC. Among those, 2,233 authors worldwide contributed in the studies, accompanied by an average annual article increase of 24.67%. The articles were co-authored by 764 institutions from 52 countries/regions, and China published the most, followed by Iran and the United States. Five institutions published more than 40 papers, namely Univ Tabriz (n = 79), Tabriz Univ Med Sci (n = 70), Islamic Azad Univ (n = 49), Payame Noor Univ (n = 42) and Texas A&M Univ (n = 41). The articles were published in 198 journals, among which the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (n = 53) published the most articles, followed by Carbohydrate Polymers (n = 24) and ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces (n = 22). The top three journals most locally cited were Carbohydrate Polymers, Biomaterials and Advanced materials. The most productive author was Namazi H (29 articles), followed by Bardajee G (15 articles) and Zhang J (11 articles) and the researchers who worked closely with other ones usually published more papers. "Doxorubicin," "antibacterial" and "responsive hydrogels" represent the current research hotspots in this field and "cancer therapy" was a rising research topic in recent years. "(cancer) therapeutics" and "bioadhesive" represent the current research frontiers. Conclusion: This bibliometric and visualized analysis offered an investigative study and comprehensive understanding of publications regarding the applications of Nanocomposite Hydrogels for drug delivery from 2003 to 2022. The outcome of this study would provide insights for researchers in the field of Nanocomposite Hydrogels applications for drug delivery.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of tissue engineering (TE) is to replace the damaged tissues or failed organs, or restore their missing functions. The important means to achieve this aim is to integrate biomaterials and life elements. Hydrogels are very attractive biomaterials in the field of TE. In particular, engineering extracellular matrices (ECMs) formed by photosensitive hydrogels have captivated much attention, because photopolymerization has many advantages over traditional polymerization approaches, such as rapidity of reaction, spatiotemporal controllability of polymerization process, and operability at physiological temperature, especially it can realize the fabrications of engineering ECMs in the presence of living cells. There have been many excellent reviews on the applications of photosensitive hydrogels in TE in recent years, however, it is inevitable that researchers may have left out many important facts due to exploring the literature from one or a few aspects. It is also a great challenge for researchers to explore the internal relationships among countries, institutions, authors, and references from a large number of literatures in related fields. Therefore, bibliometrics may be a powerful tool to solve the above problems. A bibliometric and visualized analysis of publications concerning the photosensitive hydrogels for TE applications was performed, and the knowledge domain, research hotspots and frontiers in this topic were identified according to the analysis results. Methods: We identified and retrieved the publications regarding the photosensitive hydrogels for TE applications between 1996 and 2022 from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Bibliometric and visualized analysis employing CiteSpace software and R-language package Bibliometrix were performed in this study. Results: 778 publications meeting the eligibility criteria were identified and retrieved from WoSCC. Among those, 2844 authors worldwide participated in the studies in this field, accompanied by an average annual article growth rate of 15.35%. The articles were co-authored by 800 institutions from 46 countries/regions, and the United States published the most, followed by China and South Korea. As the two countries that published the most papers, the United States and China could further strengthen cooperation in this field. Univ Colorado published the most articles (n = 150), accounting for 19.28% of the total. The articles were distributed in 112 journals, among which Biomaterials (n = 66) published the most articles, followed by Acta Biomaterialia (n = 54) and Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A (n = 42). The top 10 journals published 47.8% of the 778 articles. The most prolific author was Anseth K (n = 33), followed by Khademhosseini A (n = 29) and Bryant S (n = 22). A total of 1443 keywords were extracted from the 778 articles and the keyword with the highest centrality was "extracellular matrix" (centrality: 0.12). The keywords appeared recently with strong citation bursts were "gelatin", "3d printing" and "3d bioprinting", representing the current research hotspots in this field. "Gelma", "3d printing" and "thiol-ene" were the research frontiers in recent years. Conclusion: This bibliometric and visualized study offered a comprehensive understanding of publications regarding the photosensitive hydrogels for TE applications from 1996 to 2022, including the knowledge domain, research hotspots and frontiers in this filed. The outcome of this study would provide insights for scholars in the related research filed.

Abstract
Objective: Two-photon polymerization (TPP) utilizes an optical nonlinear absorption process to initiate the polymerization of photopolymerizable materials. To date, it is the only technique capable of fabricating complex 3D microstructures with finely adjusted geometry on the cell and sub-cell scales. TPP shows a very promising potential in biomedical applications related to high-resolution features, including drug delivery, tissue engineering, microfluidic devices, and so forth. Therefore, it is of high significance to grasp the global scientific achievements in this field. An analysis of publications concerning the applications of TPP in the biomedical field was performed, and the knowledge domain, research hotspots, frontiers, and research directions in this topic were identified according to the research results. Methods: The publications concerning TPP applications in biomedical field were retrieved from WoSCC between 2003 and 2022, Bibliometrics and visual analysis employing CiteSpace software and R-language package Bibliometrix were performed in this study. Results: A total of 415 publications regarding the TPP applications in the biomedical field were retrieved from WoSCC, including 377 articles, and 38 review articles. The studies pertaining to the biomedical applications of TPP began back in 2003 and showed an upward trend constantly. Especially in the recent 5 years, studies of TPP in biomedical field have increased rapidly, with the number of publications from 2017 to 2021 accounting for 52.29% of the total. In terms of output, China was the leading country and Chinese Acad Sci, Tech Inst Phys and Chem was the leading institution. The United States showed the closest cooperation with other countries. ACS applied materials and interfaces was the most prolific journal (n = 13), followed by Biofabrication (n = 11) and Optics express (n = 10). The journals having the top cited papers were Biomaterials, Advanced materials, and Applied physic letters. The most productive author was Aleksandr Ovsianikov (27 articles). Meanwhile, researchers who had close cooperation with other researchers were also prolific authors. “cell behavior”, " (tissue engineering) scaffolds”, “biomaterials,” and “hydrogel” were the main co-occurrence keywords and “additional manufacturing”, “3D printing,” and “microstructures” were the recent burst keywords. The Keyword clusters, “stem cells,” and “mucosal delivery”, appeared recently. A paper reporting unprecedented high-resolution bull models fabricated by TPP was the most locally cited reference (cited 60 times). “Magnetic actuation” and “additive manufacturing” were recently co-cited reference clusters and an article concerning ultracompact compound lens systems manufactured by TPP was the latest burst reference. Conclusion: The applications of TPP in biomedical field is an interdisciplinary research topic and the development of this field requires the active collaboration of researchers and experts from all relevant disciplines. Bringing up a better utilization of TPP as an additive manufacturing technology to better serve the biomedical development has always been the research focus in this field. Research on stem cells behaviors and mucosal delivery based on microstructures fabricated using TPP were becoming new hotspots. And it can be predicted that using TPP as a sourcing technique to fabricate biomedical-related structures and devices is a new research direction. In addition, the research of functional polymers, such as magnetic-driven polymers, was the frontier topic of TPP biomedical applications.

CONCLUSION Treatment and pediatric outcomes and the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment may be frontiers in the NAS field, and continued efforts from researchers are needed in those topics.

Abstract
Protozoan parasites interact with a wide variety of organisms ranging from bacteria to humans, representing one of the most common causes of parasitic diseases and an important public health problem affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The current treatment for these parasitic diseases remains unsatisfactory and, in some cases, very limited. Treatment limitations together with the increased resistance of the pathogens represent a challenge for the improvement of the patient’s quality of life. The continuous search for alternative preclinical drugs is mandatory, but the mechanisms of action of several of these compounds have not been described. Electron microscopy is a powerful tool for the identification of drug targets in almost all cellular models. Interestingly, ultrastructural analysis showed that several classes of antiparasitic compounds induced similar autophagic phenotypes in trypanosomatids, trichomonadids, and apicomplexan parasites as well as in Giardia intestinalis and Entamoeba spp. with the presence of an increased number of autophagosomes as well as remarkable endoplasmic reticulum profiles surrounding different organelles. Autophagy is a physiological process of eukaryotes that maintains homeostasis by the self-digestion of nonfunctional organelles and/or macromolecules, limiting redundant and damaged cellular components. Here, we focus on protozoan autophagy to subvert drug effects, discussing its importance for successful chemotherapy.

Abstract
Objective In this study, we aimed to analyze research activity on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks in general and CSF rhinorrhea and otorrhea in particular and to identify the main topic clusters in these areas. Methods We identified all relevant documents, using the medical subject heading (MeSH) term “Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak”, that are indexed in the MEDLINE database between 1945 and 2018. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis and analyses of networks and research clusters in order to identify the main topic areas of research. Results From 1945 to 2018, a total of 4,130 records were published with the term CSF leak, including 2,821 documents (68.1%) with the term CSF rhinorrhea and 1,040 documents (25.8%) with CSF otorrhea. The number of documents published increased from 10 in 1945-49 to 642 in 2010-14. Articles represented the dominant document type (86.8% of the documents analyzed), while case reports were the main type of study (37.4%). In terms of geographical distribution, researchers from the USA led in the number of signatures (39.1%), followed by those from the UK (7.5%). The most active areas of research in the field were “Postoperative Complications,” “Tomography, X-Ray Computed,” and “Magnetic Resonance Imaging.” The terms “Adults,” “Young Adult,” and “Middle-Aged” were most common in CSF rhinorrhea research; and the terms “Infant,” “Child, Preschool,” “Child,” and “Adolescent” were more common in CSF otorrhea. Conclusions Based on our findings, articles and case reports related to “Surgery” and “Postoperative Complications” associated with the diagnosis are the main topics of study, highlighting the importance of this document type in advancing knowledge in the field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Although the epidemiology of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) continues to change, only a few population-based studies have been conducted in Korea. This study investigated the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of PLA patients during a period of 10 years. METHODS We analysed the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data between 2007 and 2017. The data included annual incidence rates, demographic data, underlying diseases, complications and mortality of PLA patients. RESULTS The annual incidence of PLA for all age groups was 10.9 per 100 000 population. The incidence was gradually increased from 5.7 per 100 000 in 2007 to 14.4 per 100 000 in 2017. In patients with liver abscess, the prevalence of diabetes and malignancy were 37.24% and 26.5% respectively. Metastatic infection was reported in 1.74% of the patients, and endophthalmitis was most common. The mean in-hospital mortality was 9.6%, and there was no significant difference in mortality by year during the observation period. Mortality increased with age and was greatly affected by the underlying diseases, especially cancer. Based on the multivariate analysis results, the mortality of PLA patients was associated with older age, female sex, diabetes, malignancy and chronic kidney disease. CONCLUSION The PLA incidence is rapidly increasing in Korea, especially in people with comorbidities. In addition, the causes and risk factors of PLA infections are changing and thus further research on epidemiology, different diagnosis and management approaches is required.

Abstract
Background Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) represent potentially life‐threatening abdominal conditions that require immediate diagnosis and therapy. European and American incidence figures vary between one and 15 per 100,000 per year. Structured epidemiological data for European countries are not available. Objective To systematically characterize the epidemiology and clinical outcome of PLA in Germany. Methods In representative statutory health insurance data from four million people in 2013–2019, the prevalence and incidence with clinical coding of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD)‐10 code K75.0 were selected (n = 1118). Furthermore, demographics, relevant comorbidities, hospitalizations, mortality and complications were determined within one year. Results The incidence of PLA was approximately seven per 100,000. The average age at diagnosis was 66 years; 65% were male. Of these, biliary disease was documented in over 60% and infectious intestinal diseases were found in 21% within the same or previous calendar year. PLA patients had high comorbidity indices. Liver transplant status, malignancies of the liver and biliary system, liver cirrhosis and pancreatitis were strongly associated. Intensive care was documented in 27% of PLA cases. Nine percent died within 12 months, most with an underlying malignant disease. Conclusion Pyogenic liver abscess is a rare disease with high morbidity. Predisposing and risk factors include intestinal and biliary diseases as well as hepatic malignancies. Further research should focus on PLA therapy within prospective surveys and controlled clinical trials.

Abstract
To characterize the microbial communities in abscess material from liver, pancreas, and kidneys, we performed deep sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, in addition to cultivation and Sanger based 16S rRNA gene sequencing directly from the samples. Fifty-nine abscess samples were investigated, 38 from liver, 11 from pancreas, 10 from kidney. Using deep sequencing we made 227 bacterial identifications in 52 specimens, as compared to 69 identifications from the 44 specimens positive by culture. Escherichia coli, Enterococcus sp., Klebsiella sp. and Streptococcus sp. were the most common findings, but various anaerobe bacteria also constituted a large part of the microflora and those were frequently not detected by culture. Culture-independent methods like 16S deep sequencing can significantly improve microbiological diagnostics of clinical specimens. They are particularly valuable for complex purulent infections like abdominal abscesses. Therefore, deep sequencing approaches should be considered as a part of the available repertoire in diagnostic hospital laboratories.

Materials and methods. 137 patients were included in the study and divided on two comparison groups. Traditional methods were used for the treatment of 66 participants of the control group (48.2 %). For 71 patients (51.8 %) of the general group the mini-invasive drainages were predominating.
Results. Cholangiogenic causes of liver abscesses were found in 41 patients (29.93±3.91 %), cryptogenic ones – in 37 (27.01±3.79 %), haematogenous causes – in 29 (21.17±3.49 %), contact ones – in 16 (11.68±2.75 %), posttraumatic ones – in 11 (8.03±2.32 %) and purulent destruction of metastases – in 3 (2.19±1.25 %).
Single abscesses occurred more often – in 117 (85.40±3.02 %), multiple once – in 20 (14.60±3.02 %). Mostly 3, 6 and 7 liver segments were damaged – 19 (13.88±2.95 %), 35 (25.55±3.73 %), 44 (32.12±3.99 %).
In control group, the abscess drainage via laparotomy was performed on 58 patients (87.88±4.02 % of 66 ones) versus 21 (29.58±5.42 % of 71 ones) in general group. Percutaneous drainage was used in 8 (12.12±4.02 %) and in 44 (61.97±5.76 %) cases respectively. 6 or 8.45±3.30 % laparoscopic interventions were used only in the general group. Finally, mini-invasive drainages were applied in the greater part of general group - 50 (70.42±5.42 %) versus 8 ones (12.12±4.02 %) in control group.
Conclusions. Minimally invasive liver abscess drainages showed a significant reduction of postoperative complications from 24.24±5.27 % in the control group to 12.66±3.95 % in the general group, shortening of hospital terms from 14.6±1 in control to 5.2±0.8 days and decreasing of mortality from 7.58±3.26 % to 2.82±1.96 %.
