Abstract
Background and Aims Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a common chronic inflammatory autoimmune illness that mostly affects the oral mucosa but may also affect other mucous membrane. It has higher prevalence in female patients of fourth to sixth decade of life with reticular being the commonest clinical variant. Clinical assessment, patient history, biopsy findings, and immunofluorescence were used to diagnose OLP. This study aimed to assess research publication trends in therapeutic strategies in the treatment of OLP, examining publication growth, country and institution contributions, and collaborative networks. Methods Using the Dimensions and Lens.org databases with Boolean operators combined the keywords a total of 40,046 peer-reviewed international publications were initially assessed. The article was selected from 2014 to December 2023. Through rigorous application of inclusion and exclusion criteria using an advanced search, a subset of 134 papers emerged to meet the high relevance standards. This subset, constituting a representative sample, was selected for in-depth bibliometric analysis. Results and Conclusion The result shows a clear upward trend in the number of publications, with a notable increase in 2018. After 2018, there is decrease in the number of publications, but it has an upward trend, reaching a peak of 215 in 2022. Chaitanya Nallan CSK leads the list of authors with four publications and a respectable total citation count of 12. Cairo University is the leading institution in this data set, with the 8 number of publications and 11 citations. The analysis revealed that at the top of the list is the "Egyptian Dental Journal" from Egypt, with six publications, four citations, and a link strength of two. In the second position is "BMC Oral Health" from the United Kingdom, with five publications, one citation, and a link strength of three. This study offers valuable insights for future research, clinical practice, and policy decisions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the demographic and clinical profiles of oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) diagnosed at a reference center in Southern Brazil from 2010 to 2019. METHODS This retrospective study included 117 cases of suspected OLP submitted for biopsy. Investigated variables comprised sociodemographic profiles, medical history, harmful habits, clinical characteristics, and histopathological features. Categorical and numerical variables were analyzed using chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.01), respectively. RESULTS Applying strict diagnostic criteria, 29% (n = 34) of cases were classified as OLP and 71% (n = 83) as OLL. OLP cases had mainly multifocal manifestations (82.4%), exhibiting a reticular pattern (100%) and primarily occurring on the buccal mucosa (94.1%). Conversely, OLL cases presented both unilateral (48.2%) and multifocal (51.8%) distributions, with a predominantly atrophic-erosive pattern (77.1%) and higher occurrence on the buccal mucosa (69.9%) and tongue (48.2%). OLL patients reported a higher frequency of systemic disorders and medication use (p < 0.01). Hypertension was the most prevalent condition, leading to the frequent use of cardiovascular medications. Two OLL cases without initial dysplasia underwent malignant transformation. CONCLUSION Patient profiles and clinical manifestations of the entities were similar, highlighting the utility of a differential diagnosis, particularly given the apparent association between malignant transformation and OLL cases.

Abstract
Context Oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid mucositis (OLM) are immune-mediated mucosal conditions with multifactorial etiology, with similar clinical and histological characteristics. Diagnosis should be confirmed considering both clinical and histological aspects. Some subsets are associated with immune-mediated thyroid dysfunction due to anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TGA). Aims To ascertain the presence of thyroid autoantibodies in a cohort of patients with OLP and OLM from a South Indian population. Methods and Materials This observational study comprised 21 patients with 7 cases of OLP (Group I) and 14 cases of OLM (Group II) who reported from 2021-2023 for 2 years. Serum anti-thyroid antibodies including TPO and TGA was estimated using chemiluminescence immunoassay technique along with clinical and histological aspects. Altered levels of serological parameters were compared with respect to these auto-immune conditions. Results Increased level of thyroid autoantibodies was observed in three (42%) of the seven cases of OLP. Two cases had elevated TPO (3-4 folds) and TGA (6-38 folds) and the subjects were above 50 years. Seven (50%) of the 14 OLM cases exhibited increased thyroid autoantibody levels and were above 50 years, predominantly females. TPO levels were increased in the range of 12 to 178 and TGA from 2 to 136 folds. Duration of these lesions were more than a year. Conclusions Increased thyroid autoantibodies observed in both OLP and OLM represent an underlying autoimmune response. Long-term monitoring will enable the clinicians to correlate the antibody levels with the management of these lesions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This pilot study aimed to compare the efficacy of 0.1% tacrolimus and 0.05% clobetasol propionate in orabase for treating symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS Pilot, randomized, and controlled study conducted on 21 patients with symptomatic OLP, selected according to the clinical and histopathological criteria of Cheng et al. 2016. Twelve patients received 0.1% tacrolimus, and nine received 0.05% clobetasol, both in orabase for 30 days with a two-month follow-up. The patients were examined for scores of signs (ODSS), symptoms (VAS), quality of life (OHIP-14), anxiety (Beck Anxiety Scale), and treatment satisfaction (Hedonic Scale). RESULTS Both treatments were effective in reducing ODSS, VAS, and Beck Anxiety Scale scores and performed well on the hedonic scale, yet without statistical difference between them. However, at the 1-month follow-up, patients in group Clobetasol showed a greater percentage reduction in ODSS score compared to baseline by 50% (p = 0.02) and significantly lower average values (p = 0.03) than those in group Tacrolimus. Longitudinal intragroup analysis revealed significant improvements over time in both groups for ODSS, and only in the tacrolimus group for OHIP-14 and Beck scores. CONCLUSIONS Both tested protocols were effective over a three-month follow-up. However, due to the lower cost of clobetasol propionate it can be considered the first-choice option. Tacrolimus in orabase formulation may be a promising alternative for refractory lesions that do not respond to topical steroids. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Managing symptomatic OLP is challenging. Comparisons between tacrolimus and clobetasol propionate in orabase formulations have not yet been thoroughly explored.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an inmuno-mediated mucocutaneous chronical inflammatory disease. Multiple predisposing factors are considered, such as autoimmune response, microorganisms, medications, dental materials, psychological stress, genetic predisposition or nutritional deficiencies. The deficiency of vitamin D has been related to various autoimmune diseases like OLP. MATERIAL AND METHODS The electronic search was conducted in the MEDLINE (Pubmed), Scopus, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases. To assess any potential risk of bias, the authors critically appraised each study by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cohort and case-control studies. Pooled analyses were performed using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity of the studies was assessed by the I2 statistics. Forest Plots were performed to graphically represent the difference between vitamin D concentrations in the OLP compared to healthy group, with a 95% confidence interval. RESULTS After applying our inclusion and exclusion criteria, 7 articles were included in our review. The median concentration vitamin D in ng/ml found in serum for patients with OLP was of 26,6311,75ng/ml and for healthy patients was of 31,438,7ng/ml. Regarding the quantitative analysis, 7 studies were included. The difference in the concentration of vitamin D in healthy patients and patients with OLP statistically significant (Weighted Mean Difference (WMD): -6.20, 95% CI: -11.24 to -1.15, p=0.02 and I2 heterogeneity: 94%, p<0.00001). CONCLUSIONS The patients with OLP have statistically lower vitamin D levels than healthy patients.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic idiopathic immune-mediated inflammatory condition. LP is a heterogeneous disease with varied clinical presentations having different natural history, prognosis, sequelae, and outcomes. It can affect skin, hair, nails, and mucosae. Mucosal LP (including oral LP) tends to be persistent and resistant to treatment, compared to cutaneous LP. Oral LP (OLP) is broadly divided into two main categories: hyperkeratotic (usually asymptomatic) and erosive (commonly symptomatic). It can present with symptoms including odynophagia, dysphagia, dysgeusia, and sensitivity to hot spicy foods. Apart from the superficial epidermal changes, which vary with the type of clinical presentation, histopathologically oral LP shows a unifying similar and consistent feature of a lichenoid interface dermatitis. Recently, researchers have highlighted the critical role played by IL-17 in the pathogenesis of OLP. World Health Organization has categorized oral LP as one of the oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), albeit with a low risk of malignant transformation. Also, in the last couple of years there have been various reports on the usage of newer drugs like anti-IL17, anti-IL12/23, anti-IL 23, PDE4 inhibitors, and JAK inhibitors in the management of refractory OLP. The principal aim of treatment still remains to resolve the symptoms, prolong the symptoms free period, and reduce the risk of potential malignant transformation. We have described many new revelations made in recent times regarding the etiopathogenesis, associated conditions as well as management of OLP. Thus, the objective of this review is to present a comprehensive up-to-date knowledge including the recent advances made regarding OLP.

Abstract
Background/purpose Oral lichen planus (OLP) may contribute to the risk of chronic periodontitis, and no reports have shown whether OLP patients with periodontitis have a greater risk of oral precancerous lesions, Candida infection or other clinicopathological diseases. This study aimed to assess the risk factors for the development of oral precancerous lesions in a cohort of 293 OLP patients with or without chronic periodontitis in southern Taiwan. Materials and methods The current study recruited 293 OLP patients without preexisting periodontitis at a tertiary institution from 1995 to 2018. The patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of periodontitis. The study compared various clinical and pathological characteristics between the two groups, and also estimated the odds ratio (OR) and the 10-year cumulative risk of chronic periodontitis in OLP patients using logistic regression models and Kaplan‒Meier analysis methods, respectively. Results After adjusting for age and gender, the significant contributors to oral precancerous lesions in OLP patients (P < 0.05) were periodontal disease (OR = 2.24) and the male gender (OR = 7.52). Betel nut consumption (OR = 2.61), smoking (OR = 2.46), and candidiasis infection (OR = 3.02) also showed significant associations. Older OLP patients had a lower lesion risk, while a longer OLP duration heightened the periodontal disease likelihood. Conclusion The present study demonstrated that coexisting periodontal disease increases the likelihood of developing precancerous lesions in patients with OLP. Periodontal management with oral hygiene care and quitting betel nut consumption and smoking can reduce the risk.

Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease whose pathogenesis involves a T-cell mediated, epithelium-directed inflammation in response to unknown antigen(s). The disease evolves by intermittent flares and displays polymorphous clinical features (reticular, erosive, atrophic, plaque, papular, bullous, etc.). When present, symptoms vary depending on the clinical form and range from discomfort to severe pain. Topical superpotent corticosteroids constitute the first-line treatment of symptomatic flares, whereas a wide range of second/third-line treatments are available among topical calcineurin inhibitors, systemic corticosteroids, systemic retinoids, topical/systemic immunomodulators, etc. Follow-up of patients is necessary to detect transformation into squamous cell carcinoma, occurring in approximately 1% of patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Aim: To learn more about Oral Lichen Planus Iraqi patients, including their background information, symptoms, and prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and Methods: From the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department, College of Dentistry, Baghdad University, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 68 patients with a histologically confirmed clinical diagnosis of oral lichen planus and subsequently contacted the patients by phone to evaluate their prognosis. RESULTS Results: Females were more likely than males to experience severe pain; the reticular form of Oral Lichen Planus was the most prevalent at 38.2%, but the erosive type was more prevalent among females. Only 53 of 68 patients responded to phone calls. More than 37% of those respondents reported involvement at a second location intra-orally following the first oral manifestation, and 20% had extraoral Lichen Planus, and approximately 22.6% of them observed changes in the morphology and behavior of the lesion after a brief period of time, while 26.4% experienced complete remission. CONCLUSION Conclusions: Females were more likely to have oral lichen planus. Females and elderly persons were more likely to have severe pain than other. The lesion must be monitored for symptomatic flare-ups over time.

Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucocutaneous condition that affects up to 2% of the general population, and typically presents with long-standing, non-responsive lesions, with episodes of exacerbation and remissions. The etiopathogenesis of OLP is still unclear, although, it has been postulated that it is most likely a T-cell-mediated condition of an unknown antigen. The treatment remains a challenge with no defined treatment strategy. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, along with its regulatory effect on keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation; thus, suggesting its possible role in the treatment of OLP. This systematic review aims to evaluate the therapeutic role of vitamin D in OLP treatment. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, and Google scholar search engines for studies evaluating vitamin D as a treatment modality in OLP from January 2000 to August 2022. Articles were searched with the combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms. A web platform for visualizing risk-of-bias assessment was used in this review, and descriptive statistics were calculated. Out of the seventeen retrieved studies, five articles meeting the inclusion criteria were considered in this systematic review. All the included studies demonstrated significant amelioration in the OLP symptoms in patients who were given vitamin D supplements as an adjuvant to the conventional steroid therapy and or placebo. This systematic review signifies the role of vitamin D as adjuvant therapy for OLP. However, more studies with larger sample size are required to validate these results.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a frequent, chronic inflammatory disease involving the skin, mucous membranes and/or skin appendages. Esophageal involvement in lichen planus (ELP) is a clinically important albeit underdiagnosed inflammatory condition. This narrative review aims to give an overview of the current knowledge on ELP, its prevalence, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic options in order to provide support in clinical management. Studies on ELP were collected using PubMed/Medline. Relevant clinical and therapeutical characteristics from published patient cohorts including our own cohort were extracted and summarized. ELP mainly affects middle-aged women. The principal symptom is dysphagia. However, asymptomatic cases despite progressed macroscopic esophageal lesions may occur. The pathogenesis is unknown, however an immune-mediated mechanism is probable. Endoscopically, ELP is characterized by mucosal denudation and tearing, trachealization, and hyperkeratosis. Scarring esophageal stenosis may occur in chronic courses. Histologic findings include mucosal detachment, T-lymphocytic infiltrations, epithelial apoptosis (Civatte bodies), dyskeratosis, and hyperkeratosis. Direct immuno-fluorescence shows fibrinogen deposits along the basement membrane zone. To date, there is no established therapy. However, treatment with topical steroids induces symptomatic and histologic improvement in two thirds of ELP patients in general. More severe cases may require therapy with immunosuppressors. In symptomatic esophageal stenosis, endoscopic dilation may be necessary. ELP may be regarded as a precancerous condition as transition to squamous cell carcinoma has been documented in literature. ELP is an underdiagnosed yet clinically important differential diagnosis for patients with unclear dysphagia or esophagitis. Timely diagnosis and therapy might prevent potential sequelae such as esophageal stenosis or development of invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Further studies are needed to gain more knowledge about the pathogenesis and treatment options.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an important inflammatory disease concerning its tendency to malignancy. The etiopathogenesis of this disease is still unknown. Medical geography uses geographic techniques to study factors related to location that cause uneven distribution of disease. PURPOSE This study was conducted to map OLP in patients referred to Shiraz Dental School with medical geography techniques and investigate any possible relationship between the number of dentists and health-centers in different regions of Fars province with the number of referrals. MATERIALS AND METHOD In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the records of OLP patients referred to Shiraz Dental School from 2007 to 2018. Age, sex, place of residence, occupation, level of education, location of involvement, duration, and cutaneous involvement were recorded. The number of dentists and healthcare centers was obtained from the statistical records of Fars province. A Geographic Information System was used for the assessment of the spatial distribution of OLP. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) indices were used for evaluating the relationship between the number of dentists and health centers with the number of referrals. RESULTS From 1006 records, 457 were studied, from which 71% were female (age range of 41-60). The regression coefficient was 0.937 for the number of dentists in each county compared to OLP referrals indicating a strong relationship. The regression coefficient was 0.983 for the number of health-centers. According to GWR analyses in Shiraz neighboring counties like Marvdasht, Sepidan, and Sarvestan, there is a positive relationship between the number of dentists and OLP patients. CONCLUSION The results revealed that dentists and health care centers had a good cognition of referring patients with OLP (as a premalignant lesion) for definite diagnosis in Fars counties. But both groups need more education in this matter. Moreover, referrals from settlements near Shiraz were more common because of their easier access.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the lockdown on oral oncology-related out-patient volume at Indian dental institutions. MATERIALS AND METHODS The total number of newly diagnosed cases of oral submucous fibrosis, oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, and oral cancers, recorded at two dental institutional settings before lockdown (January-March 2020) and after lockdown (June-August 2020), were included retrospectively and compared. RESULTS The study included a total of 797 cases at both institutions. At Institution-I, a total of 312 cases were recorded before the lockdown, and 63 cases were recorded after the lockdown. At Institution-II, a total of 311 cases were reported before lockdown, and 111 cases were recorded after lockdown. Comparisons between the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown data yielded a significant change in the proportions of oral sub-mucous fibrosis, oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, and oral cancers at both institutions (Chi-square test; p < 0.001). Following the lockdown, a substantial reduction was observed in the proportion of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) cases at both institutions, and the proportion of oral cancers increased at both institutions. There was a significant difference between the proportions of cases reported before lockdown at both institutions (p < 0.001). However, after-lockdown, no such differences were noted (p = 0.69); the absence of significance could most likely be due to the low sample size or low-power during the post-lockdown period. CONCLUSION The oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral cancer (OC) patient volumes reduced substantially following lockdown. During the post-lockdown period, the proportion of oral cancers increased, whereas the proportion of OSMF cases decreased. Results indicate that OPMD and oral cancer patients were impacted differently by the lockdown. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study provides insight into the impact of lockdown and highlights the importance of reestablishing oral oncology-related patient care. Abstract
Background:
Oral lichen planus is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disease that affects the skin and mucous membrane and involves about 1-2% of the population. The management of this pathology aims to control symptoms. Clinically, it can appear as a plaque, in reticular form, or an erythematous/atrophic form. The treatment options include different classes of drugs and non-drug therapies such as a laser. In addition, most drug treatments include numerous side effects.
Objective:
The aim of this work is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a particular type of very Low-Level-Laser Therapy for the management of an erosive oral lichen planus case.
Methods:
An extensive form of erosive Oral Lichen Planus was treated using a Low-Level Laser Therapy with a 660 nm diode laser. The treatment was performed once per week for two sessions of five minutes each. Different outcome variables were examined: the size of lesions, evolution of pain symptoms, and presence of side effects and stability of the therapeutic results in the follow-up period.
Results:
After a week, the lesion appeared more homogenous, and the erythematous areas underwent a reduction with a simultaneous decrease in symptoms. After two weeks, the lesion seemed completely healed with the disappearance of pain. The follow-up continued for the other four months, and no relapse was reported. No adverse effects were observed during the study.
Conclusion:
This study suggests that Low-Level Laser Therapy with very low power parameters could be a safe and successful treatment for extended oral erosive lichen planus lesions.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic autoimmune disease. Oral lesions may occur in isolation or in combination with other affected muco-cutaneous sites. Oral LP (OLP) may present as one of the various manifestations of LP or may present as a disease sui generis with a broad range of severity. Despite this disease targeting the oral mucosa, its great impact on quality of life is underrated. In this article, we provide an updated review of the pathophysiology and epidemiology of OLP and offer guidance for its diagnosis and management. We also propose an algorithmic approach to the clinical forms of OLP and a novel staging system to facilitate management decisions.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic autoimmune condition of uncertain etiopathogenesis and usually affects the skin, oro-genital mucosa, nail and scalp appendages. LP is primarily seen in middle-aged individuals, and oral lesions of LP in children are relatively uncommon. Herewith, we report a case of oral LP in an 8-year-old boy, which regressed well with the treatment modality.

Abstract
Background Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and mucous membrane presented with various clinical appearances. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the clinical profile of patients with OLP. Material and Methods The dental records of 102 patients who visited Oral Medicine Clinic, Dental Hospital, Naresuan University during 2002-2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Results There were 75 (73.5%) women and 27 (26.5%) men, giving a female to male ratio of 2.8:1. The age of OLP patients ranged 20-81 years old with the mean age of 56.4 ± 13.2 years old. Seventy-eight patients (76.5%) had the history of systemic diseases and hypertension was the predominantly one. Most patients were non-smokers (98%), non-drinkers (86.3%) and non-betel nut chewers (98%). The atrophic form (93.1%) was the most common OLP. The lesions were mainly symptomatic (92.2%) and involved multiple locations (67.6%) where the buccal mucosa (79.4%) primarily affected. Only 2% were extraoral lesions detected on the skin. Patients had no family history of OLP or malignant transformation. Ninety-one patients (89.2%) were treated with topical steroid and only 4 patients were prescribed a combination of tropical and systemic steroid. Conclusions The results of the study indicated that most of characteristics are in accordance with previous studies. Since, OLP is a chronic inflammatory oral mucosal disease with high recurrence rate, early detection, accurately diagnosis, and long-term follow-up are necessary to evaluate the exacerbation and malignant transformation.
