Abstract
Depression and cognitive disorders remain major challenges in healthcare, with conventional treatments often facing limitations such as slow onset, side effects, and poor drug delivery to the brain. Biomimetic nanodelivery systems, including nanozymes, cell membrane-based systems, and exosomes, have emerged as promising solutions to these issues. These systems leverage natural biological processes to enhance drug targeting, improve bioavailability, and regulate complex biological pathways. Nanoenzymes, with their catalytic properties, offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, while cell membranes and exosomes provide efficient targeting and immune evasion. However, challenges remain, including the immaturity of large-scale production techniques, stability concerns, and incomplete understanding of their mechanisms of action. Moreover, the long-term safety, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity of these systems require further investigation. Despite these obstacles, the potential of biomimetic nanodelivery systems to revolutionize depression treatment is significant. Future research should focus on optimizing their preparation, improving drug targeting and release, and ensuring clinical safety. Multidisciplinary collaboration will be essential for advancing these systems from the laboratory to clinical practice, offering new therapeutic avenues for depression and other neurological disorders.

Abstract
Latinx immigrants have an increased risk of depression and other negative mental health problems. Community health workers (CHWs) have a history of bridging the divide between marginalized communities and health care systems. Since 2019, we have been implementing and evaluating a ten 1-hour-sessions intervention delivered by a CHW and adapted from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness exercises, and behavioral activation to treat mild to severe depressive symptoms and anxiety. There has been little research on the subjective experiences of the participants receiving mental health services delivered by CHW. Our study's purpose was to explore the perceptions and experiences of participants in the intervention. To better understand the experiences of Latinx participants in the intervention, we conducted in-depth 1-hour interviews with participants who completed the 10 intervention sessions. Twenty-nine participants provided responses. Participant discussions about their experience with the intervention centered around three main themes: desperation as a motivator to accept the intervention, changed perceptions of self, and feelings of support. Results show that participants perceived the program as beneficial for their mental health and well-being by influencing their sense of self and self-worth and by feeling supported by the CHW. CHWs have the potential to address gaps in mental health service access experienced among Latinx immigrants. However, more research needs to continue investigating effective engagement strategies for treating depression and anxiety among Latinx immigrant patients.

Abstract
There is a need for objective, easy and relatively short methods to diagnose cognition in depression. We have constructed a set of simple visual tasks using three different ways of speed measuring: paper-pencil-based, computer-based, and eye-tracking based. We used a single case design with 22 participants. A clinical group counted 11 patients with major depression examined two times (first examination without medication and second after three months of medical treatment) together with a group of 11 matched healthy controls. Cognitive difficulties were observable in all the checked levels of performance. The weakest in all tasks were patients before medication, some improvement was observed after medical treatment, but not matching the level of healthy controls. Cognitive difficulties were not eliminated by medical treatment as quickly as emotional disturbances were. The observed difficulties could be interpreted in terms of psychomotor retardation, a typical symptom in depression, which proved to be mainly cognitive as the analysis of differences in reaction times and the first saccade latencies concluded. The analysis of simple visual reaction times on several stages turned out to be a promising method to measure the cognitive state in persons with mood disorders and cognitive convalescence during major depressive disorder treatment.

Abstract
This study assesses the association between water and sanitation quality with depressive symptoms across urban and rural areas in Indonesia. A cross-sectional study involving 30,446 participants using Indonesian Family Life Survey wave 5 (IFLS-5). Multivariate logistic regression models and mediation analysis were used. Among rural residents, unimproved water sources (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.01-1.26), un-boiled water consumption (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.27-1.68), and open defecation facility (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.09-1.41) were associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms. On the other hand, environmentally unfriendly garbage disposal was associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74-0.91). In urban areas, similarly, unimproved water sources (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.18-1.54), un-boiled water consumption (OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.20-1.71), open defecation facility (OR: 1.16, 95% CI: 0.99-1.36), and limited sanitation facility (OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.01-1.31) were associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms, while environmentally unfriendly garbage disposal increased the odds (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.06-1.23). No significance was noted regarding drainage sewage quality either for rural or urban areas. Mediation analysis indicated that comorbidity is significantly mediating WASH variables and depressive symptoms highlight the need for targeted interventions.

Abstract
In the United States (US), a longstanding solution to the unmet need for mental health treatment is integrated behavioral health care (IBH). Within a primary care model, problems are identified and treatment combines care for physical, mental and substance use disorders. Treatments are delivered through the collaboration of primary and behavioral health providers. According to US federal billing guidelines, in one integrated model, the Collaborative Care Model (CoCM), the psychiatric consultant must be a medical professional trained in psychiatry and capable of prescribing medications, i.e., either a psychiatrist, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Physician Assistant. The development of integrated care has been slow for particular vulnerable populations, in part due to the lack of psychiatric consultants. PMHNPs are increasingly taking on the role of psychiatric consultants on CoCM teams and creating nurse-led IBH models for underserved populations. In this paper, eight such models are discussed along with implementation challenges and the strategies used to address them. Nurse leaders have the capacity to enhance and expand integrated care, particularly for underserved populations, through the optimal utilization of care teams, expanding measured outcomes, and developing measures for team-based effectiveness. Future directions are proposed that will accelerate this PMHNP-led expansion of IBH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is a shortage of reliable tools to evaluate general practitioners' (GPs) ability to recognise and manage depression. The main aim of this study was to develop and validate a reliable tool for assessing the GPs' ability to recognise and manage depression. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey incorporating the GPs' ability to recognise and manage the depression assessment scale, the work was administered between July 2023 and June 2024. GPs' ability to recognise and manage the depression assessment scale was developed in four phases: (1) item pool construction, (2) expert consultation, (3) exploratory factor analysis for further item reduction and to identify the factor structure of the revised scale and (4) confirmatory factor analyses to confirm the factors identified within the exploratory factor analysis. SETTING Primary healthcare in China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 421 GPs participated in the study across phases 3 and 4. Phase 3 included 172 GPs, and phase 4 involved 249 GPs. They had been working in primary healthcare, with 44.42% having more than 10 years of experience. Of the participants, 57% were female. RESULTS The GPs' ability to recognise and manage the depression assessment scale comprised two dimensions, with 24 items. Two factors explained 66.62% of the items' variance through exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed two dimensions of the scale and produced appropriate Goodness of Fit Indexes. Reliability was robust, with composite reliability coefficients exceeding 0.60, Cronbach's alpha at 0.96 and a Spearman-Brown coefficient of 0.86. CONCLUSIONS The newly developed scale is a reliable and valid tool for assessing GPs' abilities to recognise and manage depression. It is suitable for large-scale surveys, particularly in underdeveloped regions, and can help identify gaps in knowledge. The scale results highlight areas where GPs' skills are lacking, enabling the design of targeted continuing education programmes. It can also assess the effectiveness of depression training courses, providing a foundation for tailored interventions.

Abstract
Luteolin is a natural flavonoid compound exists in various fruits and vegetables. Recent studies have indicated that luteolin has variety pharmacological effects, including a wide range of antidepressant properties. Here, we systematically review the preclinical studies and limited clinical evidence on the antidepressant and neuroprotective effects of luteolin to fully explore its antidepressant power. Network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses contribute to a better understanding of the preclinical models of depression and antidepressant properties of luteolin. Seventeen preclinical studies were included that combined network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses to clarify the antidepressant mechanism of luteolin and its antidepressant targets. The antidepressant effects of luteolin may involve promoting intracellular noradrenaline (NE) uptake; inhibiting 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) reuptake; upregulating the expression of synaptophysin, postsynaptic density protein 95, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, B cell lymphoma protein-2, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione S-transferase; and decreasing the expression of malondialdehyde, caspase-3, and amyloid-beta peptides. The antidepressant effects of luteolin are mediated by various mechanisms, including anti-oxidative stress, anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammation, anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress, dopamine transport, synaptic protection, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulation, and 5-HT metabolism. Additionally, we identified insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R), AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT1), prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1), and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) as potential targets, luteolin has an ideal affinity for these targets, suggesting that it may play a positive role in depression through multiple targets, mechanisms, and pathways. However, the clinical efficacy of luteolin and its potential direct targets must be confirmed in further multicenter clinical case-control and molecular targeting studies.

Abstract
Depression is the leading contributor to disability and suicide ideation. Informed by the insights from bioinformatics analyses, this study investigates the roles of E2F transcription factor 2 (E2F2) and protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 6 (PTPN6) in the activation of microglia and the manifestation of depressive-like behavior in mice. Chronic unpredictable mild stress was applied to induce a mouse model of depression, while a cellular model featuring microglia was established through exposure to lipopolysaccharide and adenosine triphosphate. E2F2 was upregulated whereas PTPN6 was downregulated in these models. Notably, E2F2 was found to bind to the PTPN6 promoter, thereby repressing its transcription. Various behavioral tests demonstrated that silencing of E2F2, accomplished via shRNA transfection, led to increased locomotor activity, heightened social interaction rates, enhanced sucrose preference, and reduced immobility time in response to stress stimuli in mice. Furthermore, E2F2 silencing effectively reduced expression of Iba1, a microglial activation marker, and decreased concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines both in vivo and in vitro. However, these mitigating effects were countered by additional PTPN6 silencing. In conclusion, this study investigation underscores the role of E2F2 in promoting inflammatory activation of microglia and exacerbating depressive-like behavior in mice by repressing PTPN6 transcription.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Positive psychological interventions (PPIs) are known to be effective in alleviating depression. However, the effect of PPIs on positive and negative emotions in depressed participants is not unclear. AIMS To systematically investigate the effects of PPIs on positive and negative emotions in depressed individuals. METHODS 6 databases were searched for randomized controlled trials of PPIs in individuals with depressive disorders or depressive symptoms. Hedges' g value was computed using a random-effects model to determine effect sizes. RESULTS 14 trials from 13 studies were included. Our meta-analysis showed that PPIs had significant but small effects on improving positive affect (g = 0.33, p = .02), life satisfaction (g = 0.26, p = .03), happiness (g = 0.62, p = .03) and depression (g = -0.32, p = .001), and negligible effects on improving well-being (g = 0.13, p = .24) and negative affect (g = -0.15, p = .31). Subgroup analyses of depression showed that PPIs have experienced benefits in improving depression in most subgroups. In addition, none of the subgroup analyses performed for outcomes other than depression found PPIs to be more effective than controls. CONCLUSION PPIs can improve positive affect, life satisfaction, happiness and depression in depressed individuals, but further studies are needed to validate their effects on well-being, and negative affect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The risk factors for motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) remains unclear, and a lack of predictive studies on the risk of developing MCR. This proof-of-concept study aims to investigate the risk factors of MCR, and develop and internally validate a prediction system to assess the risk of MCR in older Chinese adults. METHODS Through performing a meta-analysis to obtain the risk factors and pooled risk ratio of MCR, the Rothman-Keller model which could be used to predict risk level of MCR was constructed. A total of 5020 participants from the CHARLS were used to validate discrimination and calibration of model. Predictive performance was assessed using AUC-ROC, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. RESULTS The pooled prevalence of MCR was 12.0 %. The results of the meta-analysis showed that there are eleven significant risk factors of MCR, including age, sex, marital status, diabetes, stroke, depression, falls, physical inactivity, social isolation, fear responses, and hospitalization, with RRi of 3.00, 1.29, 1.21, 1.53, 2.90, 2.13, 2.95, 1.46, 0.79, 1.55, and 1.31, respectively. Rothman-Keller model performed well to predict MCR risk with an AUC-ROC of 0.631 (95 %CI: 0.610-0.653), and the score was well calibrated (chi-square test for goodness-of-fit = 5.981, P = 0.649). CONCLUSIONS MCR is highly prevalent in China, caused by the complex interaction of genetics, comorbidities, and lifestyle factors. This study serves as proof-of-concept that Rothman-Keller model performs a good calibration and fair discrimination, which can be used as a simple, time-saving, and cost-effective mean to assess and monitor the risk level of MCR.

Abstract
Background Psychological pain is the most important factor affecting suicide rates. However, the factors contributing to psychological pain in medical students remain poorly understood. Objective This study aimed to investigate the effects of a stress mindset on psychological pain and the mediating roles of cognitive reappraisal and self-identity among Chinese medical students. Methods Medical students (N = 2056; 1,369, 66.60% female; 683, 33.40% male) from China completed multiple measures of stress mindset, self-identity, cognitive reappraisal, and psychological pain. Correlation and mediation analyses were conducted using SPSS 29.0 and Mplus 8.3. Results (1) The stress mindset was significantly negatively correlated with psychological pain among medical students. (2) Cognitive reappraisal mediated the relationship between the stress mindset and psychological pain. (3) Self-identity mediated the relationship between the stress mindset and psychological pain. (4) Cognitive reappraisal and self-identity jointly mediated the relationship between the stress mindset and psychological pain. Conclusion The results of this study deepen the understanding of the psychological processes linking stress mindset and psychological pain and provide a valuable reference for reducing psychological pain and improving the well-being of medical students.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Liver-qi stagnation-type depression, marked by irritability and emotional imbalance, often responds inadequately to medication alone. This study explored the efficacy of combining acupuncture at the 13 ghost points with cognitive therapy for this condition. Conducted at our hospital from January 2022 to January 2023, the study involved 76 patients with liver-qi stagnation-type depression, divided into an observation group (acupuncture + cognitive therapy) and a control group (fluoxetine tablets), with 38 patients in each group. We assessed clinical efficacy, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) scores, Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome scores, liver-qi stagnation syndrome main symptom scores, and serum levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (HT), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) before and after treatment. The observation group achieved a total effective rate of 81.58%, significantly higher than the control group ( P < 0.05). Both groups showed significant reductions in HAMD and SDS scores, TCM syndrome scores, and liver-qi stagnation syndrome principal symptom scores posttreatment, with the observation group demonstrating superior improvements ( P < 0.05). Serum levels of 5-HT, VIP, and CREB also increased significantly in both groups, with greater changes in the observation group ( P < 0.05). The results suggest that the combination of acupuncture and cognitive therapy is more effective than fluoxetine alone in treating liver-qi stagnation-type depression, improving both clinical symptoms and physiological indicators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A common definition of "subthreshold" is that the diagnostic threshold is not met but the individuals are not asymptomatic. Some symptoms are present, causing significant difficulty in functioning and negatively impacting quality of life. Despite the attention given to subthreshold symptoms and the interventions for subthreshold symptoms being efficient in preventing the transition to psychiatric disease in primary care, reports on specific interventions are insufficient. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) for subthreshold depression (SD), subthreshold insomnia (SI), and subthreshold panic (SP). Additionally, this study aimed to explore the minimally important change (MIC) of each subthreshold group's effectiveness outcome. METHODS Participants aged 18-70 years from internet research monitors were categorized into SD, SI, and SP groups based on screening assessment. They were randomly assigned to intervention or control groups within each subthreshold symptom. The intervention groups worked on 4 weeks of nonguided ICBT ("Mentre"), while the control groups worked on a sham app. The primary outcome was the score change from screening (T1) to 4-week follow-up (T4) using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD) in the SD group, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in the SI group, and the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS) in the SP group. Secondary outcomes were score changes in the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), the CESD, the PSQI, and the PAS, except the primary outcome in each group. Secondary outcomes were analyzed using complete-case analysis and repeated-measures ANOVA. Additionally, the MIC in the primary endpoint for each group was also calculated as an exploratory outcome. RESULTS The SD, SP, and SI groups contained 846, 597, and 1106 participants, respectively. In the SD group, the difference in the CESD score change from baseline to follow-up between the intervention and control groups was significant (difference=0.52, 95% CI 1.29-4.66, P<.001). In the SI group, the difference in the PSQI score change was also significant (difference=0.53, 95% CI 0.11-0.94, P=.01). However, in the SP group, the difference in the PAS score change was not significant (difference=0.07, 95% CI -2.00 to 2.15, P=.94). CONCLUSIONS Our ICBT program Mentre contributes to the improvement of SI and SD. This suggests that nonguided ICBT may be effective in preventing SI and SD from progressing to the full threshold. However, appropriate definitions of subthreshold symptoms are necessary. In particular, it is difficult to define SP, and further research that considers the specific factors of each subthreshold symptom is necessary to accumulate evidence. Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption to health services. It is unclear if there were inequalities in the continuity of mental health care in the years around the COVID-19 pandemic. We used electronic health records (EHR) to detect mental health care gaps of more than six months in psychiatric appointments across demographic and socioeconomic characteristics among patients with depression. The analysis included patients with depression who were seen at one of two mental health clinics every year of 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022 (n = 783 patients). First, we found that the odds of mental health care gaps significantly decreased in the post-pandemic period (2021-2022) relative to the pre-pandemic period (2018-2019). Second, in the pre-pandemic period, patients who lived in areas in the highest tertile of deprivation had greater odds of gaps in mental health care relative to those in the lowest tertile (aOR: 2.18 [95 % CI: 1.02, 4.68]). Males had higher odds of gaps in care than females in the post-pandemic period (aOR: 2.22 [1.13, 4.37]) and the pooled pre- and post-pandemic study period (aOR: 1.58 [1.04, 2.40]). Third, interactions between patient characteristics and time were not significant, suggesting that the change in the odds of gaps of mental health care before relative to after the COVID-19 pandemic did not differ significantly based on patient characteristics. Overall, gaps in care decreased in the post-pandemic period relative to the pre-pandemic period among almost all patient groups.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a significant traumatic experience that often leads to chronic stress and mental health challenges. Research has consistently shown that physical activity-especially exercise-can alleviate depressive symptoms; however, the specific biological mechanisms underlying these antidepressant effects remain unclear. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the biological mechanisms of depression and the antidepressant mechanisms of physical activity and explore the biological processes through which exercise exerts its antidepressant effects in breast cancer patients. We focus on the impact of physical activity on inflammation, the endocrine system, glutamate, and other aspects, all of which play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of depression. Moreover, we discuss the heterogeneity of depression in breast cancer patients and the complex interactions between its underlying mechanisms. Additionally, we propose that a deeper understanding of these mechanisms in the breast cancer population can guide the design and implementation of exercise-based interventions that maximize the antidepressant benefits of physical activity. Finally, we summarize the current research and propose future research directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current evidence is insufficient to support specific tools for screening Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Early detection of subthreshold depression (SD) is crucial in preventing its progression to MDD. This study aims to develop nomograms that visualize the weights of predictors to improve the performance of screening tools. METHODS Participants were recruited from Peking University Sixth Hospital and Beijing Physical Examination Center between October 2022 and April 2024. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) 5.0.0 was employed as the diagnostic gold standard, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were employed to assess anxiety, depression, and sleep state. The nomograms were constructed by incorporating optimal predictors, selected through the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), into a multivariate logistic regression model to estimate the probability of MDD and SD. RESULTS After matching age and education, 164 participants were included in each group for analysis. Both nomograms demonstrated superior discrimination, calibration, and clinical applicability compared to PHQ-9. Anxiety emerged as a most significant predictor for SD, while sleep problems exhibited high rankings for both SD and MDD. The two predictors subsequently affect concentration and daytime functioning. LIMITATIONS With a lack of external validation data, the performance of nomograms may be overestimated. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first attempt to develop a nomogram for predicting SD, while also providing a nomogram for MDD. The crucial predictors offer valuable insights into potential variables for clinical intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previously, a chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model has been widely-adopted for assessing depressive-like behaviors in animals. However, there is still room for improvement in the CSDS model to safeguard study accuracy and the welfare of lab rodents. Our study team developed a novel, standardized apparatus to induce CSDS in rodents and assessed the model's practical adaptability. METHODS An innovative CSDS cage apparatus and water bottle was designed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the newly developed tools, a variety of animal models, including the tail suspension test (TST), sucrose preference test, forced swimming test (FST), novelty-suppressed feeding test, female urine sniffing test, and open field test (OFT), were adopted to assess depressive-like behaviors in mice. Fluoxetine treatment was also administered to observe the reversal effect, as part of the validation. RESULTS The CSDS cage apparatus resulted in the manifestation of depressive-like behaviors in the model mice. Significant reductions in sucrose preference and urine sniffing time were observed, while the OFT revealed decreased central zone total distance, residence time, and frequency of entry. Moreover, increased immobility was found in the FST and TST. Fluoxetine treatment was found to successfully reverse the modeling effect. CONCLUSION The CSDS cage apparatus was validated for enhanced usability and addressed the previous challenges of water bottle leakage and lab rodent welfare issues. The consistent results from multiple behavioral tests also supported real-world application of the apparatus, offering researchers a promising alternative to conventional rodent cages.

Abstract
Given the high prevalence of overweight and obesity and high comorbidity of depressive symptoms, there is a need for low-threshold, accessible care approaches for people with overweight/obesity aimed at improving mental health. Internet and mobile-based interventions (IMI) represent an innovative complementary treatment option. This review systematically searches for IMI aimed at improving mental health in people with overweight/obesity. We conducted a systematic literature search according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) criteria in the databases MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of IMI for adults with overweight/obesity and comorbid depressive symptoms aiming at improving mental health were screened and extracted. Study quality was assessed with RoB 2 (revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool in RCTs). After excluding duplicates, n = 790 results were included in title and abstract screening. After full-text-screening of n = 26 studies, n = 3 RCT studies were included. All interventions aimed to reduce both weight and depressive symptoms. In two RCTs, a significant reduction in both depressive symptoms and weight was achieved. One RCT indicated a significant reduction in depressive symptoms, but not in weight. Two intervention had a duration of 6 months and were guided by health carers, the third takes 3 months and can be used without professional guidance. There is evidence that IMI are effective in improving mental health for people with overweight/obesity and comorbid depressive symptoms. However, currently there are few interventions aiming at reducing depressive symptoms, all targeting English-speaking people. As IMI for depressive symptoms can be easily integrated in the somatic therapy of obesity as additional option and has high public health potential, target group-adapted and low-threshold accessible interventions in different languages should be developed and implemented for improving mental health in people with overweight/obesity. Abstract
Background Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is occurring at a progressively younger age, and suicide is now the second leading cause of death among adolescents with MDD. Studies have shown that structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) can improve the positioning accuracy and anti-depressant effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), thereby reducing suicidal ideation. Objective To compare the efficacy of sMRI-guided rTMS combined with pharmacotherapy, surface 5-cm rTMS positioning combined with pharmacotherapy, and pharmacotherapy alone on reducing depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation (SI) in MDD adolescents. Methods This was an open-label study of adjustable-dose pharmacotherapy combined with rTMS for the treatment of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in MDD adolescents. The three study groups were as follows: sMRI navigation for individualized rTMS coordinates targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and in combination with pharmacotherapy for 10 rTMS sessions over two weeks; surface 5-cm positioning for DLPFC in combination with pharmacotherapy for 10 rTMS sessions over two weeks; pharmacotherapy. All patients received only one type of SSRIs anti-depressant. A total of 123 Chinese adolescents aged 13-18 with MDD were enrolled, and psychological parameters were evaluated in the first and second weeks of treatment. Results Following treatment, the clinical symptoms improved in all three groups. The sMRI navigation group exhibited significantly more improvement in depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, without severe adverse reactions. Conclusion Ten sessions of rTMS treatment are feasible and effective in improving depressive symptoms and reducing SI in MDD adolescents. The combination of sMRI navigation rTMS and pharmacotherapy was found to yield the best outcomes. Clinical trial registration https://www.medicalresearch.org.cn/index, identifier MR-33-24-030536.

Abstract
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a common gynecological endocrine disease, which seriously affects women's physical and mental health and fertility, and its incidence is increasing year by year. With the development of social economy and technology, psychological stressors such as anxiety and depression caused by social, life and environmental factors may be one of the risk factors for POI. We used PubMed to search peer-reviewed original English manuscripts published over the last 10 years to identify established and experimental studies on the relationship between various types of stress and decreased ovarian function. Oxidative stress, follicular atresia, and excessive activation of oocytes, caused by Stress-associated factors may be the main causes of ovarian function damage. This article reviews the relationship between psychological stressors and hypoovarian function and the possible early intervention measures in order to provide new ideas for future clinical treatment and intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of subthreshold depression (StD) in older adults shows considerable variation across studies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of subthreshold depression in elderly people. METHODS We conducted a thorough literature search across multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, Wan Fang Data, CNKI, and VIP. Statistical analyses were carried out using STATA version 16.0. Our study was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023494210). RESULTS Seventy-seven studies involving 225,232 individuals were included in this meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of subthreshold depression was 18.6 % (95 % CI: 16.0 %-21.2 %, I2 =99.8 %, p<0.001. Subgroup analyses showed the prevalence of StD in older adults varied depending on the screening tools used and the continent of the study. Funnel plots and Egger's test did not reveal any significant publication bias (Egger's test: p = 0.057). CONCLUSION The prevalence of subthreshold depression in older adults is high, suggesting attention needs to be paid to the mental health of the elderly. To prevent a larger public health issue, it is imperative to implement timely and effective preventive measures and interventions, focusing on early detection and intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a very common disorder and comorbidity. Primary care providers are the first medical contacts to diagnose and treat depression. Video calls are emerging communication tools to deliver psychological interventions. AIMS To examine the effectiveness of videocall delivered psychological interventions to treat depressive symptoms in adult patients in primary care, as well as a systematic assessment of implementation factors. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed Central, Embase, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library and the WHO COVID-19 database and included randomized controlled trials only. Two authors screened the studies and assessed the risk of bias independently (Cochrane RoB tool). We followed the PRISMA guidelines. The study protocol was published in PROSPERO (CRD42022295238). The results were synthesized narratively. RESULTS Of 6.971 identified studies, we included six publications. Studies powered to detect clinically significant changes in primary outcomes, identified video calls to be effective for delivering complex psychological interventions in an integrated primary care setting. CONCLUSION Further research is needed to consolidate the findings on a larger scale and evaluate the effectiveness in comparison with alternatives such as telephone-delivered care. Results are promising and indicate the need for replication in larger studies as well as different health care settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To analyze the cytokine profile in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), as well as mood, anxiety, and cognition profiles in patients with CC. METHODS One hundred and nine individuals were evaluated, 37 controls, 18 CWC, and 54 CC patients. Assessments included BDI, HADS, Digit Span, FAS-verbal, Animals/WMS-R, Matrix Reasoning and Vocabulary (WASI), and QLQ-C30. RESULTS The CC group exhibited 62.96% depression and probable anxiety/depression, with 75.92% showing attention deficits. The CC and CWC groups demonstrated significant cognitive impairment on the WASI-Vocabulary test (CWC: 13.4 ± 2.2; CC: 15.9 ± 1.1) compared to the control group (Ct: 22.8 ± 1.6; p = 0.0002). In the QLQ-C30 scores, the CC group reported a greater perceived loss of quality of life and health deterioration (score of 17.5 ± 2.6) and lower scores on the Functional Scale (49.8 ± 4.5). The CC group had 18.52% illiteracy, 18.52% incomplete higher education, and 22.22% complete elementary education. The CC group also had lower weight (Ct: 67.8 ± 1.4; CWC: 61.7 ± 3.1; CC: 59.6 ± 1.7; p = 0.0023) and BMI (CC: 21.5 [18.3; 24.8]; Ct: 24.9 [23; 25.8]; p = 0.0021) compared to controls. Cytokines detected in the CSF were MCP-1, VEGF, IL-8, IP-10, and MIP-1β. Higher concentrations of MCP-1 were found in cancer patients (CSC: 571.2 ± 105.8; CC: 399.5 ± 65.9; Ct: 1477 ± 0.1; p < 0.0001), along with lower levels of MIP-1β (CC: 4345 [3060; 7353]) and VEGF (CC: 48.3 ± 2.0; CWC: 49.8 ± 3.8; Ct: 64.8 ± 3.2; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS The level of mental impairment (mood, anxiety, and cognitive deficits) correlated with cancer-associated and cachexia-associated inflammation, weight loss, low BMI, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), leukocytosis, lymphopenia, anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and low scores on the QLQ-C30 questionnaire (Global Health Status, Functional Scale, Symptom Scale). The CC group exhibited a higher prevalence of depression/anxiety, a stronger correlation between depression and inflammation, and greater cognitive impairment in attention, reasoning, and language, alongside lower average educational attainment. The low concentration of certain cytokines in the CSF combined with elevated systemic CRP in cancer and cachexia, associated with mental disorders, presents a paradox that requires further investigation. Higher concentrations of the cytokine MCP-1 in cancer patient groups indicated a positive correlation with the preservation of language abilities in these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a heterogeneous disorder with high morbidity and disability rates that poses serious problems regarding mental health care. It is now well established that N-methyl D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) modulators are being increasingly explored as potential therapeutic options for treating depression, although relatively little is known about their mechanisms of action. NMDARs are glutamate-gated ion channels that are ubiquitously expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), and they have been shown to play key roles in excitatory synaptic transmission. GluN2A, the predominant Glu2N subunit of functional NMDARs in neurons, is involved in various physiological processes in the CNS and is associated with diseases such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. However, the role of GluN2A in the pathophysiology of depression has not yet been elucidated. METHODS We reviewed several past studies to better understand the function of GluN2A in depression. Additionally, we also summarized the pathogenesis of depression based on the regulation of GluN2A expression, particularly its interaction with neuroinflammation and neurogenesis, which has received considerable critical attention and is highly implicated in the onset of depression. RESULTS These evidence suggests that GluN2A overexpression impairs structural and functional synaptic plasticity, which contributes to the development of depression. Consequently, this knowledge is vital for the development of selective antagonists targeting GluN2A subunits using pharmacological and molecular methods. CONCLUSIONS Specific inhibition of the GluN2A NMDAR subunit is resistant to chronic stress-induced depressive-like behaviors, making them promising targets for the development of novel antidepressants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Postpartum depression is one of the most common complications after childbearing. Urinary incontinence is a frequent symptom during pregnancy and the postnatal period, often being the first time that women experience it. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the evidence on the association between urinary incontinence and postpartum depression and to assess whether this association becomes weaker at 6 months after childbirth. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to December 26, 2023. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Cross-sectional and cohort studies addressing the association between urinary incontinence and postpartum depression were included. METHODS Pooled odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals, and 95% prediction intervals were estimated using a DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model for the association between urinary incontinence and postpartum depression. Subgroup analyses were conducted on the basis of time after delivery (<6 or ≥6 months). The risk of bias was assessed with the National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort Studies. RESULTS Eleven published studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Overall, the odds ratio for the association between urinary incontinence and postpartum depression was 1.45 (95% confidence interval, 1.11-1.79; 95% prediction interval, 0.49-2.40; I2=65.9%; P=.001). For the 7 cohort studies, the odds ratio was 1.63 (95% confidence interval, 1.35-1.91; 95% prediction interval, 1.14-2.13; I2=11.1%; P=.345). For the 4 cross-sectional studies, the odds ratio was 1.05 (95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.05; 95% prediction interval, 1.04-1.06; I2=0.0%; P=.413). According to the time after delivery, the odds ratio estimates for cohort studies with a postpartum period <6 months were 1.44 (95% confidence interval, 1.07-1.81; prediction interval, 0.63-2.25; I2=0.0%; P=.603) and 1.53 (95% confidence interval, 1.16-1.89; prediction interval, 0.41-2.65; I2=50.7%; P=.087) for those with a postpartum period ≥6 months. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that urinary incontinence may be a potential predictor of postpartum depression. Thus, it is important that health care professionals offer support and treatment options to women who experience these conditions.

Abstract
Background Trauma is commonly understood as a psychological and emotional response to distressing events. The subjective nature of trauma experiences has led to ongoing debates about the best theoretical frameworks for understanding and addressing trauma. This review aims to comprehensively critique traditional biomedical and psychological models and advocates for more inclusive and culturally sensitive frameworks. Methods A narrative literature review was conducted, synthesizing data from 96 peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and authoritative reports from databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. The review focused on studies related to trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, and related disorders, emphasizing both individual and socio-cultural aspects. Results The review identifies several key criticisms of trauma models. For biological models, critiques include the oversimplification of trauma experiences, insufficient developmental considerations, failure to capture diverse trauma responses, limited cultural sensitivity, and inadequacy of the categorical approach. For psychological models, criticisms encompass an overemphasis on internal processes, neglect of developmental impacts, limited focus on symptom diversity, challenges in addressing socio-cultural contexts, and incomplete integration of emotional and relational aspects. These findings underscore the need for more comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and developmentally informed trauma frameworks. Conclusion The findings emphasize the importance of adopting a holistic perspective in trauma research and treatment. By integrating individual, interpersonal, and socio-cultural dimensions, future research and interventions can better support trauma survivors. This approach necessitates ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration and the inclusion of diverse voices, including those of trauma survivors, to refine current methodologies and enhance therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated if changes in leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-cn), 2 markers of cellular aging, are associated with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and with response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). METHODS LTL and mtDNA-cn were measured in 31 TRD patients before (T0), 1 week (T1), and 4 weeks (T2) after the ECT course, as well as in a sample of 65 healthy controls. RESULTS TRD patients had significantly shorter LTL and higher mtDNA-cn compared with healthy controls at baseline. In the TRD sample, LTL was inversely correlated with Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale scores at baseline. Baseline levels of LTL or mtDNA-cn were not correlated with response to ECT. Similarly, changes in LTL or mtDNA-cn were not associated with response to ECT either when considered as a dichotomous trait (responders vs nonresponders) or as a percentage change in symptoms improvements. CONCLUSIONS Ours is the first longitudinal study exploring the role of LTL and mtDNA-cn in response to ECT. Findings of this pilot investigation suggest that LTL and mtDNA-cn may constitute disease biomarkers for TRD but are not involved in response to ECT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is not clear whether the amount and frequency of psychotherapy is associated with treatment effects for adult depression. We investigated whether a number of indicators of the amount and frequency of psychotherapy were related to the treatment effects in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing individual, face-to-face psychotherapy to a control group (e.g., care-as-usual [CAU] or waitlist condition [WL]). METHODS Four databases were systematically searched, and meta-regression analyses conducted to assess the relationship between the effect size (Hedges' g) of the treatment and number of sessions, duration of psychotherapy, total contact time with the therapist, and number of sessions per week. RESULTS We included 176 studies (210 comparisons) with 15,158 participants. We did not find a relationship between the effect size, and number of sessions, or total contact time. There was a small negative association between duration of treatment and the effect size, an additional week of treatment was related to a 0.014 decrease in the effect size. In addition, there was a strong association between number of sessions per week and the effect size, an increase from one to two sessions per week was related to an effect size higher by 0.596. Both associations were no longer significant when controlling for characteristics of studies. LIMITATIONS The current findings are correlational, future research should thus address this question in an RCT. CONCLUSIONS We should deliver brief therapies, and thus shorten waiting lists. More sessions, if necessary, should be delivered with higher frequency and over a shorter period of time.

Abstract
Objective Danzhixiaoyao pills (DXP) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula that has been effectively used in clinical practice to treat depression and metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), but its therapeutic mechanism is not yet clear. The purpose of this study is to explore the possible mechanisms of DXP in treating depression and MAFLD using network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques based on existing literature reports. Methods By combining TCMSP, Swiss ADME, Swiss TargetPrediction, and UniProt databases, the active ingredients and potential targets of DXP were screened and obtained. By searching for relevant disease targets through Gene Cards, OMIM, and TTD databases, intersection targets between drugs and diseases were obtained. The network of "Disease - Potential targets - Active ingredients - Traditional Chinese medicine - Prescriptions" was constructed using Cytoscape 3.9.1 software, and the PPI network was constructed using STRING 12.0 database. The core targets were obtained through topology analysis. GO function enrichment and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis were conducted based on DAVID. The above results were validated by molecular docking using PyMol 2.5 and AutoDock Tool 1.5.7 software, and their possible therapeutic mechanisms were discussed. Results Network pharmacology analysis obtained 130 main active ingredients of drugs, 173 intersection targets between drugs and diseases, and 37 core targets. Enrichment analysis obtained 1390 GO functional enrichment results, of which 922 were related to biological process, 107 were related to cellular component, 174 were related to molecular function, and obtained 180 KEGG pathways. Molecular docking has confirmed the good binding ability between relevant components and targets, and the literature discussion has preliminarily verified the above results. Conclusion DXP can act on targets such as TNF, AKT1, ALB, IL1B, TP53 through active ingredients such as kaempferol, quercetin, naringenin, isorhamnetin, glyuranolide, etc, and by regulating signaling pathways such as pathways in cancer, MAPK signaling pathway, lipid and atherosclerosis, to exert its effect of "homotherapy for heteropathy" on depression and MAFLD. In addition, glyuranolide showed the strongest affinity with TNF (-7.88 kcal/mol), suggesting that it may play a key role in the treatment process. The research results provide a theoretical basis for elucidating the scientific connotation and mechanism of action of traditional Chinese medicine compound DXP, and provide new directions for its clinical application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deep brain stimulation has shown promise in treating individual patients with treatment-resistant depression, but larger-scale trials have been less successful. Here, we created what is, to our knowledge, the largest meta-analysis with individual patient data to date to explore whether the use of tractography enhances the efficacy of deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression. METHODS We systematically reviewed 1823 articles, selecting 32 that contributed data from 366 patients. We stratified the individual patient data based on stimulation target and use of tractography. Using 2-way type III analysis of variance, Welch's 2-sample t tests, and mixed-effects linear regression models, we evaluated changes in depression severity 1 year (9-15 months) postoperatively and at last follow-up (4 weeks to 8 years) as assessed by depression scales. RESULTS Tractography was used for medial forebrain bundle (MFB) (n = 17 tractography/32 total), subcallosal cingulate (SCC) (n = 39 tractography/241 total), and ventral capsule/ventral striatum (n = 3 tractography/41 total) targets; it was not used for bed nucleus of stria terminalis (n = 11), lateral habenula (n = 10), and inferior thalamic peduncle (n = 1). Across all patients, tractography significantly improved mean depression scores at 1 year (p < .001) and last follow-up (p = .009). Within the target cohorts, tractography improved depression scores at 1 year for both MFB and SCC, though significance was met only at the α = 0.1 level (SCC: β = 15.8%, p = .09; MFB: β = 52.4%, p = .10). Within the tractography cohort, patients with MFB tractography showed greater improvement than patients with SCC tractography (72.42 ± 7.17% vs. 54.78 ± 4.08%) at 1 year (p = .044). CONCLUSIONS Our findings underscore the promise of tractography in deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression as a method for personalization of therapy, supporting its inclusion in future trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intervention for older patients with cardiac disease and subthreshold depression (StD) may be an effective strategy to prevent the development of major depressive disorder. The subliminal priming with supraliminal reward stimulation (SPSRS) website developed by us is an advanced intervention that can improve depressive symptoms in individuals with StD by presenting positive word stimuli in videos. However, its efficacy for treating depressive symptoms in older patients with cardiac disease and StD has not been investigated. Here, we present a pilot randomized controlled trial protocol to investigate the preliminary efficacy of an intervention for older patients with cardiac disease with StD. METHODS The study was designed as a single-center, open-label, pilot, randomized, parallel-group trial. The participants will include 30 older patients with cardiac disease and StD who are hospitalized in acute wards. The Experimental group received the SPSRS intervention (video viewing with positive word stimuli; n = 15) and the Control group will receive the YouTube intervention (video viewing without positive word stimuli; n = 15). In both groups, the intervention will be administered for 10 min per day, five times per week for 1 week. The primary outcome will be the change in the scores on the Japanese version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II at 1 week after the baseline assessment. The secondary outcomes will be the changes in the Specific Activity Scale, New York Heart Association functional classification, as well as grip strength at 1 week after the baseline assessment. DISCUSSION This pilot randomized controlled trial will be the first to evaluate the SPSRS intervention for depressive symptoms in older patients with cardiac disease and StD who are admitted to acute wards. The results will provide tentative indications regarding the impact of the intervention on depressive symptoms among older patients with cardiac disease and StD who are admitted to acute wards, and will contribute to the planning of a full-scale study. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and depression is controversial. This study combined observational research and Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the relationship of depression with both smoking status and cotinine levels. METHOD We collected relevant data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005 to 2018, and used weighted multifactorial logistic regression modelling to assess the correlation between TSE and depression, and assessed the causal relationship of depression with both smoking status and cotinine levels by MR. RESULT Current smokers had the highest risk of depression (OR 1.94; P < 0.01); there was a positive trend for correlation between daily smoking and depression (OR 1.66; P for trend < 0.01). Serum ketamine levels above 3.00 ng/ml had a higher risk of depression (OR 2.13; P < 0.001). MR results showed that current smoking (OR = 4.66; P < 0.001) and previous smoking (OR 2.09; P < 0.01) were risk factors for the onset of depression, and that there was no causal association between cotinine levels and depression. CONCLUSION Smoking is significantly associated with depression and plays a potential causal role in the development of depression. Cotinine was significantly associated with depression, however MR results showed no causal relationship between cotinine and depression.

Abstract
Central nervous system (CNS) disorders exhibit exceedingly intricate pathogenic mechanisms. Pragmatic and effective solutions remain elusive, significantly compromising human life and health. Activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) participates in the regulation of multiple pathophysiological processes, including CNS disorders. Considering the widespread involvement of ATF4 in the pathological process of CNS disorders, the targeted regulation of ATF4 by plant-derived bioactive compounds (PDBCs) may become a viable strategy for the treatment of CNS disorders. However, the regulatory relationship between PDBCs and ATF4 remains incompletely understood. Here, we aimed to comprehensively review the studies on PDBCs targeting ATF4 to ameliorate CNS disorders, thereby offering novel directions and insights for the treatment of CNS disorders. A computerized search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases to identify preclinical experiments related to PDBCs targeting ATF4 for the treatment of CNS disorders. The search timeframe was from the inception of the databases to December 2023. Two assessors conducted searches using the keywords "ATF4," "Central Nervous System," "Neurological," "Alzheimer's disease," "Parkinson's Disease," "Stroke," "Spinal Cord Injury," "Glioblastoma," "Traumatic Brain Injury," and "Spinal Cord Injury." Overall, 31 studies were included, encompassing assessments of 27 PDBCs. Combining results from in vivo and in vitro studies, we observed that these PDBCs, via ATF4 modulation, prevent the deposition of amyloid-like fibers such as Aβ, tau, and α-synuclein. They regulate ERS, reduce the release of inflammatory factors, restore mitochondrial membrane integrity to prevent oxidative stress, regulate synaptic plasticity, modulate autophagy, and engage anti-apoptotic mechanisms. Consequently, they exert neuroprotective effects in CNS disorders. Numerous PDBCs targeting ATF4 have shown potential in facilitating the restoration of CNS functionality, thereby presenting expansive prospects for the treatment of such disorders. However, future endeavors necessitate high-quality, large-scale, and comprehensive preclinical and clinical studies to further validate this therapeutic potential.

Abstract
Previous research has shown a decrease in serum testosterone levels in male patients with depression. In recent years, the results of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to improve depression have been mixed. Using the classic CUMS model, we induced depressive-like behaviors in rats and observed a decrease in their serum testosterone levels along with an increase in androgen receptor expression in the hippocampus. We then performed castration and sham surgery on male rats and found that testosterone deprivation led to the manifestation of depressive-like behavior that could be ameliorated by TRT. Through a repeated measures experiment consisting of five blocks over a period of 25 days, we discovered that the reduction in depressive-like behavior in testosterone-deprived rats began 22 days after drug administration (0.5 and 0.25 mg/rat). Furthermore, rats in 0.5mgT group showed the most significant improvements. Subsequently, this dose was used in CUMS rats and reduced the occurrence of depressive-like behaviors. Our study has demonstrated the complex interplay between depression and testosterone, as well as the intricate dose-response relationship between TRT and reduction in depression. Our research supports the use of TRT to alleviate depression, but dosage and duration of treatment are critical factors in determining efficacy.

Abstract
Background Despite the availability of effective antidepressant strategies, numerous people with depressive disorders remain untreated. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected healthcare services, especially the mental health sector. This study aims to explore the coverage of depression treatments in the general Spanish population and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods We used longitudinal data (2018 and 2022) from the general Spanish population: pre-pandemic n = 1512; mean age = 65.43 years ± 14.90; 56 % females; post-pandemic n = 909; mean age = 68.00 years ± 14.24; 54 % women. The International Classification of Disease 10th edition was used to diagnose lifetime depressive episodes and severity. We explored psychological and pharmacological treatment coverage via multiple logistic regressions adjusted for 4 covariates (sex assigned at birth, education level, age, Covid-19 pandemic) for participants with a diagnosis of depression. Results Treatment coverage for depression in the pre-pandemic and post-pandemic samples was, respectively, 53.3 % and 51.9 %. We observed an association between severe depression and treatment coverage (OR = 2.77, 95%CI 1.05 to 7.75). We found no association between the COVID-19 pandemic and treatment coverage. Conclusions The pharmacological treatment coverage was associated with severe types of depression. The prevalence rates of treatment coverage were similar in the pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic attesting to the resilience of the mental health system in Spain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the effectiveness of psychological interventions among older adults with subthreshold depression in the community. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effectiveness of psychological interventions on depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and quality of life. METHODS We searched five databases from inception to 20th September 2022 and included RCTs that evaluated the effectiveness of psychological interventions among older adults with subthreshold depression in the community. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were used to calculate the effect sizes of treatment outcomes in the meta-analysis, using RevMan 5.4.1 and Stata 16.0. RESULTS This meta-analysis included thirteen RCT studies involving 2079 participants. Psychological interventions could significantly reduce depressive symptoms (post-intervention time: SMD = -0.58, 95 % CI = -0.76 to -0.40; follow-up time: SMD = -0.31, 95 % CI = -0.41 to -0.22) and anxiety symptoms (post-intervention time: SMD = -0.33, 95 % CI = -0.49 to -0.17; follow-up time: SMD = -0.24, 95 % CI = -0.36 to -0.12) and improve quality of life (post-intervention time: SMD = 0.30, 95 % CI = 0.05 to 0.55; follow-up time: SMD = 0.15, 95 % CI = 0.01 to 0.28). CONCLUSION Evidence suggests that psychological interventions could significantly reduce depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms, and improve quality of life among community-dwelling older adults with subthreshold depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and safety of different dosage regimens of zuranolone in the treatment of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library and other databases were searched from inception until July 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to the efficacy and safety of zuranolone in the treatment of MDD were included. The data were extracted independently by 2 investigators and assessed the study quality by the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. The primary outcome includes the 17-item HAMILTON total score (HAMD-17) and the incidence of adverse events (AEs). RESULTS Six high-quality RCTs with 1593 patients were finally included in our analysis. Zuranolone group achieve a notable treatment effect at day15 in HAMD-17 compared with placebo group (MD = -2.69, 95 % CI: -4.45 to -0.94, P < 0.05). For safety, no significant differences existed in the proportion of patients with AEs between zuranolone with placebo (RR = 1.25, 95 % CI: 0.99 to 1.58, P = 0.06). CONCLUSION Zuranolone has a significant efficacy in improving depressive symptoms in the short term and is positively correlated with the dosage administered. However, the efficacy of zuranolone decreased significantly when the time of administration was extended. Zuranolone demonstrated a controllable safety issue. But adverse effects increased as the dose of zuranolone was gradually increased to 50 mg.

Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common condition with complex psychological and biological background. While its aetiology is still unclear, chronic stress stands amongst major risk factors to MDD pathogenesis. When researching on MDD, it is necessary to be familiar with the neurobiological effects of several prominent contributors to the chronic stress factor experienced across hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, neurotransmission, immune system reflexivity, and genetic alterations. Bi-directional flow of MDD pathogenesis suggests that psychological factors produce biological effects. Here, a summary of how the MDD expresses its mechanisms of action across an overactive HPA axis, the negative impacts of reduced neurotransmitter functions, the inflammatory responses and their gene x environment interactions. This paper builds on these conceptual factors and their input towards the MDD symptomatology with a purpose of synthesising the current findings and create an integrated view of the MDD pathogenesis. Finally, relevant treatment implications will be summarised, along with recommendations to a multimodal clinical practice.

Abstract
Transdiagnostic group cognitive behavioural therapy (TD-GCBT) is more effective in improving symptoms and severity of emotional disorders (EDs) than treatment as usual (TAU; usually pharmacological treatment). However, there is little research that has examined the effects of these treatments on specific symptoms. This study used Network Intervention Analysis (NIA) to investigate the direct and differential effects of TD-GCBT + TAU and TAU on specific symptoms of anxiety and depression. Data are from a multicentre randomised clinical trial (N = 1061) comparing TD-GCBT + TAU versus TAU alone for EDs. The networks included items from the PHQ-9 (depression) and GAD-7 (anxiety) questionnaire and mixed graphical models were estimated at pre-treatment, post-treatment and 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results revealed that TD-GCBT + TAU was associated with direct effects, mainly on several anxiety symptoms and depressed mood after treatment. New direct effects on other depressive symptoms emerged during the follow-up period promoted by TD-GCBT compared to TAU. Our results suggest that the improvement of anxiety symptoms after treatment might precipitate a wave of changes that favour a decrease in depressive symptomatology. NIA is a methodology that can provide fine-grained insight into the likely pathways through which treatments exert their effects.

Abstract
Scalable, transdiagnostic interventions are needed to meet the needs of a growing population of older adults experiencing multimorbidity and functional decline. Behavioral activation (BA) is a pragmatic, empirically supported treatment for depression that focuses on increasing engagement in values-aligned activities. We propose BA is an ideal transdiagnostic intervention approach for older adults because it (a) specifically targets activity restriction, a shared characteristic of common conditions of aging; and (b) has strong potential for scalability through delivery by a broad range of clinician and nonclinician interventionists and via telehealth. We describe the history of BA and review recent literature demonstrating impacts beyond depression including on cognition, social isolation, and disability. We also describe the feasibility of delivering BA across interventionists, settings, and modalities. Our approach advances scholarship by proposing BA as a scalable, transdiagnostic behavioral intervention to address functional decline in older adults with common geriatric conditions.

Abstract
Depression negatively impacts mood, behavior, and mental and physical health. It is the third leading cause of suicides worldwide and leads to decreased quality of life. We examined 18 genes available at the genetic testing registry (GTR) from the National Center for Biotechnological Information to investigate molecular patterns present in depression-associated genes. Different genotypes and differential expression of the genes are responsible for ensuing depression. The present study, investigated codon pattern analysis, which might play imperative roles in modulating gene expression of depression-associated genes. Of the 18 genes, seven and two genes tended to up- and down-regulate, respectively, and, for the remaining genes, different genotypes, an outcome of SNPs were responsible alone or in combination with differential expression for different conditions associated with depression. Codon context analysis revealed the abundance of identical GTG-GTG and CTG-CTG pairs, and the rarity of methionine-initiated codon pairs. Information based on codon usage, preferred codons, rare, and codon context might be used in constructing a deliverable synthetic construct to correct the gene expression level of the human body, which is altered in the depressive state. Other molecular signatures also revealed the role of evolutionary forces in shaping codon usage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression is a common mental illness. Neural stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (NSC-EVs) are involved in repairing neuronal injury. We estimated the mechanism of miR-16-5p in depression rats. METHODS EVs were extracted from NSCs. The depression rat model was established by corticosterone (CORT) induction and treated with NSC-EVs. The depression behavioral/pathological changes in rats were assessed using forced swimming test, open field test, sucrose consumption test and western blotting. The neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal tissue were detected. CORT-induced PC12 cell model was established. EV uptake by PC12 cells was measured and PC12 cell apoptosis was detected. The downstream targets of miR-16-5p were predicted and verified. The expressions of miR-16-5p and MYB in rats, PC12 cells, and EVs were measured. Functional rescue experiments were conducted to verify the role of miR-16-5p and MYB in PC12 cell apoptosis. RESULTS CORT induction increased neuronal apoptosis in hippocampal tissue and induced depression-like behaviors in rats, while NSC-EV treatment improved depression-like behaviors and apoptosis in rats. In PC12 cells, NSC-EVs decreased CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. NSC-EVs carried miR-16-5p into PC12 cells. miR-16-5p knockdown in EVs partially reversed the inhibitory effects of NSC-EVs on CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. miR-16-5p targeted to inhibit MYB to repress CORT-induced PC12 cell apoptosis. In vivo experiments further verified that NSC-EVs reduced neuronal injury in CORT-induced depression rats via the miR-16-5p/MYB axis. CONCLUSION NSC-EVs-mediated alleviation on neuronal injury by carrying miR-16-5p to target MYB was highly likely one of the mechanisms by which NSC-EVs mediated miR-16-5p in neuroprotection of depression rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent significant components of environmental pollution, typically occurring as mixtures, raising concerns about their potential impact on human health. However, the combined effect of HMs and PAHs exposure on depression has not been explored. METHODS Leveraging National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data spanning 2005 to 2016, we employ survey-weighted multiple logistic regression models to probe the interrelation between HMs, PAHs, and depression. This exploration is complemented by age and gender-stratified analyses, as well as a determination of the dose-response linkage via restricted cubic spline regression. Furthermore, the combined impact of HMs and PAHs on depression was evaluated through a range of statistical methodologies. RESULTS The study encompasses 7732 adults. Our findings unveil notable associations, indicating the significant influence of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and all six PAHs metabolites on depression. Moreover, mixed exposure to HMs and PAHs emerges as a substantial contributor to an augmented depression risk, with Cd, Pb, 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-NAP), 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-FLU), and 1-hydroxypyrene (1-PYR) likely driving this positive relationship. Intriguingly, subgroup analyses highlight greater prominence of these connections among individuals aged 20-59 and among women. Furthermore, the results tentatively suggest a potential interplay between Cd and 2-NAP in relation to depression. CONCLUSION This study posits that exposure to both individual and combined HMs and PAHs may be associated with an elevated risk of depression. Further prospective investigations are warranted to substantiate these findings.

Abstract
Corynoxeine, a natural active alkaloid found in Genus Uncaria, has been reported to have anti-depressant effects. In this study, a sensitive and efficient ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method for quantifying corynoxeine in rat plasma and tissues was established, validated and applied to investigate the pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution differences between normal rats and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression model rats following oral administration. All bio-samples were prepared by methanol protein precipitation method with theophylline as internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation was conducted on an Agilent ZORBAX Eclipse Plus C18 column using mobile phase A (acetonitrile) and B (0.1% formic acid in water) in gradient elution mode with a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Mass spectrometric detection was performed in multiple-reaction monitoring mode with positive electrospray ionization source. The transitions of m/z 383.0→160.2 for corynoxeine and m/z 181.1→124.0 for IS were chosen for quantification. The method showed good linearity, stability, accuracy, precision, recovery, and non-significant matrix effect, which were within the acceptable ranges. The pharmacokinetic results revealed that the absorption and bioavailability of corynoxeine in depression rats decreased compared to normal rats. The tissue distribution of corynoxeine trended to be mostly in the intestine and stomach and the distribution of this compound in intestine tissue of depression rats was significantly increased compared to the normal rats. The pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution profiles of corynoxeine were altered in CUMS-induced depression rats compared to normal rats and these experimental findings could provide beneficial information to the mechanism research and clinical applications of corynoxeine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly permeated various sectors, including healthcare, highlighting its potential to facilitate mental health assessments. This study explores the underexplored domain of AI's role in evaluating prognosis and long-term outcomes in depressive disorders, offering insights into how AI large language models (LLMs) compare with human perspectives. METHODS Using case vignettes, we conducted a comparative analysis involving different LLMs (ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, Claude and Bard), mental health professionals (general practitioners, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and mental health nurses), and the general public that reported previously. We evaluate the LLMs ability to generate prognosis, anticipated outcomes with and without professional intervention, and envisioned long-term positive and negative consequences for individuals with depression. RESULTS In most of the examined cases, the four LLMs consistently identified depression as the primary diagnosis and recommended a combined treatment of psychotherapy and antidepressant medication. ChatGPT-3.5 exhibited a significantly pessimistic prognosis distinct from other LLMs, professionals and the public. ChatGPT-4, Claude and Bard aligned closely with mental health professionals and the general public perspectives, all of whom anticipated no improvement or worsening without professional help. Regarding long-term outcomes, ChatGPT 3.5, Claude and Bard consistently projected significantly fewer negative long-term consequences of treatment than ChatGPT-4. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores the potential of AI to complement the expertise of mental health professionals and promote a collaborative paradigm in mental healthcare. The observation that three of the four LLMs closely mirrored the anticipations of mental health experts in scenarios involving treatment underscores the technology's prospective value in offering professional clinical forecasts. The pessimistic outlook presented by ChatGPT 3.5 is concerning, as it could potentially diminish patients' drive to initiate or continue depression therapy. In summary, although LLMs show potential in enhancing healthcare services, their utilisation requires thorough verification and a seamless integration with human judgement and skills.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kaixinsan (KXS) decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formulation commonly used to treat depression. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of KXS, which is widely used, alone and in combination with other therapies, for the treatment of depression. The main objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of KXS in the treatment of depression as a single agent or in combination with other methods. METHODS Randomized controlled trials of KXS in the treatment of depression were systematically searched from several Chinese and English databases with no language restriction. Patients in these studies met the relevant diagnostic criteria for depression. Data on HAMD, SDS, practical situations, and occurrence of side effects in the studies were extracted. Finally, the methodological quality and risk of bias of the included studies were assessed using the Jadad scale and Cochrane bias evaluation tool. RESULTS Twelve studies with 1034 patients were included after screening. The Jadad scale and Cochrane bias evaluation tool indicated that the quality of the studies ranged from fair to good, with 41.7% categorized as good and 58.3% as poor. Egger test and funnel plots showed that the publication bias remain low. CONCLUSION The results showed that the frequency of side effects in the control group was higher than that in the treatment group, and there was a statistically significant difference. KXS was comparable or superior to antidepressants in treating depression and has fewer side effects. The data analysis showed that effectiveness and other indicators differed significantly by geographic area and dosage form, which has implications for future clinical work.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) are progressive morbidities that represent a serious health issue in the aging world population. There is a contemporary upsurge in worldwide interest in the area of traditional remedies and phytomedicines are widely accepted by researchers due to their health-promoted effects and fewer side effects. Hesperidin, a flavanone glycoside present in the peels of citrus fruits, possesses various biological activities including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. In various preclinical studies, hesperidin has provided significant protective actions in a variety of brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, depression, neuropathic pain, etc. as well as their underlying mechanisms. The findings indicate that the neuroprotective effects of hesperidin are mediated by modulating antioxidant defence activities and neural growth factors, diminishing apoptotic and neuro-inflammatory pathways. This review focuses on the potential role of hesperidin in managing and treating diverse brain disorders.

Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder and more women are affected by depression than men. In this study, we aimed to analyze the trends in the incidence of depression among women from 1990 to 2019 and their associations with sociodemographic and universal health coverage indices based on data from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019. It was observed that while the incidence rate of depression among women decreased by an average of 0.35% per year at the global level, the incidence rate increased at the regional level for the high sociodemographic index region by an average of 0.39% per year from 1990 to 2019. And the global downward trend in incidence rate from 1990 to 2019 was contributed by the downward trend from 2000 to 2009. In Spearman correlation analyzes at the level of country/territory, a negative correlation between the estimated annual percentage change in the incidence rate and the universal health coverage index was found (ρ=-0.15).

Abstract
Understanding mental healthcare seeking and associated factors is essential for planning mental health services. This study aimed to assess treatment seeking and barriers to care for depressive symptoms and hazardous drinking in a community sample of Northwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted to screen 1,728 participants for depressive symptoms (n = 414) and hazardous drinking (n = 155). Participants were asked whether they had sought mental healthcare. We also assessed the barriers to seeking mental healthcare. Logistic regression was used to identify associated factors. Among people with depressive symptoms, 14.3%, 15.5%, and 19.6% sought treatment from healthcare settings, non-healthcare settings, or any sources, respectively. Religious places (39.5%) were the most helpful treatment sources. People with low levels of internalized stigma (adj OR = 3.00 [1.41, 6.42]) and positive attitudes towards mental illness (adj OR = 2.84 [1.33, 6.07]) were nearly threefold more likely to seek depression treatment. No participants with hazardous drinking sought treatment from healthcare settings, and only 1.3% had sought help from families/friends. Over 97% of participants with depressive symptoms and hazardous drinking reported at least one barrier to treatment-seeking from a healthcare setting. Religious and traditional healers were as important as healthcare settings for treatment-seeking.

Abstract
Evidences showed the link between allergy and depression, while the relationships of depression with allergy-related outcomes is insufficient. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the relationship of depression with allergy-related outcomes assessed using two different outcome indicators, in a population-based study. A cross-sectional study was performed of 1094 participants in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The self-reported allergic symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR) status and immunoglobulin E (IgE) were used to evaluate the allergy-related outcomes. The depression disorder was defined as the ≥ 10 points on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Logistic and linear regression models were performed to illustrate the associations of depression and allergy-related outcomes. The prevalence of AR and depression was 34.2% and 6.8%, respectively. The odds of depression were 8.6% higher in participants with AR patients compared those without AR [odds ratio (OR) = 1.739, 95% confidence interval (CI): (1.034, 2.933)], while the odds of depression in participants with allergic sensitization and without allergic sensitization were not found significant difference. Allergy is positively associated with depression disorder, and patients with allergy-related outcomes, such as AR, may be at higher risk of depression, while the IgE level was not founded to be related with depression. In the treatment of AR patients with depression symptoms, early detection and management of mental problems are of importance.
