Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between age-related eye diseases and the subsequent risk of dementia and depressive disorders remains inconsistent. Furthermore, the effects on anxiety disorders and sleep disorders have been underexplored. This study aims to comprehensively examine the impact of age-related eye diseases on common mental disorders in older adults, thereby enhancing our understanding of the mental health implications in these conditions. METHODS The electronic health records of 1,522,036 patients aged over 60 from ten institutions in South Korea were analyzed. Patients with and without age-related eye diseases were identified, and 1:4 propensity score matching (PSM) was implemented. A 10-year longitudinal analysis was conducted using the Cox proportional hazards model to calculate the hazard ratios (HR). A meta-analysis was performed to combine the results from different institutions. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the impact of specific age-related eye diseases (cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration) on mental disorders. RESULTS A total of 41,637 patients with age-related eye disease were matched with 134,908 patients without such conditions. Patients with age-related eye disease showed a significantly higher risk of mental disorders (dementia, HR: 1.21 [95 % CI: 1.14-1.27]; depressive disorders, HR: 1.28 [95 % CI: 1.20-1.36]; anxiety disorders, HR: 1.31 [95 % CI: 1.22-1.41]; sleep disorders, HR: 1.29 [95 % CI: 1.22-1.37]). In subgroup analyses, each of the three age-related eye diseases was significantly associated with an increased risk of mental disorders. (cataract, HR: 1.25-1.33; glaucoma, HR: 1.15-1.49; age-related macular degeneration, HR: 1.18-1.37). CONCLUSION Age-related eye diseases increase the risk of developing mental disorders in older adults, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to patient care in these conditions.

Abstract
Background Depressive symptoms are a common complication in patients with cataracts and may exacerbate cataract symptoms. Therefore, it is important to focus on depressive symptoms and their influencing factors in older people with cataracts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence rate of depressive symptoms and influencing factors in Chinese older people with cataracts. Methods Descriptive analyses were used to report the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, health status, and depressive symptoms of old people with cataracts in China. The chi-square test was used to compare differences between subjects with different demographic characteristics. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the factors that influenced the depressive symptoms of cataract patients. Meanwhile, a random forest model was developed in this study to rank the importance of the influencing factors. Results Three hundred and six (25.27%) of 1,211 cataract patients included in this study suffered from depressive symptoms. Logistic regression analysis suggested that poor economic situation (AOR = 3.162, 95%CI: 1.719-5.817), social participation (AOR = 1.530, 95%CI: 1.053-2.222), having hearing disorder (AOR = 1.445, 95%CI: 1.040-2.008), poor self-reported health status (AOR = 2.646, 95%CI: 1.705-4.106), poor life satisfaction (AOR = 3.586, 95%CI: 1.652-7.784) were risk factors for depressive symptoms in cataract patients and consumption of fresh fruits (AOR = 0.587, 95%CI: 0.369-0.933) was a protective factor for depressive symptoms in cataract patients. The results of the random forest showed that self-reported health status was the most important factor influencing depressive symptoms in cataract patients. The other factors, in order of importance, were life satisfaction, economic situation, fruits, hearing disorder, and social participation. Conclusion The results suggested that the development of depressive symptoms in cataract patients was influenced by various factors. Medical staff should monitor these influencing factors more closely when treating and caring for patients with cataracts.

Abstract
Purpose The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with mechanical ocular injuries, and the effects of worry and resilience on anxiety and depression. Patients and Methods Patients with one eye of mechanical ocular injuries and healthy residents were recruited from June 8, 2022, to March 1, 2023. All subjects participated in psychologically relevant questionnaires including the Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS), the Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS), the Connor- Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire(PSWQ). Data were collected and subjected to statistical analysis. Results There were no significant differences in SAS and SDS total scores based on demographics (p>0.05) except for the subjective appraisal of the family economy (p<0.05). The SAS and SDS total scores and the positive rates of anxiety and depression in the ocular trauma group were significantly higher than those in the healthy control group (p<0.01). The positive rates of anxiety and SAS total scores of individuals with mild visual impairment were significantly higher than those with low vision (p<0.01) and blindness (p<0.05). There was no difference between the remaining groups. The positive rates of anxiety and SAS total score (36.5%, 45.92) of individuals with mild visual impairment were significantly higher than those with low vision (4.3%, 38.15) (p<0.01) and blindness (19.4%, 40.19) (p<0.05). There was no difference between the other groups. All effects of mechanical ocular injuries on anxiety and depression were significant (p<0.01). The indirect mediating effects on anxiety by worry alone, resilience alone, resilience, and worry were significant (p<0.01). The mediating indirect impact on depression by worry alone (p<0.01), worry and resilience (p<0.05) were significant while resilience (p>0.05) did not show a significant mediation effect. Conclusion Patients with mechanical ocular injuries are prone to developing anxiety and depression with resilience and worry playing a mediating role.

Abstract
Purpose We aimed to investigate the risk of developing depression in individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma with associated vision impairment. Methods We conducted a nationwide, population-based cohort study using data from the Korean National Health Information Database and National Disability Registry. We assessed baseline characteristics such as age, sex, income level, lifestyle factors, anthropometric data, lab results, and Charlson Comorbidity Index scores through diagnostic codes and health screening data. Depression risk in relation to glaucoma and vision impairment was analyzed using a multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard model. Results Among 3,680,570 individuals screened through the Korean National Health Screening Program in 2009, 681,515 were newly diagnosed with depression during follow-up. Subjects with glaucoma showed a higher risk of depression than those without glaucoma, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 2.011 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.946-2.078) pre-adjustment and 1.085 (95 % CI: 1.050-1.121) post-adjustment for covariates. For those with glaucoma and vision impairment, the adjusted HR increased to 1.164 (95 % CI: 1.045-1.297) and to 1.207 (95 % CI: 1.039-1.403) with severe vision impairment. The association between glaucoma and depression was more pronounced in men (P for interaction = 0.001) and those with a Charlson Comorbidity Index <3 (P for interaction = 0.008). Conclusions Primary open-angle glaucoma increased the risk of developing depression. The risk escalated gradually with the presence and severity of concurrent vision impairment. The impact of glaucoma and vision impairment on new-onset depression was greater in men and in those with less comorbidities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This research investigates the associations between Dry Eye Disease (DED), pain perception, and mental health, focusing on how neuropathic pain influences treatment efficacy and patients' quality of life. METHODS AND RESULTS The study delves into the complexity of DED by assessing the correlation between ocular pain, depression, PTSD, and systemic pain conditions. It highlights the role of chronic neuropathic pain in DED and the nociceptive hypothesis, which suggests that psychological stress can exacerbate DED symptoms. Additionally, it explores diagnostic and management strategies for DED, emphasizing the importance of considering psychological aspects to improve patient care. CONCLUSIONS The intricate nature of DED, closely linked to mental health issues, requires a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Addressing neuropathic pain and psychological factors is crucial for effective DED management. Future efforts should focus on developing specific interventions targeting DED's physical and emotional impacts to enhance overall patient well-being.

Abstract
Background: Dry eye disease is a common disorder of the ocular surface, leading patients to seek eye care. Clinical signs and symptoms are currently used to diagnose dry eye disease. Metabolomics, a method for analyzing biological systems, has been found helpful in identifying distinct metabolites in patients and in detecting metabolic profiles that may indicate dry eye disease at early stages. In this study, we explored the use of machine learning and metabolomics data to identify cataract patients who suffer from dry eye disease, a topic that, to our knowledge, has not been previously explored. As there is no one-size-fits-all machine learning model for metabolomics data, choosing the most suitable model can significantly affect the quality of predictions and subsequent metabolomics analyses. Methods: To address this challenge, we conducted a comparative analysis of eight machine learning models on two metabolomics data sets from cataract patients with and without dry eye disease. The models were evaluated and optimized using nested k-fold cross-validation. To assess the performance of these models, we selected a set of suitable evaluation metrics tailored to the data set's challenges. Results: The logistic regression model overall performed the best, achieving the highest area under the curve score of 0.8378, balanced accuracy of 0.735, Matthew's correlation coefficient of 0.5147, an F1-score of 0.8513, and a specificity of 0.5667. Additionally, following the logistic regression, the XGBoost and Random Forest models also demonstrated good performance. Conclusions: The results show that the logistic regression model with L2 regularization can outperform more complex models on an imbalanced data set with a small sample size and a high number of features, while also avoiding overfitting and delivering consistent performance across cross-validation folds. Additionally, the results demonstrate that it is possible to identify dry eye in cataract patients from tear film metabolomics data using machine learning models.

Abstract
Purpose Depression is common in people with visual impairment, and the onset may be influenced by aspects related to light. The aim was to explore the associations of season, sunlight, and light sensitivity with depressive symptoms in this population. Methods Data regarding self-reported depressive symptoms from seven cross-sectional studies conducted between 2009 and 2018 were combined with information concerning sensitivity to light, season on the date of self-report, and potential sunlight exposure in the 2 weeks prior to self-report. The latter was calculated by summing up the daily sunlight hours detected by the weather station nearest to the residence of each participant. Logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the associations. Results Participants (N = 1925) experienced clinically significant depressive symptoms most often in winter (32.8%), followed by summer (27.4%), spring (26.2%), and fall (24.2%). The odds of experiencing depression in fall were significantly lower compared with winter (odds ratio [OR] = 0.67, P = 0.007). An increase in the hours of sunlight in the participant's environment was associated with lower odds to experience depressive symptoms (OR = 0.995, P = 0.011). People who were sensitive to bright light had higher odds of experiencing depressive symptoms (OR = 1.80, P < 0.001). Other differences found between subgroups were not consistent. Conclusions It seems likely that season, sunlight, and light sensitivity play a role in depression among people with visual impairment. Further research is needed, exploring the experiences in this population, the actual sunlight exposure using objective measures, and treatment options. Translational Relevance Clinicians should consider these factors when treating visually impaired patients with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Dry eye disease is a multifactorial condition characterised by tear film instability, hyperosmolarity and ocular surface inflammation. Understanding the epidemiology of dry eye disease and recognising both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors can assist eye care practitioners in assessing, treating, and managing patients with the condition. This review considers current knowledge surrounding its incidence and prevalence, as well as associated demographic, systemic, ocular, and iatrogenic, and lifestyle-related modifiable risk factors. Population-based prevalence estimates vary according to the diagnostic criteria used to define dry eye disease, as well as severity and demographic characteristics of the population. Considering recent data and variable population demographics, conservative prevalence estimates suggest that 10-20% of the population over 40 years of age report moderate to severe symptoms and/or seek treatment for dry eye disease. Individuals with specific non-modifiable demographic risk factors may be at increased risk of developing dry eye disease. Advanced age, female sex and East Asian ethnicity have been identified as key non-modifiable demographic features predisposing individuals to dry eye disease. Systemic conditions that have been associated with an increased risk of dry eye disease include migraine, Sjögren syndrome, connective tissue disorders, mental health disorders, diabetes mellitus and androgen deficiency. Medications that may contribute to this risk include antidepressants, antihistamines, and hormone replacement therapy. Ocular and iatrogenic risk factors of dry eye disease include blepharitis, Demodex infestation, ocular surgery, blink completeness, contact lens wear, and topical ophthalmic medications. A range of modifiable lifestyle factors that can increase the risk of dry eye disease have also been identified, including low humidity environments, digital screen use, quality of sleep, diet, and eye cosmetic wear. Dry eye is a common disease affecting millions globally. Increasing knowledge regarding its associated risk factors can better prepare the eye care practitioner to successfully manage patients with this ocular surface disease.

Abstract
Background Progressive loss of visual acuteness is known to be associated with anxiety, insecurity, loss of independence, and altered social functioning, which may lead to low mood and subsequently depression. Emotionally adjusting to vision loss can dramatically change one's independence. Reduced workplace productivity in adults with visual impairment is associated with lower rates of workforce participation and increased rates of anxiety and depression. Most studies for psychological comorbidities in the legally blind population are conducted in individuals who present to the psychiatry or psychology department/clinics or to facilities for blindness certification. Due to the paucity of community-based data in the Indian scenario, the current study was undertaken. Aim To evaluate the psychological distress and satisfaction with life of people who were diagnosed as blind in the community. Materials and Methods The sample was based on the identification of blind persons in a door-to-door screening for eye and vision problems in 44535 individuals conducted in 2015-16 in the middle to lower socioeconomic populations in the suburban area of Yerawada, Maharashtra. Those who were suspected of having low vision underwent a detailed clinical examination including visual acuity estimation, portable slit lamp examination, I-Kare tonometry, and fundoscopy, conducted by an ophthalmologist to assess and verify the lack of vision. Subsequently, the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were also applied upon revisiting the participants in 2020-2021. Results The majority of participants were middle-aged or elderly and no significant gender variation was noted in terms of blindness. Maximum psychological disability was seen after 6 to 15 years after the onset of blindness. More than 80% of the patients with complete blindness had some psychiatric comorbidity or distress and more than half reported that their daily activities were affected due to their diagnosis. Blind persons had significantly higher scores on the GHQ-12 and significantly lower scores on SWLS. Complete blindness was positively correlated with GHQ-12 scores and negatively correlated with SWLS scores and the age of the subject. Conclusion This study demonstrates that psychological distress and low levels of satisfaction with life are common among the severely visually impaired and blind. There is a dire need to improve access to rehabilitation services and psychological support for the blind and their caregivers.

Abstract
Purpose: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial condition significantly impacting patients' quality of life (QoL). This study aims to present a case series highlighting the effectiveness of customized scleral lenses in managing severe DED and improving patient outcomes. Methods: This case series includes three patients with severe DED refractory to conventional treatments. Customized scleral lenses were fitted for each patient, and clinical outcomes were evaluated over a period of two months. Assessments included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), slit-lamp examination findings, and corneal National Eye Institute (NEI) scores. Results: All three patients demonstrated significant improvements in BCVA, reductions in ocular symptoms, and enhanced ocular surface health. Patient 1, with secondary Sjögren's syndrome and suspected mucous membrane pemphigoid, showed resolution of conjunctival hyperemia and epithelial defects. Patient 2, with graft versus host disease, exhibited resolution of punctate keratitis and the absence of thread mucus. Patient 3, post-oncologic surgery, achieved complete resolution of keratoconjunctivitis sicca and the restoration of vision. Conclusions: Customized scleral lenses are a useful therapeutic option for severe DED, providing significant symptomatic relief and enhancing patients' quality of life. Their use should be considered in refractory cases to optimize ocular surface health and visual outcomes.

Abstract
Background: Depression has been shown to be associated with eye diseases, including dry eye disease (DED), cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy (DR). This narrative review explores potential pathophysiological connections between depression and eye disease, as well as its potential correlations with ocular parameters. Methods: A literature search was conducted in August 2022 in PUBMED, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. Published articles related to the subject were consolidated and classified according to respective eye diseases and pathophysiological mechanisms. Results: The literature reviewed suggests that common pathophysiological states like inflammation and neurodegeneration may contribute to both depression and certain eye diseases, while somatic symptoms and altered physiology, such as disruptions in circadian rhythm due to eye diseases, can also influence patients' mood states. Grounded in the shared embryological, anatomical, and physiological features between the eye and the brain, depression is also correlated to changes observed in non-invasive ophthalmological imaging modalities, such as changes in the retinal nerve fibre layer and retinal microvasculature. Conclusions: There is substantial evidence of a close association between depression and eye diseases. Understanding the underlying concepts can inform further research on treatment options and monitoring of depression based on ocular parameters.

Abstract
PURPOSE Visual impairment and blindness caused by cataracts are major public health problems. Several factors are associated with an increased risk of age-related cataracts, such as age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and ultraviolet radiation. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the association between body mass index and age-related cataracts. METHODS Studies on weight and age-related cataracts published from January 2011 to July 2020 were reviewed by searching PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science databases. The random-effects and fixed-effects models were used for the meta-analysis, and the results were reported as odd ratios. RESULTS A total of nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. No correlation was found between underweight and nuclear cataracts (OR=1.31, 95% CI [-0.50 to 3.12], p=0.156). The results of the random-effects model showed that overweight was significantly associated with age-related cataracts and reduced the risk of age-related cataracts (OR=0.91, 95% CI [0.80-1.02], p<0.0001; I2=62.3%, p<0.0001). Significant correlations were found between overweight and cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataracts (OR=0.95, 95% CI [0.66-1.24], p<0.0001; OR=0.92, 95% CI (0.76-1.08), p<0.0001; OR=0.87, 95% CI [0.38-1.02], p<0.0001). Significant correlations were found between obesity and cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataracts (OR=1.00, 95% CI [0.82-1.17], p<0.0001; OR=1.07, 95% CI [0.92-1.22], p<0.0001; OR=1.14, 95% CI [0.91-1.37], p<0.0001). CONCLUSION This finding suggested a significant correlation between body mass index and age-related cataracts, with overweight and obesity reducing or increasing the risk of age-related cataracts, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this article is to systematically review the association between dry eye and sleep quality. METHODS PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and grey literature databases were searched for observational studies published before April 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using STAT15 software. RESULTS A total of 21 studies with 419,218 participants were included. The results showed that the dry eye subjects had a worse sleep quality than the healthy population, with poorer subjective sleep quality, longer sleep latency, and a higher risk of unhealthy sleep duration such as insufficient sleep or excessive sleep. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores of the dry eye subjects were significantly higher than those of the control subjects (WMD = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.06, 2.50, P < 0.001). The dry eye subjects scored higher than the control subjects in sleep quality, sleep latency, and sleep disturbance in PSQI; there was no difference between the dry eye individuals and control subjects in sleep duration, sleep efficiency, daytime dysfunction, and sleep medication scores. The risk of sleep disorders in the dry eye subjects was significantly higher than that in the non-dry eye subjects (RR = 2.20, 95%CI: 1.78, 2.72, P < 0.001); the risk of insufficient sleep in the dry eye subjects was higher than that in the control subjects (RR = 3.76, 95%CI: 3.15, 4.48, P < 0.001), and the prevalence of excessive sleepiness in dry eye subjects was higher than that in the control subjects (RR = 5.53, 95%CI: 3.83, 7.18, P < 0.001). The ESS scores of the dry eye subjects were significantly higher than those of the control subjects (WMD = 3.02, 95%CI: 2.43, 3.60, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis suggests that individuals with dry eye have a worse sleep quality than the healthy population, with poorer subjective sleep quality, longer sleep latency, and higher risk of unhealthy sleep duration such as insufficient sleep or excessive sleepiness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although cataract surgery has been proposed as a potentially modifiable protective factor for enhancing emotional well-being in cataract patients, studies examining the relationship between anxiety or depression and cataract surgery have yielded inconsistent findings. This review summarizes existing evidence to establish whether cataract surgery is associated with depression and anxiety in older adults. METHODS A literature search was conducted across PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases. An initial screening by abstracts and titles was performed, followed by a review and assessment of the methodological quality of the relevant full papers, and final inclusion of 44 studies were deemed eligible for inclusion in this review. RESULTS Among 44 included studies, 36 studies (81.8%) were observational studies concerning the association of cataract surgery or cataracts with anxiety or depression, four studies (9.1%) were interventional studies, and four studies (9.1%) were reviews. Cataract surgery notably enhances the mental health of individuals with impaired vision. However, the multifaceted nature of psychological well-being, influenced by various factors, suggests that cataract surgery may not address all aspects comprehensively. Additionally, preoperative anxiety and depression significantly impact cataract surgery outcomes. CONCLUSION Vision impairment in older adults is closely associated with increased symptoms of depression and anxiety. While surgical intervention for cataracts improves these symptoms, it might be less effective for mental disorders with multifactorial causes. Notably, anxiety or depression poses challenges to successful preoperative and intraoperative cataract surgeries.

Purpose Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, is suspected to exhibit a notable association with psychological disturbances. This study aimed to investigate epidemiological associations and explore shared genetic architecture between glaucoma and mental traits, including depression and anxiety. Methods Multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression models were employed to investigate longitudinal associations based on UK Biobank. A stepwise approach was used to explore the shared genetic architecture. First, linkage disequilibrium score regression inferred global genetic correlations. Second, MiXeR analysis quantified the number of shared causal variants. Third, specific shared loci were detected through conditional/conjunctional false discovery rate (condFDR/conjFDR) analysis and characterized for biological insights. Finally, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was conducted to investigate bidirectional causal associations. Results Glaucoma was significantly associated with elevated risks of hospitalized depression (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.54; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-2.34) and anxiety (HR = 2.61; 95% CI, 1.70-4.01) compared to healthy controls. Despite the absence of global genetic correlations, MiXeR analysis revealed 300 variants shared between glaucoma and depression, and 500 variants shared between glaucoma and anxiety. Subsequent condFDR/conjFDR analysis discovered 906 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) jointly associated with glaucoma and depression and two associated with glaucoma and anxiety. The MR analysis did not support robust causal associations but indicated the existence of pleiotropic genetic variants influencing both glaucoma and depression. Conclusions Our study enhances the existing epidemiological evidence and underscores the polygenic overlap between glaucoma and mental traits. This observation suggests a correlation shaped by pleiotropic genetic variants rather than being indicative of direct causal relationships.

Abstract
Previous studies have recognized glaucoma as a neurodegenerative disease that causes extensive brain damage and is closely associated with cognitive function. In this study, we employed functional MRI to examine the intrinsic functional connectivity patterns of the default mode network (DMN) in patients diagnosed with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), exploring its association with cognitive dysfunction. A total of 34 patients diagnosed with PACG and 34 healthy controls (HC), who were matched in terms of sex, age, and education, were included in the control group. The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) was selected as the region of interest to examine functional connectivity alterations. Compared with the HC group, functional connectivity was attenuated in left anterior cingulum cortex and left paracentral lobule between with PCC in the PACG group, the results are statistically significant. Our study revealed that patients with PACG exhibit weakened functional connectivity within the DMN. This finding suggests the presence of a neurological mechanism that is associated with both visual dysfunction and cognitive impairments in PACG patients. Furthermore, our study provides neuroimaging evidence that can aid in the exploration of spontaneous neurological alterations and facilitate a deeper investigation of alterations in the visual conduction pathways of PACG patients.

Abstract
The aim of global ophthalmology is to maximize vision, ocular health and functional ability, thereby contributing to overall health and well-being, social inclusion and quality of life of every individual worldwide. Currently, an estimated 1.1 billion people live with visual impairment, 90% of which can be prevented or cured through largely cost-effective interventions. At the same time, 90% of people affected live in regions with insufficient eye health coverage. This challenge drove the World Health Organization (WHO) and a group of nongovernmental organizations to launch "VISION 2020: the Right to Sight", a global campaign which recently concluded after 20 years. The achievements, challenges and lessons learned were identified and incorporated into the current campaign "2030 IN SIGHT".

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of anxiety and depression on clinician decision-making in patients suffering from chronic eye disease in ophthalmological clinical practice. DESIGN AND SETTING This multicentre observational study, in collaboration with the WHO, included ophthalmologists and their patients affected by chronic eye disease. States of anxiety and depression were screened with specific questionnaires, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), self-administered by patients before the visit. In the present analysis, we report data from three major eye care centres in Italy between 2021 and 2022. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES To assess self-reported changes in ophthalmologists' clinical approach (communication style and their clinical-therapeutic strategies) and decisions after knowing questionnaire scores (primary aim), and to analyse the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores in patients with chronic eye diseases (secondary aim). RESULTS 41 ophthalmologists and 359 patients were included. The results from PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores showed critical depression and anxiety status scores (PHQ-9 ≥5 and GAD-7 ≥10) in 258 patients. In 74% of cases, no actions were taken by the ophthalmologists based on these scores; in 26% of cases, they changed their clinical approach; and in 14% of cases, they referred the patients for psychological/psychiatric evaluation. CONCLUSIONS States of anxiety and depression affect many patients with chronic eye conditions and need to be detected and managed early to improve patients' well-being. Providing ophthalmologists with knowledge of their patients' psychological conditions can change the clinical management and attitude towards referral for a psychological evaluation. Further studies are needed to expand our knowledge of how to raise awareness among ophthalmologists regarding multimorbidity of patients suffering from chronic eye diseases in order to achieve better clinical outcomes.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE The impact of dry eye disease on patients' daily lives is understood by optometrists, but they seldom use this understanding in their patient management. PURPOSE Dry eye disease can significantly impact a person's daily life and is known to cause psychological symptoms. Treating and managing patients with dry eye disease can be challenging, as an approach based solely on signs is unlikely to reflect patients' true burden. Because optometrists play a crucial role in the care of dry eye disease patients, it is necessary to examine their awareness of the negative impact of dry eye disease on patients' daily lives and how they manage this during their consultation time, including diagnosis and management. METHODS This study has an exploratory, qualitative research design. Twelve semistructured online interviews were conducted with optometrists in second-line eye care through a convenience sample. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed after a thematic analysis. RESULTS The main findings were that few optometrists actively asked about patients' perceived burden, many optometrists did not mention all the possible treatment options or practical advice that could benefit dry eye disease patients, and few were aware of the possible help that other health care providers could provide, besides the optometrist. CONCLUSIONS Dutch optometrists are aware of the impact that dry eye disease can have on their patients' daily lives, but seldom use this information as part of their management plan.

Abstract
Dry Eye Disease (DED) is an increasingly common condition that affects between 5% and 50% of the global population. Even though DED is most frequently diagnosed in older people, it has also been diagnosed in young adults and adolescents more frequently in recent years (employees, gamers). People can experience different types of symptoms and find it challenging to read, watch TV, cook, climb stairs, and meet friends. Mild and severe dry eye can reduce quality of life similarly to mild psoriasis and moderate-to-severe angina. Furthermore, DED patients experience serious difficulties driving vehicles, especially at night, and show a decrease in work productivity, which, when combined with the relevant indirect cost that this condition produces, poses a serious challenge in our days. In addition, DED patients are more likely to develop depression and suicidal ideations and experience frequent sleep disorders. Finally, it is discussed how lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity, blinking exercises, and a proper diet, have positive implications for the management of this condition. Our aim is to draw attention to the negative effects of dry eye in real life, which are unique to each patient, especially as they relate to the non-visual symptoms experienced by DED patients.

Abstract
Background Systematic data on mental health issues among adults awaiting cataract treatment are not readily available in India. We explored the prevalence and predictors of depressive and generalized anxiety (GA) symptoms in a cohort of adults awaiting cataract surgery. Methods Our study is based on data from baseline assessments which were conducted as part of a multicentre prospective, longitudinal cohort study. Subjects were recruited from four eye hospitals to assess depression and GA and associated risk factors using standardized scales, i.e. Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). Variation in the intensity of depression and GA was assessed using multiple classification analysis (MCA). Results A total of 813 adults awaiting cataract surgery participated, of whom 456 (56.1%) were men. The mean (SD) CES-D and GAD-7 scores were 24.6 (7.8) and 6.3 (SD 4.2) for men and 25.8 (8.9) and 6.9 (4.4) for women, respectively. The overall prevalence of depression score of >16 was 87.4% (95% confidence interval [CI] 84.7%- 89.6%), and GA score of >10 was 57.1% (95% CI 53.5%-60.7%). The prevalence of comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms was 56.6% (95% CI 52.9%- 60.2%). MCA showed that being neglected and mistreated by family/friends because of vision condition and facing difficulty and requiring help with daily tasks had the highest effect on the intensity of both depression (beta=0.254 and 0.238, respectively) and GA (beta=0.219 and 0.211, respectively). Conclusion The majority of adults with untreated cataract had both depressive and GA symptoms. These findings could be used for planning mental health interventions for adults awaiting cataract surgery.

Abstract
Objective Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody-seropositive optic neuritis (AQP4-ON) is one of the most common types of optic neuritis in China. However, the association between AQP4-ON and vision-related quality of life (QoL) and depression remains poorly understood. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 57 patients with optic neuritis were evaluated for their vision-related QoL using a Chinese version of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25) and assessed for depressive symptoms using a Chinese version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Data regarding participants' age, sex, visual acuity, and the number of recurrence events were gathered. Linear regression analysis was employed to investigate the relationships between AQP4-ON and vision-related QoL, as well as depression. Results Of the 57 included patients, 28 were AQP4-ON, and 29 were idiopathic optic neuritis (ION). AQP4-ON demonstrated a significant correlation with a decreased VFQ-25 composite score (Mean difference, -11.65 [95% CI, -21.61 to -1.69]; p = 0.023) and an increased BDI-II score (Mean difference, 6.48 [95% CI, 0.25 to 12.71]; p = 0.042) when compared to ION. The BDI-II score was correlated with the VFQ-25 composite score (Spearman ρ = -0.469; p < 0.001) but not with the visual acuity in the worse-seeing eye (Spearman ρ = 0.024; p = 0.860) or in the better-seeing eye (Spearman ρ = -0.039; p = 0.775), bilateral severe visual impairment (Spearman ρ = 0.039; p = 0.772) or the number of recurrence events (Spearman ρ = 0.184; p = 0.171). Conclusion AQP4-positive optic neuritis is associated with a decline in vision-related quality of life as well as an increased likelihood of experiencing depression. It is crucial for clinicians to assess both vision-related QoL and depression in patients with AQP4-positive optic neuritis to provide patient-centered care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to synthesize data quantifying the prevalence and severity of common psychological conditions in patients with glaucoma. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS Databases including Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Open Grey, and ProQuest Theses and dissertations were searched. Two reviewers independently assessed and screened all studies, followed by quality assessment of included studies using the modified Downs and Black checklist. Data were pooled using fixed-effect and random-effects models. RESULTS Of 2067 studies identified by the search strategy, 57 passed full-text screening, and 45 studies (4 995 538 subjects) were eligible for analysis. Overall, the prevalence of depression (effect size [ES] = 0.19, 95% CI 0.16-0.23; n = 31), anxiety (ES = 0.25, 95% CI 0.21-0.30; n = 18), and sleep disorders (ES = 0.47, 95% CI 0.26-0.68; n = 7) were high in patients with glaucoma. Similarly, symptomatic measurements of depression (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.46, 95% CI 0.19-0.73), anxiety (SMD = 0.44, 95% CI 0.08-0.81), and sleep quality (SMD = 0.72, 95% CI 0.22-1.21) were significant in glaucoma patients. CONCLUSIONS A higher prevalence and severity of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders was experienced in patients with glaucoma compared with patients without glaucoma. Caregivers as well as health care providers may need to be aware of unique psychological and social stressors placed on glaucoma patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Visual impairment from cataracts is closely associated with low income, but trial evidence regarding the impact of surgery on income is lacking. We investigated whether cataract surgery could increase personal income. DESIGN A 2-arm, parallel-group, open-label, randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03020056). METHODS Persons aged 50 years or older in rural Guangdong, China, with best-corrected visual acuity <6/19 in both eyes due to cataracts were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive surgery within 4 weeks (intervention group), or 1 year later (control group). All participants were interviewed at baseline and end-line regarding demographic characteristics, income, and quality of life. RESULTS Among the 292 eligible persons (5.40%, mean age = 74.0 y, 61.0% women) randomly assigned to intervention (n = 146) or control (n = 146) groups, 12 participants (8.22%) in the intervention group and 1 (0.68%) in the control did not receive the allocated intervention. By study closeout, 18 participants (6.16%) were lost to follow-up. The mean 1-year income increase of the intervention group ($2469-$3588; change = $1119) was significantly larger than that of the controls ($2258-$2052; change = $-206), a between-group difference of $1325 (relative increase = 54.0%; 95% CI = $739 to $1911; P < 0.001). In multivariable modeling, intervention group membership was associated with greater income increase (β = 1143.2; 95% CI = 582.0 to 1704.3; P < 0.001). Greater improvement in best-corrected visual acuity was associated with income increase in univariable modeling (β = 1626.9; 95% CI = 1083.6 to 2170.1; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Cataract surgery substantially increases personal income in rural China, offering a strategy for poverty alleviation. The strong association between increased income and change in visual acuity enhances the biological plausibility of the result.

Abstract
The psychosocial and health consequences of ocular conditions that cause visual impairment (VI) are extensive and include impaired daily activities, social isolation, cognitive impairment, impaired functional status and functional decline, increased reliance on others, increased risk of motor vehicle accidents, falls and fractures, poor self-rated health, and depression. We aimed to determine whether VI increases the likelihood of a poor prognosis, including mental illness, suicide, and mortality over time. In this large, location, population-based, nested, cohort study, we used data from 2000 to 2015 in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), which includes diagnoses of all the patients with VI. Baseline features, comorbidities, and prognostic variables were evaluated using a 1:4-matched cohort analysis. Furthermore, comparisons were performed using Cox regression and Bonferroni-correction (for multiple comparisons) to study the association between VI and poor prognosis (mental illness, suicide). The study outcome was the cumulative incidence of poor prognosis among the visually impaired and controls. A two-tailed Bonferroni-corrected p < 0.001 was considered statistically significant. Among the 1,949,101 patients enlisted in the NHIRD, 271 had been diagnosed with VI. Risk factors for poor prognosis and the crude hazard ratio was 3.004 (95% confidence interval 2.135-4.121, p < 0.001). Participants with VI had an increased risk of poor prognosis according to the sensitivity analysis, with a poor prognosis within the first year and first five years. VI was associated with suicide and mental health risks. This study revealed that patients with VI have a nearly 3-fold higher risk of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, depression, bipolar, and sleep disorders, than the general population. Early detection through comprehensive examinations based on increased awareness in the clinical context may help maintain visual function and avoid additional complications.

Abstract
The prevalence of depression among visually impaired or blind children and adolescents has not been systematically reviewed. This study aims to provide the prevalence of depression among visually impaired or blind children and adolescents. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines (PRISMA) (2020) and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines. A systematic search of various online databases was done to identify and include studies reporting the prevalence of depression among visually impaired or blind children and adolescents (aged up to 20 years). A random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of depression. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 to explain heterogeneity meta-regressive analysis and subgroup analyses were done. With the finally selected 13 studies consisting of 822 participants, the overall pooled prevalence of depression or dysthymia among visually impaired children or adolescents was 14% (137/822 individuals, 95% CI = 9% to 20%), with high heterogeneity between studies (I2 = 80.11%; P < 0.001). Five studies that expressed gender distribution showed a cumulative prevalence of diagnosed depressive disorders was 6.85% and 18.96%, respectively, for male (n = 219, I2 = 47.52) and female (n = 116, I2 = 60.6%) participants. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we selected and analyzed 13 studies and estimated pooled prevalence of depression was 14% (95% CI = 9% to 20%), among visually impaired or blind children and adolescents.

Abstract
Introduction: There are many reports on the association of various psychiatric disorders with visual impairment. The association of dry eye syndrome with depressive disorders has been particularly well documented. In the context of keratoconus patients group, data on similar relationships are inconclusive. Attempts have also been made to assess the personality of patients
suffering from keratoconus, and the first study in this area was produced as early as 1976.
Material and methods: For the literature review, full-text medical databases, such as PubMed and Embase, were searched for articles on the association of keratoconus with depressive-anxiety disorder and personality disorder. Articles published within the last 30 years were considered.
Results: The personality of patients with keratoconus has been a research issue for many years, but research to date has not clearly defined what personality traits characterise this particular group of patients. Research into the relationship between keratoconus and depressive-anxiety disorders has only recently been conducted, and the results - although inconclusive - suggest a co-occurrence of depressive symptoms with keratoconus. A different and interesting field for further research is the association of keratoconus with schizophrenia, as these diseases may have a common background.
Conclusions: A review of the literature does not identify a 'keratoconus personality', but there are reports of specific functioning in patients with keratoconus. There are isolated reports in the literature regarding the co-occurrence of keratoconus and depressive-anxiety disorder.

Abstract
Glaucoma and diabetes mellitus are two common chronic diseases in Europe and worldwide which require intensive therapy. Various pathophysiological mechanisms have been discussed which favour the development of glaucoma, especially in the presence of diabetes mellitus. Medicinal and surgical adjustment of intraocular pressure is associated with some limitations in patients with diabetes mellitus, for example, filtering interventions show lower success rates than in non-diabetic glaucoma patients. Besides pure ophthalmological endocrinological therapy, the psychological burden of two chronic diseases should also be considered and included in the individual therapy plan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with Inherited Retinal Diseases (IRDs) are at increased risk for vision-related anxiety due to progressive and irreversible vision loss, yet little is known about risk factors for anxiety in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a single-center, retrospective cross-sectional study at a large academic center. 128 adults with an IRD and without other significant eye conditions were recruited between December 2016 and March 2020. Participants were asked about the duration and number of symptoms they had in the following vision domains: reading, contrast vision, color vision, glare/light sensitivity, night vision, and peripheral vision. The outcomes of interest were the two domains of the Michigan Vision-Related Anxiety Questionnaire (MVAQ), rod- and cone-function related anxiety. We conducted an adjusted analysis to isolate the independent effect of duration and number of symptoms on vision-related anxiety. RESULTS Of 126 participants had complete data, 62 (49%) were female and 64 (51%) were male, with an average age of 49 years (range: 18-87). Patients with duration of symptoms for greater than 25 years had an adjusted anxiety theta that was one-half standard deviations lower than patients with symptoms for less time. Patients with higher number of symptoms had higher anxiety theta after adjusting for confounding variables (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS The number of symptoms but not the duration of symptoms, is an independent risk factor for vision-related anxiety. Patients with more symptoms are at higher risk for vision-related anxiety. Having symptoms for longer than 25 years may reduce this anxiety.

Abstract
The mammalian brain is reported to contain about 106-109 neurons linked together to form complex networks. Physiologically, the neuronal networks interact in a rhythmic oscillatory pattern to coordinate the brain's functions. Neuromodulation covers a broad range of techniques that can alter neuronal network activity through the targeted delivery of electrical or chemical stimuli. Neuromodulation can be used to potentially treat medical conditions and can serve as a research tool for studying neural functions. Typically, the main method of neuromodulation is to electrically stimulate specific structures in both the central and peripheral nervous systems via surgically implanted electrodes. Therefore, it is imperative to explore novel and safer methods for altering neuronal network activity. Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) has rapidly emerged as a non-invasive neuromodulatory technique that can exert beneficial effects on the brain through the eyes. There is substantial evidence to show that TES can change the brain oscillations in rodents. Moreover, the molecular data clearly shows that TES can also activate non-visual brain regions. In this review, we first summarize the use of TES in the retina and then discuss its effects in the brain through the eye-brain connection. We then comprehensively review the substantial evidence from electrophysiological, behavioral, and molecular studies on the role of TES on modulating neurons in the brain. Lastly, we discuss the implications and possible future directions of the research on TES as a non-invasive tool for neuromodulation of the brain via directly stimulating the mammalian eye.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Visual impairment resulting from diseases such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) may cause behavioural, environmental, psychological, and logistical challenges that could act as barriers to effective uptake and sustainability of treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents (anti-VEGFs). Understanding emotions and experiences of patients with nAMD may help inform the determinants of adherence, and could contribute to improvements in ophthalmic outcomes and quality of life. METHODS Seventeen patients with nAMD receiving anti-VEGF injections were enrolled from three clinics: one each in France (n = 5), Germany (n = 6), and the UK (n = 6). Patients' health information and treatment characteristics were collected. Individual phone interviews were conducted by experienced health care interviewers. Transcripts were analysed thematically. RESULTS Patients (53% female) had a mean age of 77 years. Bilateral anti-VEGF injections were received by 24% (n = 4); and most (76%, n = 13) were adherent to their treatment. Patient emotions at diagnosis ranged from happiness at learning about the treatment for nAMD to being terrified of receiving an injection in the eye. Most patients mentioned feeling anxious and fearful before their first injection despite receiving reassurance. After the first injection, these feelings and apprehension abated for many, but not all. With the goal of maintaining the best possible vision, few (24%, n = 4) patients reported more than one missed appointment, and most had never considered stopping treatment. No patient reported additional assistance beyond family support; however, many had difficulties with recreational and domestic activities and had developed coping strategies. CONCLUSION This study provides insights on patients' emotions related to their experience of nAMD and its management, highlighting the varying experiences between individuals. It shows the importance of the patient's voice when considering patient care and management, and how the nature and timing of interventions can improve the experience of living with and managing nAMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Association between some somatic diseases and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) are well-known. We aimed to study psychiatric diseases and dementia and their association with POAG in the total population of Region Stockholm. METHODS All living individuals above 18 years of age who resided in Stockholm County, Sweden, on 1 January 2017 (N = 1,703,675) were included. Data were obtained from administrative regional data. We identified individuals with specified psychiatric disorders in the years 2010-2019, and further identified those with an incident diagnosis of POAG during 2012-2018. Analyses were performed by age-group and sex. We calculated odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), adjusted for age and neighborhood socio-economic status for individuals with POAG, and used individuals without POAG as referents. RESULTS A total of 16,299 cases of POAG were identified, of whom 9204 were women and 7095 men. Adjusted OR (95% CI) for the risk of POAG was 0.653 (0.610-0.698) for women and 0.714 (0.656-0.778) for men with dementia, respectively. The OR for POAG was 0.478 (0.355-0.643) for women with psychosis, and 1.164 (1.105-1.227) for women with depression. A high neighbourhood socio-economic status was associated with a higher risk of POAG. Other associations were non-significant. CONCLUSION The prevalence of newly diagnosed POAG was decreased in men and women with dementia, and in women with psychosis, which could be an underestimation, owing to lack of investigation, which warrants attention. The risk of POAG was increased in women with depression, which could be secondary to the glaucoma diagnosis.KEY MESSAGESThe prevalence of newly diagnosed glaucoma was decreased in men and women with dementia, and in women with psychosis. A lower prevalence of newly diagnosed glaucoma may be due to an underestimation, owing to a lack of investigation.The risk of glaucoma was increased in women with depression, which could be secondary to the glaucoma diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE This umbrella review aimed to summarize the available evidence on the association between dry eye disease and depression. METHODS We searched the Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane databases using the search string "(Dry eye syndrome OR Keratoconjunctivitis sicca OR KCS OR Aqueous tear deficiency OR Sjogren syndrome) AND (depression OR depressive symptoms) AND (meta-analysis OR systematic review)" from inception to 20 July 2022. We considered all meta-analyses investigating the association between dry eye disease and depression. RESULTS After summarizing the included meta-analyses, it was concluded that dry eye disease is associated with depression. The symptoms of dry eye disease affect the daily lives of patients, thus affecting their mood. However, further evidence is required to confirm this association. CONCLUSION This finding highlights the importance of psychological support for patients with dry eye disease. Future clinical studies should investigate the mechanism underlying the association between dry eye disease and depression. Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic caused unexpected and unavoidable changes in daily life worldwide. Governments and communities found ways to mitigate the impact of these changes, but many solutions were inaccessible to people with visual impairments. This work aimed to investigate how blind individuals subjectively experienced the restrictions and isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, a group of twenty-seven blind and seventeen sighted people took part in a survey addressing how COVID-19 impacted life practically and psychologically, how it affected their daily habits, and how it changed their experiences of themselves and others. Results demonstrated that both sighted and blind individuals had a hard time adapting to the new situation. However, while sighted people struggled more with personal and social aspects, the frustration of the blind population derived mostly from more practical and logistical issues. Likely as consequences, results showed that blind people engaged more in their inner life and experienced fear and anger as main emotions. This study suggests that changes in life associated with COVID-19 have been subjectively experienced differently based on the presence or not of blindness, and that tailored future interventions should be considered to take care of the different needs of blind individuals.

Abstract
Purpose In patients with ophthalmic disorders, psychosocial risk factors play an important role in morbidity and mortality. Proper and early psychiatric screening can result in prompt intervention and mitigate its impact. Because screening is resource intensive, we developed a framework for automating screening using an electronic health record (EHR)-derived artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. Methods Subjects came from the Duke Ophthalmic Registry, a retrospective EHR database for the Duke Eye Center. Inclusion criteria included at least two encounters and a minimum of 1 year of follow-up. Presence of distress was defined at the encounter level using a computable phenotype. Risk factors included available EHR history. At each encounter, risk factors were used to discriminate psychiatric status. Model performance was evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the precision-recall curve (PR AUC). Variable importance was presented using odds ratios (ORs). Results Our cohort included 358,135 encounters from 40,326 patients with an average of nine encounters per patient over 4 years. The ROC and PR AUC were 0.91 and 0.55, respectively. Of the top 25 predictors, the majority were related to existing distress, but some indicated stressful conditions, including chemotherapy (OR = 1.36), esophageal disorders (OR = 1.31), central pain syndrome (OR = 1.25), and headaches (OR = 1.24). Conclusions Psychiatric distress in ophthalmology patients can be monitored passively using an AI algorithm trained on existing EHR data. Translational Relevance When paired with an effective referral and treatment program, such algorithms may improve health outcomes in ophthalmology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cord blood platelet lysate (CB-PL) and cord blood platelet poor plasma (CB-PPP) have been applied with success in wound healing applications. Pathologies such as Sjogrens's Syndrome (SS) and chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) can lead to severe ophthalmology issues. The application of CB-PL and CB-PPP may be strongly considered for damaged cornea healing. This study aimed to the evaluation of the beneficial properties of CB-PL and CB-PPP in corneal wound healing applications. METHODS Initially, the CB-PL and CB-PPP were produced from donated cord blood units (CBUs), followed by biochemical analysis. Corneal epithelial cells (CECs) were isolated from wistar rats and then cultured with medium containing 20% v/v either of CB-PL or CB-PPP. To define the impact of CB-PL and CB-PPP, biochemical, morphological analysis, scratch-wound assays, and immunoassays in CECs were performed. RESULTS CB-PL and CB-PPP were characterized by good biochemical parameters, regarding their quality characteristics and biomolecule content. CECs' morphological features did not change after their cultivation with CB-PL or CB-PPP. A scratch wound assay and molecular analysis of CECs expanded with CB-PL indicated higher migratory capacity compared to those cultured with CB-PPP. CONCLUSION CB-PL and CB-PPP exhibited good properties with respect to cell migration and proliferation, and could be considered an alternative source for eye drop production, to possibly be used in cornea wound healing applications.

Abstract
We aim to investigate the association of mood disorders with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This retrospective cohort study used data from 2000 and 2016 from National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. Patients with AMD diagnosis formed the exposed group, and an age- and sex-matched group without AMD served as the nonexposed group. Main outcomes were the incidence of mood disorders including psychological counseling, behavior therapy, sleep or anxiety-related disorders, and major depressive disorders (MDDs) in the exposed and non-exposed groups. The Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to evaluate the incidence and adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of mood disorders. A total of 5916 and 11,832 individuals with and without AMD were enrolled into the exposed and nonexposed groups. There were 1017 (17.19%) and 1366 (11.54%) episodes of mood disorders occurred in the exposed and nonexposed groups, respectively. The aHRs of any psychological counseling, behavioral therapy, sleep or anxiety-related disorders, and MDD were significantly higher in patients with AMD than in those without AMD (all P < 0.05). Besides, patients with dry-AMD, participants aged 50-70 years, and women with AMD had a higher incidence of mood disorders (all P < 0.05) than did non-AMD individuals, patients > 70 years, and women without AMD. In conclusion, AMD occurrence leads to an increased rate of mood disorders, particularly among those with dry-AMD, middle aged participants (aged 50-70), and women.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface causing severe discomfort, mild ocular irritation, fatigue, pain, visual disturbance, and foreign body sensation. Stress, depression, and sleep disorders are risk factors for DED. We aimed to investigate the association between DED symptoms and composite factors related to mental health (combined sleep duration, psychological stress perception, and history of depressed mood) in Korean adults aged ≥ 20 years in a population-based study using the 2010-2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Symptoms of DED and data on mental health were obtained using questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association between mental health and DED, and adjusted for possible covariates. Subjects with symptoms of DED were more likely to experience short sleep duration, psychological stress perception, and a history of depressed mood [odds ratio (OR) = 1.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06-1.90; OR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.37-2.14; and OR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.06-1.77, respectively] even after correcting for demographic factors, lifestyle factors, and medical factors. Additionally, participants with symptoms of DED were more likely to experience composite factors related to mental health (OR = 1.91, 95% CI 1.07-3.39). Therefore, ophthalmologists may report difficulties in both sleep and mental health in patients with DED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND More than 2 billion people are thought to be living with some form of vision impairment worldwide. Yet relatively little is known about the wider impacts of vision loss on individual health and well-being, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study estimated the associations between all-cause vision impairment and self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression among older adults in Kogi State, Nigeria. METHODS Individual eyes were examined according to the standard Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness methodology, and anxiety and depression were assessed using the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning-Enhanced. The associations were estimated using multivariable logistic regression models, adding two- and three-way interaction terms to test whether these differed for gender subgroups and with age. RESULTS Overall, symptoms of either anxiety or depression, or both, were worse among people with severe visual impairment or blindness compared with those with no impairment (OR=2.72, 95% CI 1.86 to 3.99). Higher levels of anxiety and/or depression were observed among men with severe visual impairment and blindness compared with women, and this gender gap appeared to widen as people got older. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest a substantial mental health burden among people with vision impairment in LMICs, particularly older men, underscoring the importance of targeted policies and programmes addressing the preventable causes of vision impairment and blindness.

Abstract
QUESTION Given that depression and anxiety can be comorbid to several treatable eye diseases, it is paramount to understand whether vitreous opacities are also associated with increased risk of well-being and mental health problems. The current systematic review summarises research examining psychological implications of vitreous opacities in adult patients. STUDY SELECTION AND ANALYSIS PubMed, Cochrane library, EMBASE, Global Health, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Science Direct were systematically searched for all articles published up to May 5th 2021. Inclusion criteria included studies that have assessed outcomes related to patients' mental health; well-being; quality of life; coping with the disease; studies exploring patients' experiences/perceptions/cognitions of illness and/or medical treatments related to vitreous opacities. FINDINGS 5 studies were included in this review, with a total of 139 patients [278 eyes] assessed. Patients' age ranged from 32 to 78 years old. Compared with healthy controls, patients with vitreous opacities showed significantly higher levels of symptoms of depression, perceived stress, state anxiety, and trait anxiety. Studies also suggested that patients are more likely to show low vision-related quality of life, and social functioning. Studies also suggested a significant positive effect of medical treatments [e.g. pars plana victretomy] on patients' symptoms of depression and anxiety and on patients' vision-related quality of life. CONCLUSIONS The topic of psychological implications of vitreous opacities is still relatively new in the literature with very preliminary evidence of mental health problems and reduced quality of life associated with this condition.

Abstract
ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the relationship between dry eye disease (DED) and anxiety, as well as DED and depression. Additionally, the influence of health anxiety (HA) on this relationship was determined.MethodsA total of 206 patients with DED were recruited from Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital clinic and surveyed using demographic questionnaires, the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI). Additionally, they were examined using Keratograph 5M and assessed for DED by corneal fluorescein staining. Regression analysis and the bootstrap method were used to investigate the influence of HA on the relationship between DED and emotional disorders.ResultsAmong the 206 patients with DED, 52 (25.24%) and 56 (27.18%) patients showed depression and anxiety, respectively. The OSDI score and HA were positively correlated with depression and anxiety (P < 0.01). The direct effects of OSDI on depression and anxiety were significant (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.017–0.069; 0.008–0.060). Additionally, the bootstrap test showed significant mediating effects of HA (95% CI: 0.001–0.016; 0.003–0.021). The results suggested that the severity of DED symptoms, as measured by the OSDI score, affected anxiety and depression by a direct and an indirect pathway mediated by HA.ConclusionsWe found a significant correlation between DED and anxiety and depression. Moreover, HA was a mediator of the relationship between DED symptoms and anxiety and depression.

Visual impairment and psychological distress among adults attending the University of Gondar tertiary eye care and training center, Northwest Ethiopia: A comparative cross-sectional study. Abstract
Background Visual impairment can severely affect the quality of life, with a tremendous negative impact on job performance and socioeconomic status. This substantially affects the psychological status of people with visual impairment. Objective This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with psychological distress among visually impaired Ethiopian adults attending the University of Gondar Tertiary Eye Care and Training Center. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Tertiary Eye Care and Training Center in Gondar City, northwest Ethiopia. A total of 206 adults with visual impairment (a presenting VA ≤ 6/18 in at least one eye) and 206 adults with normal vision were included in the study. Psychological distress was measured using a standardized self-reporting questionnaire (SRQ-20). Chi-square and binary logistic regression analysis were performed. Variables with a P-value of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results The overall prevalence of psychological distress in the study participants was 31.07% (95% CI: 26.2, 35.8). Psychological distress was higher (43.2%; 95% CI: 36.5, 50.5) and statistically differed (p = 0.02) in visually impaired compared to adults with normal vision (18.9%; 95% CI: 14.1, 24.3). Duration of vision loss ≥ 2 years (AOR = 8.70; 95% CI: 2.38, 31.46), sudden loss of vision (AOR = 3.50; 95% CI: 1.10, 18.30), unmarried (AOR = 5.53; 95% CI: 1.66, 18.43), living lonely (AOR = 8.40; 95% CI:1.48, 4.74), College and above educational status (AOR = 2.50; 95% CI:1.47, 10.61), and loss of vision in both eyes (AOR = 1.70; 95% CI: 2.00, 14.10) were variables with a significant association with psychological distress among visually impaired adults. Conclusion This study revealed that the prevalence of psychological distress was significantly higher among visually impaired adults than among adults with normal vision. The effect of visual impairment on psychological distress was significantly related to marital status, living arrangements, educational status, duration of vision loss, pattern of vision loss, and laterality of vision loss.

Abstract
The current study examines the potential moderating effect of depression and anxiety on the relationship between visual acuity and health-related quality of life in patients with chronic eye diseases. Of the 71 patients, 37 (52%) were female and 34 (48%) were male, age (mean ± SD) was 69 ± 12 years. A significant multivariate regression model was found for patients' health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L index) (R2 = 0.43, p < 0.001), in which visual acuity (logMAR) (p < 0.001), anxiety (HADS-A) (p = 0.007), and age of diagnosis (p = 0.04) were independently associated with health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L). The moderation model for anxiety (R2 = 0.47, F = 5.91, p < 0.001) revealed a significant interaction of visual acuity and levels of anxiety in relation to health-related quality of life. Conditional effects analysis suggested that higher logMAR values (which indicate more vision loss) were associated with lower EQ-5D-5L index (indicating worse health-related quality of life), this relationship being stronger (even more negative), when levels of anxiety are high. Clinical and rehabilitation services providing care for chronic eye disease patients should include regular checks for patients' levels of anxiety, even in patients who still have preserved visual acuity, to help preventing a synergistic source of long-term poor quality of life and disability.

Abstract
To investigate neuromodulation of functional and directional connectivity features in both visual and non-visual brain cortices after short-term and long-term retinal electrical stimulation in retinal degeneration mice. We performed spontaneous electrocorticography (ECoG) in retinal degeneration (rd) mice following prolonged transcorneal electrical stimulation (pTES) at varying currents (400, 500 and 600 μA) and different time points (transient or day 1 post-stimulation, 1-week post-stimulation and 2-weeks post-stimulation). We also set up a sham control group of rd mice which did not receive any electrical stimulation. Subsequently we analyzed alterations in cross-frequency coupling (CFC), coherence and directional connectivity of the primary visual cortex and the prefrontal cortex. It was observed that the sham control group did not display any significant changes in brain connectivity across all stages of electrical stimulation. For the stimulated groups, we observed that transient electrical stimulation of the retina did not significantly alter brain coherence and connectivity. However, for 1-week post-stimulation, we identified enhanced increase in theta-gamma CFC. Meanwhile, enhanced coherence and directional connectivity appeared predominantly in theta, alpha and beta oscillations. These alterations occurred in both visual and non-visual brain regions and were dependent on the current amplitude of stimulation. Interestingly, 2-weeks post-stimulation demonstrated long-lasting enhancement in network coherence and connectivity patterns at the level of cross-oscillatory interaction, functional connectivity and directional inter-regional communication between the primary visual cortex and prefrontal cortex. Application of electrical stimulation to the retina evidently neuromodulates brain coherence and connectivity of visual and non-visual cortices in retinal degeneration mice and the observed alterations are largely maintained. pTES holds strong possibility of modulating higher cortical functions including pathways of cognition, awareness, emotion and memory.

Abstract
Objective To assess a novel eyelid pressure measurement device and study the relationship between eyelid pressure and ocular surface parameters of moderate-to-severe dry eye disease (DED). Methods The present study included 70 eyes of 35 moderate-to-severe DED patients. All subjects were subjected to the following examinations for DED assessment: Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer thickness (LLT), number of partial blink (PB), total blink (TB) and partial blink rate (PBR), fluorescein tear breakup time (FBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), lid margin abnormality, meibum expression assessment (meibum score), meibomian gland dropout (MGd) and Schirmer I test. Pressure of the upper eyelid was measured thrice with the novel pressure measurement device. Repeatability of the device was evaluated by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Safety of the device was evaluated by observing ocular adverse reactions of each subject prior to measurement, at day 1 and day 7 following measurement. Correlations between eyelid pressure and ocular surface parameters of moderate-to-severe DED were analyzed by using Pearson correlation coefficient and Kendall's tau-b correlation coefficient. Results ICC of the measurement results in our study was 0.86. There was no abnormality presenting in all subjects recorded prior to measurement, 1 and 7 days following measurement. The eyelid pressure was significantly correlated with PBR (r = 0.286, P = 0.016), FBUT (r = −0.331, P = 0.005), CFS (r = 0.528, P = 0.000), lid margin abnormality (r = 0.408, P = 0.011) and MGd (r = 0.226, P = 0.016) in moderate-to-severe DED patients, but not significantly correlated with OSDI score (r = 0.016, P = 0.912), TMH (r = −0.002, P = 0.988), meibum score (r = −0.196, P = 0.317), LLT (r = 0.114, P = 0.346), PB (r = 0.116, P = 0.338), TB (r = 0.074, P = 0.544), meibum score (r = −0.196, P = 0.317) and Schirmer I test (r = 0.028, P = 0.821). Conclusion The novel pressure measurement device exhibited good repeatability and safety in measuring eyelid pressure. Significant correlations were noted between the eyelid pressure and PBR, FBUT, CFS, lid margin abnormality and MGd in moderate-to-severe DED. The measurement of eyelid pressure combined with ocular surface parameters may be valuable for the assessment of DED.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of astaxanthin in the treatment of mild-to-moderate dry eye disease (DED) in middle-aged and elderly patients. Methods: 120 eyes of 60 middle-aged and elderly patients with mild-to-moderate DED were enrolled in this prospective, one-group, quasi-experimental study. Six milligram Astaxanthin tablets (Weihong Haematococcus Pluvialis Astaxanthin, Hangzhou Xinwei Low Carbon Technology R&D Co., Ltd., China) were administered orally, twice daily for 30 ± 2 days. History of eye diseases, treatment, systemic disease, and medication before the test were recorded. In addition, the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), fluorescein break-up time (FBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) score, eyelid margin signs, meibomian gland (MG) expressibility, meibum quality, meibomian gland dropout (MGDR), Schirmer I test (SIt), tear meniscus height (TMH), bulbar conjunctiva congestion degree, blink frequency, incomplete blink rate, and thickness of tear film lipid layer were collected before treatment, 2 weeks after the initiation of treatment, and at the end of treatment. Visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior segment, fundus, discomfort symptoms and other adverse reactions were also monitored throughout the study to assess the safety. Results: OSDI score, NIBUT, BUT, CFS score, eyelid margin signs, MG expressibility, meibum quality, and blink frequency improved significantly to varying degrees after treatment compared with those before the treatment (P < 0.05), while TMH, SIt, conjunctival congestion, the thickness of tear film lipid layer, MGDR, incomplete blink rate, VA and IOP did not differ (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Oral administration of astaxanthin improves the symptoms and signs of middle-aged and elderly patients with mild-to-moderate DED.
