In the field of healthcare, ensuring patient safety is a critical priority that has garnered global recognition as a pressing public health concern. Despite notable progress in medical treatments and diagnostic technologies, patients continue to be at risk of adverse events and harm during the perioperative period. Anesthetists hold a pivotal position in this phase of patient care and have the potential to greatly impact safety and outcomes. This research sought to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and influencing factors of anesthetists concerning patient safety in government referral hospitals situated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Between January and June 2021, a multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted in 13 governmental referral hospitals located in Addis Ababa. Data were collected using a standardized and pre-tested self-administered questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 24.0. The variables and their associated factors were examined for their association with logistic regression, and significance was determined at a P-value of less than 0.05. Of the anesthesia professionals surveyed, 238 (86.86%) completed the questionnaire. The study revealed that over half of the participants had good knowledge (56.7%) and a positive attitude (68.9%). Factors significantly associated with patient safety knowledge included having patient safety information during continuing education [AOR = 4.016; 95% CI: (1.99-8.07)] and having a working experience of more than 15 years [AOR = 3.9; 95% CI: (1.23-12.29)]. Additionally, those who received patient safety training [AOR =2.0; 95% CI: (1.2-3.64)] were more likely to have a positive attitude than those who did not receive such training. The study found that a majority of Ethiopian anesthetists hold a favorable view toward patient safety, with 56.7% demonstrating good patient safety knowledge and 68.9% exhibiting a favorable attitude toward patient safety. Work experience, continuous education, patient safety training, and strong knowledge were identified as crucial factors in ensuring patient safety.Therefore, it is recommended that anesthesia professionals participate in educational programs and receive training in patient safety to address these concerns.

Despite the implementation of intervention strategies, incidents in specialised care units remain high and are of serious concern, worldwide.

To assess the healthcare professionals' perception of knowledge and implementation of patient safety incident (PSI) reporting and learning guidelines in specialised care units of three selected public hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The study used a descriptive, cross-sectional survey design. A purposive sample targeted 237 healthcare professionals. An online structured questionnaire collected the data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse data.

A total of 181 questionnaires were returned, yielding a response rate of 76%. Notably, 83% of respondents had high-perceived knowledge of the PSI reporting and learning guidelines, while 98% had low perceptions of their implementation. The current unit (p=0.002) and shift of the day (p=0.008) were factors associated with the perception of good knowledge of PSI reporting and learning guidelines, as indicated by a p-value ≤0.05. The respondents' age (p=0.05), current unit (p=0.015), and shift of the day (p=0.000) were significantly associated with the perception of poor implementation of the PSI reporting and learning guidelines.

The respondents demonstrated a good perception of knowledge of PSI reporting and learning guidelines; however, the perception of the implementation was poor. Therefore, a revised implementation strategy coupled with periodical in-service training for healthcare professionals is recommended, to foster and facilitate effective adherence to PSI reporting and learning guidelines.

This study highlights the healthcare professionals' perception of knowledge and implementation of the Patient Safety Incident reporting and learning guidelines in specialised care units in South Africa. The results identified weaknesses in the implementation of the guidelines; hence the necessity for the development of effective strategies to improve patient safety.

Patient safety is an important aspect of healthcare delivery and is critical to healthcare quality. An assessment of the attitudes of nursing staff in infectious diseases wards towards patient safety may identify deficiencies and allow for the development of educational programmes to train nursing staff to participate in good patient safety practices.

To explore the current situation and influencing factors on nurses' attitudes towards patient safety in infectious diseases wards.

This cross-sectional study enrolled 446 nurses from infectious diseases wards in eight hospitals in the Hebei Province to participate in an electronic questionnaire survey from October to December 2020. The Chinese version of the safety attitude questionnaire was used to gather the opinions of these participants, and SPSS 22.0 statistical software was used to analyse the data.

The average score of safety attitudes towards patients was 3.59 ± 0.30. The scores for each dimension, from high to low, were as follows: management perception: 3.77 ± 0.42 points, pressure perception: 3.77 ± 0.42 points, safety atmosphere: 3.57 ± 0.43 points, job satisfaction: 3.57 ± 0.43 points, teamwork: 3.55 ± 0.50 points and working conditions: 3.50 ± 0.45 points. The results of the multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the influential factors on nurses' attitudes towards patient safety in infectious diseases wards were as follows: night shift working (β = 11.885, P = 0.000), years of nursing experience (β = 2.862, P = 0.001), education level (β = 4.462, P = 0.001) and marital status (β = 3.871, P = 1.002), which together explained 33.5% of the total variance.

Nurses' attitudes towards patient safety in infectious diseases wards were moderately high. Night shift work, years of nursing experience, education level and marital status affected nurses' attitudes towards patient safety. Managers should focus on these groups of nurses and improve their working conditions and job satisfaction to further enhance patient safety.

Education on legal obligations in healthcare related to medical malpractice is insufficient, which has the potential to reduce patient safety. Nurses need to improve their understanding of legal obligations in order to enhance patient safety. However, no easily accessible education program has been developed that covers both the concepts of legal obligations and patient safety.

This study sought to develop a web-based education program using medical malpractice cases and to evaluate the effectiveness with regard to legal obligations and patient safety competency of nurses.

The study design was a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of a newly-developed web-based education program.

Seven experts and 19 learners evaluated the developed program. One hundred eighteen nurses working in three hospitals were randomly assigned to the intervention group (N = 59) and the control group (N = 59).

The web-based program was developed using the analysis-design-development-implementation-evaluation model and evaluated by experts and learners. Data were collected from January to May 2019. The intervention was the five-week web-based education program. The post-test was conducted five weeks after the pre-test in the control and intervention groups.

The web-based program consisted of two modules on theoretical knowledge and seven modules on medical malpractice cases. The findings demonstrated significant differences in knowledge and cognition of legal obligations and patient safety competency between the control and intervention groups after the five-week intervention.

A web-based education program on medical malpractice cases enhanced nurses' awareness of legal obligations and patient safety competency. Therefore, this web-based educational program should be organized as an online continuing education program for clinical nurses. It will improve awareness of patient safety by clearly specifying the relationship between legal obligations and root causes of medical errors from various perspectives.

Patient safety has been identified as a global priority area. It is one of the most health care challenges. There is a rising number of patients' mortality in hospitals each year because of lapses in patient safety practice. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to assess knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors towards patient safety among nurses working at Asella Referral and Teaching Hospital.

Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted on 172 nurses working at Asella Referral and Teaching Hospital, Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. The data were collected from nurses from December 28, 2020 to January 05, 2021 by using a pretested questionnaire. The data were entered into Epi-Data version 4.2.0.0 and analyzed using the SPSS version 23.0 software.

A total of 172 nurses were enrolled in to the study, resulting a response rate of 99.4%. The mean age of the nurses was 32.53 years. More than half 94(54.7%) of them were female. The majority 133(77.3%) of them were qualified for degrees and above. The majority 155(90.1%) of them had working experience of ≤13years. The nurse's level of good knowledge, positive attitude, and good practice towards patient safety was 58.7% (n = 101, [95% CI; 51.7, 66.7]), 52.9% (n = 91, [95% CI; 43.6, 61.4]), and 50% (n = 86, [95% CI; 43.6, 57%]) respectively. The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed; working in the operation theatre unit [AOR = 5.01, 95% CI; 1.36, 18.46], having information on patient safety during initial education [AOR = 4.99, 95%CI; 1.87, 13.31], and having information on patient safety during continuing education [AOR = 2.85, 95% CI; 1.14, 7.12] were factors significantly associated with knowledge towards patient safety. Being male [AOR = 3.09, 95% CI; 1.38, 6.95], having working experience of >13 years [AOR = 8.37, 95% CI; 1.36, 51.70], having information on patient safety during initial education [AOR = 3.36, 95%CI; 1.11, 10.15], having information on patient safety during continuing education [AOR = 3.33, 95% CI; 1.25, 8.85], and having good Knowledge towards patient safety [AOR = 2.74, 95% CI; 1.21, 6.21] were factors significantly associated with attitude towards patient safety. Having information on patient safety during initial education [AOR = 5.35, 95%CI; 1.77, 16.17] and having a positive attitude towards patient safety [AOR = 3.02, 95% CI; 1.32, 6.91] were factors significantly associated with practice towards patient safety.

In the present study, more than half of the nurse's had good knowledge and positive attitude towards patient safety. However, only half of the nurses had good practice towards patient safety. Educational programs and training on patient safety may need to take place for nurses to abate these problems.
