Abstract
Background/Objectives: Rapid palatal expansion is commonly used to correct maxillary deficiencies. However, medications like Isotretinoin may influence bone remodeling during treatment. Isotretinoin, a drug used to treat acne, was the focus of this study, which aimed to evaluate its effect on bone repair after rapid palatal suture expansion in rats. Methods: The sample consisted of 40 Wistar rats, divided into two groups: the control group (CG), subjected only to orthodontic movement, and the experimental isotretinoin group (IG), where movement occurred after drug administration. Periods of 0, 7, and 14 days after the installation of the orthodontic device were analyzed, with a force of 30 g applied in all groups using a steel spring. After euthanasia, the maxillae were removed and analyzed via Micro-CT, histologically, and histomorphometrically. Results: The results showed that the expander was effective in promoting the expansion of the palatal suture. After 14 days, the total expansion was 381% (CG) and 299% (IG); the percentage of vessels in the connective tissue increased by 145% in CG and 84% in IG; and bone formation in both groups occupied 52% of the expanded palatal suture. No significant differences were observed between the groups regarding collagen fiber formation. Conclusions: It was concluded that the daily administration of Isotretinoin at the standard dose for the treatment of severe acne does not cause significant alterations in the bone repair process following the opening of the median palatine suture in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of systemically given krill oil (KO) on the development of new bone formation in the sutura palatina media following rapid maxillary expansion (RME). METHODS 28 4-5 week-old male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: Control (C), Only Expansion (OE) (no supplement but undergoing expansion and retention), KE (supplemented during both the expansion and retention phases), Krill Oil Nursery Group (KN) (supplemented during the 40-day nursery phase as well as during the expansion and retention phases). A 5-day RME was followed by a 12-day retention period. All rats were euthanized simultaneously. Micro-computerized tomography (Micro-CT), hemotoxylen-eosin (H&E) staining, and immunohistochemical analysis were conducted. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests with Bonferonni corrrection were applied (p < 0.05). RESULTS Expansion and KO supplementation did not cause a statistically significant change in bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume fraction (BV/TV), spesific bone surface (BS/BV) and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th). While the expansion prosedure increased the trabecular seperation (Tb.Sp), KO supplemantation mitigated this effect. The KE group exhibited a statistically significantly increase in trabecular number (Tb.N) compared to the OE group. Although receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa-Β ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) ratios did not show significant differences between groups, the KE and OE groups demonstrated the lowest and highest value, respectively. KE showed a reduced amount of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) compared to the OE. CONCLUSION KO positively affected the architecture of the new bone formed in the mid-palatal suture. In this rat model of RME, results support the idea that administering of KO during the expansion period or beginning before the RME procedure may reduce relapse and enhance bone formation within the mid-palatal suture.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Maxillary constriction is a relatively common condition. Various treatment modalities have been proposed for this condition such as rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Although RME can significantly expand the suture in a relatively short period of time, it has a number of drawbacks, mainly a lengthy retention period. The primary objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of the supplementary methods used in conjunction with RME for new bone formation (NBF) at the midpalatal suture (MPS). Relapse, bone healing, and root resorption were also studied as the secondary outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library online databases were searched according to the PRISMA-ScR guideline. Animal studies on the effects of non-surgical supplementary methods other than laser therapy on NBF in RME were included and reviewed. RESULT Thirty-eight articles met the inclusion criteria. The supplementary methods were categorized into 6 groups: hormones, chemical agents, drugs, vitamins, proteins, and some other substances, which could not be assigned to any group. All the aforementioned substances enhanced NBF. Drugs such as bisphosphonates also increased bone resorption. The oestrogen hormone was shown to reduce treatment relapse. Lastly, stem cell application accelerated bone healing at the expanded MPS. CONCLUSION Administration of hormones, chemical agents, drugs, vitamins, herbs, and proteins may improve the outcomes of RME, shorten the retention period and consequently, reduce relapse in animals. However, the generalizability of these findings is limited due to the insubstantial number of studies published on each substance.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of systemic administration of Salvia officinalis Linnaeus (L.) leaf extract on new bone formation in the expanded premaxillary suture in rats in vivo and to examine the antioxidant effects and phenolic profile of Salvia officinalis (SO) leaf and root extracts in vitro. METHODS Fourteen male Sprague Dawley rats were allocated to two groups: SO group (n = 7) and control group (n = 7). An open-loop spring was attached to the upper incisors of each rat to expand the premaxillae. A 5-day expansion period followed by a 12-day retention period was observed. The rats in the SO group received systemic administration of 20 mg SO/kg/day via the orogastric route for 17 days. Histomorphometric examinations were carried out to examine the amount of new bone formation, number of capillaries, and intensity of inflammatory cell response. Immunohistochemical analysis was conducted to examine the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Leaf and root extracts of SO were also analyzed for antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds in vitro. RESULTS Statistical analysis showed that the following were higher in the SO group than in the control group: new bone formation, number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, intensity of inflammatory cell response (neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages), and number of capillaries. The major compound identified in SO leaf extract was rosmarinic acid, while luteolin derivatives, salvianolic acid F, and medioresinol were also present. CONCLUSIONS Salvia officinalis L. from leaf extract provided antioxidant effects and stimulated enhanced new bone formation in the expanded midpalatal suture after maxillary expansion in rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effect of systemically administered methylphenidate hydrochloride (MPH) on new bone formation in premaxillary suture after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION Thirty-three Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Group 1 (high dose, 30/60 mg/kg MPH), Group 2 (low dose, 4/10 mg/kg MPH), Group 3 (positive control) and Group 4 (negative control). METHODS RME was applied on the 70th day of the study. A 5-day RME period was followed by a 12-day retention period. The experiment was terminated on the 87th day. Micro-CT for radiological evaluation, haematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome staining methods were used for histomorphometric evaluation. RESULTS Among experimental groups with RME, the lowest number of osteoblasts and capillaries in Group 1 (P < .05). New bone formation, fibrous callus formation, distal osteotomy line, proximal osteotomy union and cortex remodelling were observed to be lower in Group 1 and Group 2 than Group 3 (P < .05). There was a statistically significant difference between Group 4 and each of the other groups (P = .000) in the evaluation of the results for bone mineral density, bone volume, bone volume percentage, trabecular thickness and trabecular number. CONCLUSIONS MPH reduces cellular activity for new bone formation in suture in RME groups. Before performing rapid maxillary expansion in patients using MPH, the use of the drug should be postponed after a multidisciplinary decision process or clinical doses should be lowered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the effects of Salvianolic acid B (Sal B) on new bone formation in the orthopedically expanded premaxillary sutures in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample consisting of Sprague Dawley rats (male, n = 14) was split in half by random selection: the experiment group (Sal B) and the control group. The premaxillary suture of each rat was expanded by bonding an open-loop spring to two maxillary incisors, each end to one tooth. A 5-day expansion period followed by a 12-day retention period was conducted. The 17-day intraperitoneal administration of Sal B was performed daily for the experiment group at a dose of 40 mg/kilo. The trial was completed after sacrificing the rats and dissection of the premaxillae for histological analysis. The amount of new bone, quantity of capillaries and intensity of inflammatory cells were histomorphometrically determined while the quantities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were determined immunohistochemically. RESULTS The Sal B group was significantly different from the control group and had greater quantities of new bone, capillaries, inflammatory cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. CONCLUSIONS Salvianolic acid B displays a positive effect during premaxillary expansion with a greater number of capillaries potentially in association with higher bone formation and improved angiogenesis in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palatal expansion treatment has been used to expand the constricted maxillary arch and has become a routine procedure in orthodontic practice over the past decades. However, the long-term stability of expansion in the permanent dentition without a surgical approach is uncertain.
CASE SUMMARY We present the case of a 15-year-old boy with Class II malocclusion and constricted arches. The patient was treated with rapid palatal expansion (RPE) followed by a fixed orthodontic appliance. A 7-year follow-up evaluation was performed by analyzing cephalometric radiographs, plaster models, and photographs. The patient’s constricted maxillary and mandibular arches were relived after the expansion treatment. A Class I occlusion and normal arch form were established and maintained in the long-term.
CONCLUSION RPE treatment is successful in solving constricted dental arch in the permanent dentition without a surgical approach. Permanent retention and even occlusal contact help prevent long-term relapse.

Abstract
Diets included high-fat (HFD) and high calories intake is correlated with greater risk of obesity and oxidative stress, which lead to increase the risk of related diseases such as cardiovascular and metabolic disease. In the present study, we have examined the hypolipidemic activity of Hypericum Scabrum extract on HFD fed rats. Fifty-four male Wistar rats divided into six groups: 1) control, 2) H. Scabrum extract (100 mg/kg gavage per day), 3) H. Scabrum extract (300 mg/kg), 4) HFD, 5) HFD and H. Scabrum extract (100 mg/kg), 6) HFD and H. Scabrum extract (300 mg/kg). The groups were fed their diet and treatment for 3 months. Biochemical analysis showed elevated lipid serum profile in HFD rats compared to control group. H. Scabrum extract supplementation significantly ameliorated triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. H. Scabrum extract supplementation leading to increase HDL-cholesterol in HFD treated groups. This experiment showed that H. Scabrum extract decreased HFD complications and might be beneficial herbal drug for treatment of hyperlipidemia and obesity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to examine the effects of isotretinoin on new bone formation after maxillary sutural expansion in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 male Wistar rats were selected and randomly divided into four groups. The isotretinoin group was treated with 7.5 mg/kg isotretinoin, and the soybean group was treated with 2 ml/kg soybean oil for 57 days. The substances were applied via oral gavage. The expansion-only and the control groups were not treated with any substance. In the experiment groups, expansion springs were applied on day 41 of the experiment, and after day 5 of expansion, a 12-day retention period was established. At the end of the experiment, all the animals were sacrificed, and their maxillae were dissected for histological evaluation. The numbers of osteoclasts, osteoblasts and formation of new bone and capillaries were evaluated on slides centered around the suture. RESULTS The statistical analysis showed significant differences between the groups for the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts (p < 0.001). In the experiment groups, higher numbers of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were detected in comparison to the control group (p < 0.001), while there was no significant difference between the experiment groups. Capillary formation and new bone formation in the isotretinoin group were found to be on a higher level than in the other groups (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Isotretinoin had no negative effects on bone formation following the expansion of the maxillary suture in rats.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of the Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort) on bone healing in rabbit calvarium. Ten male New Zealand rabbits each had three bicortical defects made in the calvarial bones, which were filled with xenograft, xenograft+H perforatum oil extract, and autogenous graft. Four weeks postoperatively all rabbits were killed and the bony defects examined histomorphometrically. Tissue compartments including new bone (p<0.001), marrow space (p<0.001), and residual bone grafts (p=0.014) differed significantly among groups. The volume of residual graft was significantly decreased in the xenograft/H perforatum group compared with those with xenografts alone (p=0.0147). The differences in microarchitectural variables of de novo bone formation were also significant (trabecular thickness (p<0.001), trabecular width (p<0.001), trabecular separation (p=0.001). There were no significant differences in node:terminus ratio between the xenograft/H perforatum group and the other two groups. However, the difference in node:terminus ratio between the autogenous graft and xenograft group was significant (p=0.001) Oil extracts of H perforatum improved bony healing in defects filled with bovine-derived xenografts.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of long and short term systemic usage of royal jelly on bone formation in the expanded maxillary suture in a rat model. Material and Methods Twenty eight Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups: Control (C); Only Expansion (OE), Royal Jelly (RJ) group, Royal Jelly was given to rats by oral gavage only during the expansion and retention period; Royal Jelly plus Nursery (RJN) group, Royal Jelly was given to rats by oral gavage during their nursery phase of 40 days and during the retention period. After the 5 day expansion period was completed, the rats underwent 12 days of mechanical retention. All rats were sacrificed in same time. Histological examination was performed to determine the number of osteoclasts, number of osteoblasts, number of capillaries, inflammatory cell infiltration, and new bone formation. Results New bone formation, number of osteoclasts, number of osteoblasts, and the number of capillaries in the expanded maxillary sutures were higher in the RJ and RJN groups than in the other groups. Statistical analysis also demonstrated that new bone formation and the number of osteoblasts was also highest in the RJN group. Conclusions The systemic administration of Royal Jelly in conjunction with rapid maxillary expansion may increase the quality of regenerated bone.
