Figure 1 Formation of exosomes. Early endosomes are produced in the endosomal compartments of cells though inward budding of the cell membrane. Multi-vesicular body (MVB) are formed when the early endosome buds inward into the endosomal lumen creating intraluminal vesicles (ILVs). If the MVB fuses with the cell surface (the plasma membrane), these ILVs are released as exosomes.
