Abstract
Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) is a significant and highly prevalent condition affecting up to 48% of individuals with irregular work schedules. The diagnostic criteria for SWSD include persistent insomnia or sleepiness in relation to shift work, not attributable to other disorders or external factors. To explore risk factors of SWSD, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis among 10,787 night shift workers in the UK Biobank. To determine correlates of SWSD using multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models, a preselection of potential risk factors was made on the basis of previous literature. Self-identifying as 'Asian or Asian British' or 'Black or Black British' (compared to being 'White'), male sex, and high scores on sociability, warmth and diligence were associated with lower odds for SWSD. We did not find significant associations of chronotype, frequency of alcohol intake, smoking, and time employed in current job with SWSD. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and workplace policies to mitigate the adverse effects of SWSD. Future research should aim to explore the mechanisms behind these associations and develop strategies to enhance shift work tolerance among night shift workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the relationship between occupational noise, shift work and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in male workers in the automobile manufacturing industry. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING This study was carried out at the Guangzhou Twelfth People's Hospital using data from April to September 2022. PARTICIPANTS A total of 4672 eligible participants were included in the study. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Diagnosis of NAFLD was made using ultrasound. Noise was detected according to the Measurement of Physical Factors in the Workplace-Part 8: Noise. Environmental noise intensity was assessed using an EDGE personal noise dosimeter manufactured by CASELLA (UK). The working status of workers was investigated by questionnaire. RESULTS The OR of NAFLD was 1.39 (1.03, 1.88) in the cumulative noise exposure (CNE)≥95 group compared with CNE<85 group. Improved risk of NAFLD in workers with shift work compared with those without shift work (OR=1.35, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.68). As stratified analyses showed, the ORs of NAFLD prevalence related to occupational noise and shift work exposure appear to be increased in young workers. When both shift work and noise exposure work are present simultaneously, the synergy index between them was 0.47 (95% CI: 0.25, 0.89). Combined effects analysis revealed that the OR of NAFLD was 2.02 (95% CI: 1.34, 2.99) in CNE≥95 and cumulative length of night shifts work>2920 hours. CONCLUSION Occupational noise exposure may be an independent risk factor for NAFLD. It may synergistically affect disease when combined with night shift work, particularly among younger workers. These findings underscore the importance for companies to prioritise the management and training of younger workers, along with targeted occupational health education initiatives, as crucial measures for reducing the incidence of NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses face significant risks of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), which adversely affects workplace safety and productivity. Yet, the extent of EDS in this workforce remains inadequately characterized. AIM The aims of this systematic review were to assess the pooled prevalence of EDS among nurses. METHODOLOGY We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science for observational studies reporting the prevalence of EDS, as measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), from database inception to May 1, 2024, with no language restrictions. Study quality was evaluated using JBI's critical appraisal tool. Pooled estimates were calculated through random-effects meta-analysis, with subgroup and meta-regression analyses assessing associations between EDS prevalence and study-level factors. Linear regression modeling was used to assess time trends. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024535109). RESULTS We included 36 unique studies encompassing 2677 nurses from 20 countries. EDS occurred in 14.0%-55.6% of nurses. The results of the meta-analysis showed a pooled prevalence of EDS of 32.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 28.5-36.1; I2 = 92.6). Prevalence estimate did not vary substantially in terms of study-level data (i.e., region, country income, pre/post covid era, hospital type, proportion of female nurse, average nursing experience, or proportion of married nurses). The prevalence of EDS in nurses has remained unchanged over time. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis identifies a high global prevalence of EDS among nurses, affecting nearly one-third of this workforce. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to mitigate EDS across diverse geographic and economic contexts. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY This study highlights the pervasive issue of EDS among nurses worldwide, necessitating comprehensive strategies to address this challenge across all regions, income levels, hospital settings, and demographic groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Work-family conflicts and daytime sleepiness are related to the risk of suicide. At present, no study has investigated the relationship between nurses' work-family behavioral role conflict and suicide risk. Moreover, it has not been confirmed whether, considering the effect of daytime sleepiness on suicide risk, daytime sleepiness mediates the effect of work-family behavioral role conflict and suicide risk. AIM To explore the pathway relationships among nurses' work-family behavioral role conflict, daytime sleepiness, and suicide risk. METHODS Convenience and purposive sampling methods were used to select 750 nurses from six provinces, including Jiangxi, Sichuan, and Shanxi. The work-family behavioral role conflict scale, the Chinese adult daytime sleepiness scale, and the suicide behavior questionnaire were used for the survey. The data were statistically analyzed via SPSS 25.0 software, Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the correlations between the variables, the PROCESS 4.0 program was used for the mediation effect analysis, and the mediation effect model was tested via the bootstrap method. RESULTS Nurses' work-family behavioral role conflict and daytime sleepiness were positively correlated with suicide risk (r = 734, 0.717). Work-family behavioral role conflict positively predicted suicide risk (β = 0.118), and daytime sleepiness positively predicted suicide risk (β = 0.152). Daytime sleepiness partially mediated the role of nurses' work-family behavioral role conflict and suicide risk, with a mediation effect value of 0.046 and a mediation effect accounting for 38.98%. CONCLUSION The results of the Pearson correlation analysis and mediation effect analysis revealed that nurses' work-family behavioral role conflict has a direct effect on suicide risk and indirectly affects suicide risk through daytime drowsiness symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nightmares may lead to psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). The present study aimed to examine the potential moderating and mediating effects of mental health literacy (MHL) on the association between nightmare distress (ND) and PLEs among Chinese college students. METHODS A total of 4000 college students who have had nightmares in the past year were assessed using the Chinese version of the nightmare distress questionnaire (NDQ-CV), mental health knowledge questionnaire (MHKQ), 15-item positive subscale of the community assessment of psychic experiences (CAPE-P15), 2-item insomnia questionnaire, 2-item patient health questionnaire (PHQ-2), and a self-compiled sample characteristics questionnaire. RESULTS Greater ND and lower MHL were associated with an elevated risk of PLEs among college students when adjusting for sample characteristics, insomnia and depressive symptoms. Moderation analysis indicated that MHL buffers the association between ND and PLEs, such that a higher level of MHL attenuates the positive effect of ND on PLEs to a greater extent. CONCLUSIONS These findings strongly stressed the urgent need for early intervention in college students with ND. Strategies should prioritise treating ND and enhancing MHL, as these may be effective approaches to preventing and reducing PLEs.

Abstract
This study investigates the prospective associations between short sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) in a large sample of Chinese adolescents. This study utilized a three-timepoint repeated cross-sectional survey with two nested longitudinal subsamples. A total of 17,722 adolescents were assessed at baseline (April 21 to May 12, 2021) and six months later (December 17 to 26, 2021). Out of these, 15,694 adolescents provided complete responses to the questions at baseline and one year later (May 17 - June 6, 2022). A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure sample characteristics (at baseline), sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, and PLEs (at each assessment), and negative life events (at two follow-ups). Baseline short sleep duration and insomnia symptoms predicted frequent PLEs at both follow-up assessments. Additionally, baseline frequent PLEs also predicted insomnia symptoms at six months and one year later. However, when controlling for confounders, PLEs at baseline only predicted short sleep duration at six months, and not at one year. This study reveals bidirectional prospective relationships between short sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, and PLEs, even after controlling for covariates. Therefore, it is crucial to assess both sleep patterns and PLEs in order to promote optimal sleep and mental health among adolescents.

Abstract
Circadian rhythm-related individual differences such as chronotypes (morningness/eveningness) are associated with mental health though not elucidated in circadian-disrupted populations such as flight attendants. International flight attendants (n = 288) aged 21 to 55 (70.8% female, 76.4% white) completed an online survey assessing chronotypes, attachment, depression, and anxiety to investigate the associations between these variables. Results showed a prevalence of intermediate (41.6%) and evening types (40.6%). Evening chronotype was associated with and significantly predicted depression but not anxiety. Individuals who scored higher in attachment anxiety or avoidance had higher levels of depression and anxiety. Exploratory mediation showed that attachment avoidance partially mediated the relationship between anxiety and depression. Overall, chronotypes and attachment are implied as transdiagnostic factors for mental health outcomes and highlighted using a Chrono-Attachment Health Model. Further research is needed to confirm these findings among flight attendants and shift workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous research has extensively explored the factors associated with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). However, the characteristics and associated factors of remitted PLEs, which refer to the absence of current PLEs following previous PLEs, remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to describe the characteristics of adolescents who reported remitted PLEs. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING The survey was conducted from October to December 2020 in three colleges located in Guangzhou, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 4208 college freshmen aged from 15 to 24 participated in our survey. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The 15-item positive subscale of the Community Assessment of the Psychic Experience was used to assess both lifetime and current PLEs. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between remitted PLEs and a range of demographic factors, lifestyle, psychosocial factors, lifetime affective symptoms and sleep problems. RESULTS Three groups of PLEs were observed: non-PLEs (47.27% of the sample), remitted PLEs (40.42%) and current PLEs (12.31%). Several factors have been identified as shared correlates of remission and absence of PLEs, including fewer recent adverse life events, greater resilience, fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, and early waking. Furthermore, higher levels of social support (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.17; OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.97) was a specific factor associated with the remission of PLEs. Compared with individuals without PLEs, those with remitted PLEs were more likely to be female (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.28 to 1.75), less likely to be younger (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.81 to 0.95) and prone to have more chronic physical illness (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.29 to 2.16), habitual alcohol intake (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.19 to 2.88), more childhood trauma (OR for low vs high=0.72, 95% CI 0.57 to 0.91) and the sleep problems of waking up easily (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.65). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that remitted PLEs play a vital, unique role among three groups and provide preliminary targets for the intervention for adolescents at risk of mental health problems. Further investigation may shed light on the causality of the relationship between remitted PLEs and associated factors.

Abstract
Shift work tolerance (SWT) refers to the ability to adapt to shift work without significant adverse consequences. The present study aimed to examine the individual differences in SWT and their predictors and outcomes. Latent profile analyses were conducted using cross-sectional data collected form 448 Chinese male sailors who experienced a prolonged (>30 d) non-24-h rotating shift schedule at sea. Depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, fatigue, domestic disruption, job satisfaction, work engagement, digestive and cardiovascular symptoms were included as indicators of SWT. The results showed that there existed 2 latent profiles of SWT named as High SWT group and Low SWT group. High SWT group was characterized by low levels on all negative bio-psycho-social outcomes but high levels of work engagement and job satisfaction, while Low SWT group exhibited completely opposite characteristics compared to High SWT group. The level of hardiness could predict profile membership that those with higher level of hardiness were more likely to belong to High SWT group. However, there were no significant differences observed in job performance between two groups. In conclusion, hardiness can serve as a predictor of personnel selection for shift work and hardiness-based intervention programs should be encouraged among the shift workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Shift work and Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) are known to affect the secretion of several neurotransmitters and hormones associated with premature ejaculation (PE). However, their specific influence on the regulation of male ejaculation remains unclear. This study explores the relationship between shift work, SWSD, and PE. METHODS From April to October 2023, a cross-sectional survey was conducted across five regions of China to explore the work schedules, sleep quality, and sexual function of male workers. Participants' sleep quality was evaluated using a validated SWSD questionnaire, and their erectile function and ejaculatory control were assessed with the International Inventory of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) scores and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) scores, respectively. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were employed to identify risk factors associated with PE. Confounders were controlled using multiple regression models, and clinical prediction models were developed to predict PE onset and assess the contribution of risk factors. RESULTS The study included 1239 eligible participants, comprising 840 non-shift workers and 399 shift workers (148 with SWSD and 251 without SWSD). Compared to non-shift working males, those involved in shift work (β 1.58, 95% CI 0.75 - 2.42, p < 0.001) and those suffering from SWSD (β 2.86, 95% CI 1.86 - 3.85, p < 0.001) they had significantly higher PEDT scores. Additionally, we identified daily sleep of less than six hours, depression, anxiety, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, frequent alcohol consumption (more than twice a week), and erectile dysfunction as risk factors for PE. The predictive model for PE demonstrated commendable efficacy. CONCLUSION Both shift work and SWSD significantly increase the risk of premature ejaculation, with the risk magnifying in tandem with the duration of shift work. This study reveals the potential impact of shift work and SWSD on PE and provides new theoretical foundations for the risk assessment and prevention of this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence and correlates of social jetlag (SJL) in Chinese adolescents, as well as to test the relationships between SJL and mental health problems. METHODS A total of 106979 students (Mage = 13.0 ± 1.8 years; Nmale = 58296 [54.5 %]) from Shenzhen, China completed an online survey from May 24th to June 5th, 2022. Information on sociodemographics, lifestyles, sleep characteristics, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms was collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariate and binary logistic regression were adopted for data analysis. RESULTS 17.8 % of participants experienced SJL ≥ 2 h. To adjust the accumulated sleep debt, sleep-corrected SJL (SJLsc) was calculated and 8.3 % of individuals self-reported SJLsc ≥ 2 h. Both SJL and SJLsc show an increasing trend with age. Risk factors of SJL included females, poor parental marital status, being overweight, physically inactive, smoking, drinking, and having a late chronotype. Moreover, males, having siblings, boarding at school, short sleep duration, experiencing insomnia, and frequent nightmares were significantly associated with an increased risk of SJLsc. After adjusting for all covariates, adolescents with SJLsc ≥ 2 h were more likely to have anxiety symptoms (OR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.24-1.48) and depressive symptoms (OR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.25-1.46) than those with SJLsc < 1 h. CONCLUSIONS SJL is common among Chinese school-age adolescents. This study is valuable for the development of prevention and intervention strategies for SJL in adolescents at the population level. Additionally, the strong links between SJLsc and emotional problems underscore the critical significance of addressing SJL as a key aspect of adolescent well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While negative life events (NLEs) have been linked to an increased risk of sleep disturbance among adolescents, the mechanisms of this impact still lack further examination. The current study aimed to explore whether intolerance of uncertainty (IU), a dispositional transdiagnostic vulnerability factor for psychopathology, could act as a mediator and/or moderator in the link from NLEs to sleep disturbance. METHODS A longitudinal nested subsample of 54,240 Chinese adolescents (aged 9-19) were surveyed at baseline (Timepoint 1) and six months later (Timepoint 2). They completed questionnaires to assess their IU, NLEs, sleep disturbance and sociodemographic characteristics. Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted to test our hypotheses. RESULTS Upon adjusting for covariates, IU was found to mediate the relationship between NLEs and residual changes in sleep disturbance over a six-month period, with the mediation effect accounting for 31.8%. Additionally, the moderating role of IU in this relationship was also identified, suggesting that a high level of IU exacerbated the effect of NLEs on sleep disturbance. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, our findings shed light on the dual roles of IU in the link from NLEs to sleep disturbance, holding significant practical implications for preventing and intervening in sleep disturbance among adolescents. To mitigate the risk of sleep disturbance among adolescents experiencing NLEs, timely assessments of IU and tailored interventions to enhance uncertainty tolerance are necessary.

Abstract
Shift workers support critical 24-hr operations; their health can be impaired by disrupted circadian rhythms and dysfunctional sleep. Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) is a prevalent condition with significant psychological consequences. Nurse leaders have not yet implemented effective policies to prevent SWSD and optimize shift workers' mental health. The purpose of this integrative review was to examine research about SWSD within the context of neurobiological, sociological, and psychological perspectives that can inform policy changes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Policy Analytic Framework was used to determine the priority recommendations. A search of three databases provided 19 research articles about SWSD and mental health, which illustrated how SWSD is common around the world in many occupations. Backward-rotating schedules and quick returns were risk factors for SWSD. In addition, SWSD was associated with circadian languidity, sleep reactivity, depressive symptoms, and anxiety. Collectively, the studies lacked objective measures of sleep and circadian rhythms, which has hindered the ability to devise interventions that will target the neurobiological causes of SWSD. The research also lacked attention to important sociological factors, such as workers' pay and benefits. Using these findings, nurse leaders can contribute to public policy reforms that increase funding for more rigorous SWSD research. Lawmakers should be advised by nurse leaders to enforce new regulations that provide incentives for employers to create healthier workplaces, such as prohibiting the overuse of schedules that make employees vulnerable to SWSD and providing funds for interventions to prevent SWSD and support mental health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep disturbance is prevalent among adolescents but little is known about the short-term changes among Chinese adolescents. The study aimed to explore the prevalence and change patterns of sleep disturbance and identify its risk and protective factors. METHODS Data were collected online from April 21st to May 12th, 2021 (Time 1, T1) and December 17th to 26th, 2021 (Time 2, T2). The final sample comprised 34,260 adolescents. Self-administrated questionnaires were used to assess socio-demographic variables, sleep disturbance, depression, anxiety, life events, family function, and resilience. RESULTS The prevalence of sleep disturbance was 12.0% at T1 and 11.8% at T2, with higher rates in females than males. Four groups of sleep disturbance change patterns were identified: non-sleep disturbance group (80.4%), persistent group (4.2%), new-onset group (7.6%), and remission group (7.8%). Risk factors for new-onset sleep disturbance included being in junior high school (AOR = 1.26, 95%CI = 1.15-1.38), family history of mental disorders (AOR = 1.49, 95%CI = 1.03-2.15), and moderate (AOR = 1.24, 95%CI = 1.13-1.36) and severe (AOR = 1.48, 95%CI = 1.27-1.72) family dysfunction. Risk factors for persistent sleep disturbance included being in junior (AOR = 1.25, 95%CI = 1.08-1.45) and senior (AOR = 1.53, 95%CI = 1.15-2.03) high school, parental currently unmarried status (AOR = 1.34, 95%CI = 1.05-1.73), moderate (AOR = 1.19, 95%CI = 1.02-1.39) and severe (AOR = 1.28, 95%CI = 1.06-1.55) family dysfunction. Medium (AOR = 0.48, 95%CI = 0.43-0.53) and high (AOR = 0.34, 95%CI = 0.29-0.40) levels of resilience were protective factors against new-onset sleep disturbance, as well as against persistent sleep disturbance (medium level: AOR = 0.51, 95%CI = 0.43-0.60; high level: AOR = 0.32, 95%CI = 0.25-0.43). CONCLUSIONS Interventions aimed at promoting family functions and enhancing resilience may improve sleep disturbance among adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shift work is inevitable for nurses in intensive care units. Various studies explored nurses' fatigue in multiple hospital wards. However, few studies focused on fatigue among nurses in intensive care units. AIMS To determine the association between shift work schedules, compensatory sleep, work-family conflict, and fatigue of shift-working nurses in critical care units. STUDY DESIGN A descriptive cross-sectional multi-center study was conducted in March 2022 among intensive care nurses from five hospitals. METHODS Data were collected by online survey, including self-designed demographic questions, the Fatigue Scale-14, the Chinese adult daytime sleepiness scale, and the work-family scale. Pearson correlation was conducted for bivariate analysis. Independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to examine fatigue-related variables. RESULTS A total of 326 nurses responded to the survey with an effective response rate of 74.9%. The mean scores of physical fatigue and mental fatigue were 6.80 and 3.72, respectively. The bivariate analyses showed that work-family conflict was positively correlated with physical (r = 0.483, p < .001) and mental fatigue (r = 0.406, p < .001). Multiple linear regression results showed that work-family conflict, daytime sleepiness, and shift system were statistically significant factors influencing physical fatigue (F = 41.793, p < .001). Work-family conflict, sleep duration after the night shift, and daytime sleepiness were the main influencing factors of mental fatigue (F = 25.105, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Nurses with higher work-family conflict, daytime sleepiness, and working 12-h shifts have higher levels of physical fatigue. Higher work-family conflict, shorter sleep duration after night shifts, and daytime sleepiness are associated with higher mental fatigue among intensive care nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Nursing managers and nurses should consider work-family factors and compensatory sleep in their efforts to reduce fatigue. It is necessary to strengthen work-supporting strategies and compensatory sleep guidance for nurses to promote fatigue recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nearly 0.7 billion workers are involved in the shift work system, leading to concerns about its potential impacts on the large-scale population mental health. This study aimed to synthesise evidence of the associations between matched chronotype and the risk of poor mental health among shift workers. METHODS Six computerised databases were searched from inception to September 2022. Observational studies were selected if they reported any association between common mental health parameters and chronotype scores/types of shift workers. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses checklist was followed. We extracted adjusted risk estimates to calculate pooled effect sizes and explore sources of heterogeneity. The study was registered in PROSPERO: CRD42022357437. RESULTS Fourteen studies including 49 909 workers were identified. Ever shift workers had a higher risk of poor mental health than the day workers (pooled OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.28; I2=14%, p=0.29), with the evening chronotype ever shift workers having a 1.47 times higher risk than those who worked during the day (pooled OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.91; I2=42%, p=0.16). Sensitivity analysis excluding studies with the highest risk of bias of each group demonstrated consistent findings. CONCLUSIONS Evening chronotype ever shift workers have poorer mental health than shift workers with other chronotypes. Chronotype remains unrecognised in the contemporary rostering system, making it a hidden contributor to occupational mental health. Work-related physical and mental stresses may be prevented/mitigated with further investigation on optimising shift work schedule combined with individual chronotype preference.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the associations of social jetlag and insomnia symptoms with depressive symptoms among adolescents. METHODS A total of 37,871 junior high students completed an online survey between May 24th and Jun 5th, 2022. Insomnia symptoms were assessed by three items based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria. Social jetlag and depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire and the Patient Health Questionnaire, respectively. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the relationship between social jetlag and depressive symptoms. Joint effects of social jetlag and insomnia symptoms on depressive symptoms were estimated using additive interaction models. RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 13.1%. Depressive symptoms were more common in adolescents with social jetlag ≥2 h (OR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.39-1.65) and insomnia symptoms (OR: 6.91, 95% CI: 6.41-7.44). There was a J-shaped relationship between social jetlag and depressive symptoms when we took social jetlag as a continuous variable. Moreover, a positive additive interaction of social jetlag ≥2 h and insomnia symptoms on depressive symptoms was found in female adolescents (RERI: 2.30, 95% CI: 0.11-4.49). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that social jetlag ≥2 h and insomnia are related to the occurrence of depressive symptoms in adolescents. Their coexistence additively enhances the strength of the association with depressive symptoms. Early screening and intervention for insomnia, as well as methods to reduce social jetlag, should be comprised as part of preventive strategies for depression in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of night-shift work on the risk of hypertension for improving workers' health. METHODS A total of 10,038 Chinese participants were constituted in the cross-sectional study. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were used to estimate the effect of night shift on hypertension. RESULTS There were higher odds of having hypertension in any night-shift workers (odds ratio [OR], 1.16 [95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.30]) when compared with day workers. Having 5 to 10 night shifts per month were significantly more likely to be hypertensive (OR, 1.19 [95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.38]). The OR for hypertension increased as the number of night shifts increased as the result of the restricted cubic spline. CONCLUSIONS Our results support the hypothesis that night shift is associated with an elevated risk of hypertension.

Abstract
Aim Sleep disturbance was closely associated with an increased risk of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). This study aims to explore the association between sleep disturbance and PLEs among urban adolescents with and without parental migration. Methods A total of 67, 532 urban Chinese adolescents were recruited in a large web-based survey during April 21st to May 12th, 2021. In our study, sleep disturbance, PLEs, family function, school climate, and a series of socio-demographic were assessed. And hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed to examine influential factors associated with PLEs. Results Urban left-behind children (LBC) had a higher prevalence of sleep disturbance and PLEs than non-LBC. After controlling for confounders, parental migration was associated to PLEs with weak significance (OR = 1.19). Meanwhile, sleep disturbance was found to be a robust risk factor for PLEs (OR = 3.84 and 4.09), with or without the effect of parental migration. In addition, better family function and school climate has significant association with decreased risk of PLEs. Conclusion Adolescents with sleep disturbance are more likely to report PLEs. Adolescents' PLEs preventive strategies could focus on reducing sleep disturbance related symptoms as well as improving family function and school climate.

Shift work and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease incidence among Chinese rail workers: a 4-year longitudinal cohort study. Int Arch Occup Environ Health 2023; 96:179-190. Abstract
PURPOSE Occupational harmful factors, such as shift work, are attracting increasing attention as a potential cause of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this study, we aimed to identify the association between shift work and NAFLD incidence in Chinese rail population. METHODS A cohort study was conducted among 14,112 rail workers for 4-year follow-up. Shift work frequency and other potential variables were recorded by questionnaires, including demographic, lifestyle, and occupation information. Besides, body mass index, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase were measured by anthropometric measurement and blood test. Diagnosis of new NAFLD case was based on abdominal ultrasonography. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to determine whether shift work has effect on occurrence of NAFLD. RESULTS The incidence of NAFLD was 30.43% in total subjects. After adjustment for possible confounders, the RRs of NAFLD were 1.069 (95% CI 0.998-1.146) and 1.179 (95% CI 1.059-1.312) in occasionally shift work group and frequently shift work group respectively, compared to the seldom shift work group. In stratified analyses, the RRs of NAFLD incidence linked to shift work exposure seems increase among female and elder. The results of three sensitivity analyses were similar with main analysis. CONCLUSIONS This research provided further evidence of positive harmful effect of shift work on NAFLD incidence in Chinese rail workers, particularly in frequently shift work population. The risk estimate of shift work on NAFLD was higher in female and elder.

Abstract
PURPOSE Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are prevalent among adolescents and are the most significant predictor of future mental disorders. This study aims to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep disturbance and PLEs in a large cohort of adolescents. METHODS The 17,722 adolescents in our study were assessed from April 21 to May 12, 2021 (Time 1, T1) and again 6 months later from December 17 to 26, 2021 (Time 2, T2). The Youth Self Rating Insomnia Scale and 8-item Positive Subscale of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences were used to assess sleep and PLEs, respectively. Sample characteristics and depression were also evaluated at T1, and negative life events were measured at T2. Sleep duration ≤6 h per night was considered as sleep deprivation, and sleep disturbance was defined as having insomnia or poor sleep quality. RESULTS The prevalence of sleep disturbance and frequent PLEs at T1 were 14.1% and 14.5%, respectively. Sleep disturbance and sleep deprivation at T1 were significantly associated with increased risk for PLEs at T2 after adjusting for sample characteristics, depression, and negative life events. Furthermore, sleep disturbance and sleep deprivation also predicted the new onset and persistence of PLEs. CONCLUSION Sleep disturbance predicts the development and persistence of PLEs. Early assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance may therefore contribute to a comprehensive strategy for the successful prevention and treatment of PLEs in adolescents.

Abstract
A bidirectional relationship between insomnia and depression has been observed. However, few studies have used network analysis to explore the interaction patterns in that association at the symptom level. This study aimed to estimate network structures of insomnia and depressive symptoms among shift workers, as well as to compare the differences in network properties between individuals without and with insomnia symptoms and/or at risk of depression. A total of 1883 shift workers were included in our study. Insomnia symptoms were evaluated by three items based on the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and depressive symptoms were assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Network analyses were used for the statistical analysis. "Difficulty initiating sleep", "Hard to get started", and "Depressed mood" with higher expected influence (EI) values were identified as the most central symptoms within the insomnia-depressive networks among shift workers. The significant differences between individuals without and with insomnia symptoms and/or at risk of depression were observed in symptoms of "Difficulty initiating sleep" and "Hard to get started". "Depressed mood", "Difficulty initiating sleep", or "Hard to get started" were the most key symptoms that trigger and sustain the structure of insomnia and depressive symptom among shift workers. Hence, timely intervention for the above three symptoms in future research or clinical practice (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia) may be crucial in alleviating insomnia and depressive symptoms among shift workers.

Abstract
Objective Night shifts have adverse cognitive outcomes that might be attenuated by daytime napping. The neurovisceral integration model suggests that resting vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) is linked with cognitive function. This study investigated the relationship between resting vmHRV and cognitive function after different nap durations in interns after shift work. Methods A total of 105 interns were randomly allocated to one of three groups (non-nap, n = 35; 15-min nap, n = 35; 45-min nap, n = 35) to perform cognitive tests and resting vmHRV at 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00. Information processing (digit symbol substitution test; DSST), motor speed (finger tapping test; FTT), response selection (choice reaction time; CRT), and attention shifts (shifting attention test; SAT) were assessed. Resting vmHRV was assessed at baseline and during each cognitive task across groups. Results Compared with the non-nap control, the 15-min and 45-min naps improved all outcome measures (including subjective sleepiness and cognitive performance) at 15:00, with some benefits maintained at 18:00. The 15-min nap produced significantly greater benefits on the FTT at 15:00 after napping than did the 45-min nap. Resting vmHRV was significantly correlated with DSST and SAT performance. In addition, FTT performance was the only significant predictor of DSST performance across different nap durations. Conclusion Our results demonstrate links between daytime napping (in particular, a 15-min nap) and improved cognitive control in relation to autonomic activity after shift work in interns. These results indicated that autonomic activity when awake plays a crucial role in DSST and SAT performance and facilitated the understanding of differences in neurocognitive mechanisms underlying information processing after different nap durations.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the patterns and predictors of the trajectories of college students' insomnia symptoms across different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A total of 35,516 college students completed three online surveys during the COVID-19 outbreak period (3-10 February 2020), initial remission period (24 March-3 April 2020), and effective control period (1-15 June 2020), respectively. These surveys measured the participants' socio-demographic and pandemic related factors, insomnia symptoms, mental health status, and psychosocial factors. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to examine predictors for trajectory membership. RESULTS The prevalence of insomnia symptoms increases during home quarantine. Five insomnia symptoms trajectories were observed: resistance (82.8% of the sample), recovery (5.0%), delayed-dysfunction (5.8%), chronic-dysfunction (1.8%), and relapsing/remitting (4.6%). Female gender, residence location in urban, has history of sleep problems, smoking, alcohol use, community or village has confirmed COVID-19 cases, current poor mental health, higher negative coping were related to higher risk of developing insomnia symptoms in at least one time point, whereas better family function increased the possibility of recovery relative to chronic dysfunction. Lower social support and positive coping could also cause insomnia chronicity. CONCLUSION Adolescents have different trajectories of insomnia symptoms during pandemic lockdown. Although most adolescents did not experience insomnia or recovered over time, some adolescents, especially those with the risk factors noted above, exhibit delayed or chronic symptoms. These findings could inform mental health professionals regarding how to provide individualized and appropriate intervention for college students after their return to school.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance may cause psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). The present study aimed to exam their rate of co-occurrence and investigate whether resilience buffers the association. METHODS A total of 50,625 junior high school students were assessed using the self-compiled socio-demographics and sleep questionnaires, 8-item Positive Subscale of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences, 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire. RESULTS In this sample, 15.8% participants had frequent PLEs in the past month, where 40.1% exhibited comorbid sleep disturbance. Sleep disturbance positively associated with the onset of frequent PLEs, after adjusting for socio-demographics, depression and anxiety. Moderation analysis showed resilience buffers the association between sleep disturbance and PLEs, with a higher level of resilience, the positive effect of sleep disturbance on PLEs would be diminished to a greater extent. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that early attention should be drawn to adolescents with sleep disturbance. Intervention strategies should be enhancing resilience, increasing sleep duration and improving sleep quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Circadian preference and mental health disorders are closely related to insomnia. This study aimed to evaluate insomnia symptoms in textile factory workers with different work schedules, and to investigate the association between insomnia, morningness-eveningness preference, anxiety, and depression. METHODS A total of 3,883 textile workers were assessed using the 3-items of Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, Composite Scale of Morningness, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, and socio-demographic questionnaires. RESULTS The prevalence rate of insomnia in textile workers was 16.7% (N = 646), with 49.8% (N = 322) were shift workers. Among shift workers (N = 1,833), 9.5% had difficulty initiating sleep, and almost 9.0% suffered from early morning awakening, a rate significantly higher than among daytime workers. Logistics regressions revealed that work schedule was insignificantly associated with insomnia. Depression (OR = 1.034, 95% CI = 1.022-1.046) and anxiety (OR = 1.031, 95% CI = 1.018-1.043) positively predicted insomnia, whereas morningness preference (OR = 0.977, 95% CI = 0.960-0.995) decreased the likelihood of insomnia. Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that both anxiety and depression independently mediated the association between circadian preferences and insomnia in textile workers with or without shift work. CONCLUSION This study highlighted the insomnia, depression, and anxiety of textile factory workers in a Chinese textile factory. To improve insomnia symptoms, interventions to promote morningness circadian preference and reduce depressive and anxious symptoms among workers are encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Besides physical changes, elderly adults are prone to have mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance, and the pandemic of COVID-19 worsened the situation. However, internal relationships and co-occurrence of psychopathologies were scarcely examined. Therefore, in the current study, through network analysis, we inspected relationships among symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance and identified key symptoms that espoused the disease. METHODS We asked 1,302 elderly adults to fill in Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (depressive symptoms), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (anxiety symptoms), and the Youth Self-rating Insomnia Scale (sleep disturbance) and then constructed three networks for elderly adults, male elderly, and female elderly. Via network analysis, we accomplished four goals. First, we identified symptom with the highest centrality (i.e., strength) index for each network; then, we found the strongest correlation (i.e., edges) in each network; thirdly, we confirmed specific nodes that could bridge anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance; the last was to compare networks based on genders. Network stability and accuracy tests were performed. RESULTS Networks of elderly adults, male elderly, and female elderly were stable, accurate, and intelligible. Among all networks, "Nervousness"- "Excessive worry" (GAD-1- GAD-2) had the strongest correlation, and "Nervousness" (GAD-1) had the highest strength and bridge strength value. When we made a comparison between female elderly's and male elderly's networks, except for the significant difference in the mean value of "Difficulty initiating sleep" (YSIS-3), the findings showed that the two networks were similar. Network stability and accuracy proved to be reliable. CONCLUSIONS In networks of anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance, anxiety played a conspicuous role in comorbidity, which could be a target for practical intervention and prevention.

Abstract
Background: Nurses have a high incidence of shift work sleep disorder, which places their health and patient safety in danger. Thus, exploring the factors associated with shift work sleep disorder in nurses is of great significance in improving their sleep health, nursing personnel staffing, and scheduling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of shift work sleep disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the factors associated with shift work sleep disorder in Chinese nurses. Methods: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study using an online survey. Stratified cluster sampling was used to include 4,275 nurses from 14 hospitals in Shandong, China from December 2020 to June 2021. Stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis and random forest were used to identify the factors associated with shift work sleep disorder. Results: The prevalence of shift work sleep disorder in the sampled shift nurses was 48.5% during the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical fatigue, psychological stress, shift work more than 6 months per year, busyness during night shift, working more than 40 h per week, working more than four night shifts per month, sleeping more than 8 h before night shift, using sleep medication, irregular meals, and high-intensity physical activity were associated with increased odds of shift work sleep disorder. Good social support, good work-family balance, napping two or three times per week, resting more than one day after shifts, intervals of 8 days or more between shifts, and taking turns to rest during the night shift were associated with decreased odds of shift work sleep disorder. Conclusions: Shift work sleep disorder may be associated with scheduling strategies and personal behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. To reduce the incidence of shift work sleep disorders in nurses, nursing managers should increase night shift staffing, extend rest days after shift, increase night shift spacing, and reduce overtime, and nurses need to seek more family and social support and control their sleep schedules and diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep disturbance and suicidal ideation (SI) in a large cohort of adolescents experiencing the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis in China. METHODS One two-wave longitudinal web-based survey of sleep, SI, and depression was conducted among 67,905 college students (mean age = 20.23 years, SD = 1.63 years; 31.3% male) during the COVID-19 outbreak (Time1, T1: Feb 3rd to 10th, 2020) and initial remission period (Time2, T2: March 24th to April 3rd, 2020). RESULTS At T1 and T2, 8.5% and 9.7% of students reported sleep disturbance, 7.6% and 10.0% reported SI, respectively. The prevalence rates of SI at T1 and T2 increased significantly with sleep disturbance and short sleep duration. After adjusting for demographics, pandemic related factors, and depression at T1, sleep disturbance and short sleep duration at T1 were significantly associated with increased risk for SI at T2. Furthermore, sleep disturbance and short sleep duration predicted the new onset and persistence of SI. CONCLUSION These findings suggested that sleep disturbance predicts the development and persistence of SI. Early assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance may be an important strategy for prevention and intervention of SI in individuals after exposure to the special public health emergency of COVID-19.
