Abstract
OBJECTIVE. There is a growing consensus that interpersonal processes are key to understanding psychotherapy. How might that be reflected in the brain? Recent research proposes that inter-brain synchrony is a crucial neural component of interpersonal interaction. The current proof-of-concept study examines, for the first time, therapist-patient inter-brain synchrony measurement during multiple sessions. To guide the design of future studies, we performed a precursory test in a small sample of the association between inter-brain synchrony and therapeutic change, hypothesizing that it would gradually increase over therapy, reflecting inter-brain plasticity. METHOD. We scanned 18 therapy sessions of participants (N = 8) who underwent a 6-session test anxiety treatment. We measured therapist and patient brain activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and assessed perceived session quality, wellbeing, symptoms, and therapeutic alliance every session. RESULTS. In this proof-of-concept sample inter-brain synchrony gradually increased over treatment, and was associated with reduced symptoms, improved wellbeing and perceived session quality, but not with a stronger therapeutic alliance. fNIRS imaging had no discernable adverse effects. CONCLUSION. Our findings demonstrate that fNIRS imaging during psychotherapy is a feasible and viable research method and that inter-brain plasticity should be a candidate for future research on biological mechanisms underlying therapeutic change.

Abstract
The predictive power of movement and electrodermal activity (EDA) synchrony has been demonstrated in various studies. Although most studies have examined each synchrony modality separately, a growing interest in the simultaneous investigation of multiple modalities has emerged. Previous research has demonstrated the importance of disentangling within and between-dyad effects, however within and between-therapist effects have yet to be investigated. The aim of the present study was to test whether movement and EDA synchrony (measured both within and between therapists) predict across-session symptom change in two types of interventions (emotion-focused vs. cognitive). The results are based on 990 session segments of 90 clients with test anxiety who were treated with a six-session treatment program by 22 therapists, treating 3-15 clients each. Movement synchrony (on the basis of motion energy analysis (MEA) values) and EDA synchrony were quantified using cross-correlations. Symptom severity was assessed before each session using the state test anxiety measure. Movement and EDA synchrony correlated negatively (-0.19, p < .001). Moreover, higher movement synchrony as well as an interaction between movement and EDA synchrony was significantly associated with symptom improvement within, but not between therapists. In addition, an interaction between EDA synchrony and cognitive (versus emotion-focused) interventions was significantly associated with symptom improvement. These results provide initial evidence that therapists' average levels of synchrony may matter less than how synchronous they are with a specific client.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Up to 55 % of students experience test anxiety (TA), which is characterized by intense physiological and psychological symptoms before or during exams, such as anxiety, fear of failure, sweating, or increased heart rate. Furthermore, TA increases graduation times and can result in discontinuance of the graduate program all together. Previous research demonstrated the beneficial effects of combining cognitive behavioral therapy with imagery rescripting, however, treatment programs are comparably long. Hence, they do not account for the students´ time-sensitive schedules. Therefore, the present study investigates a two-session short-intervention using imagery rescripting to treat TA. METHODS 44 students and pupils were randomly assigned to either the two-session imagery rescripting intervention (22 participants) or the waitlist-control condition (22 participants). One week before the intervention clinical interviews were conducted and self-report questionnaires on TA, self-efficacy, symptoms of depression, and intrusive prospective images were completed (T1). The same questionnaires were completed one week (T2) and six months after the intervention (T3). RESULTS Test anxiety significantly decreased from T1 to T2, as well as from T1 to T3 within the intervention group. Furthermore, there were medium to large within and between group effects for situational test anxiety, self-efficacy, symptoms of depression, as well as prospective intrusive images, showing significant improvements for the intervention group at six months follow-up. LIMITATIONS The study is limited to the comparably small sample size, as well as the sole usage of self-report measurements. CONCLUSIONS The presented short-intervention provides a feasible treatment technique, which can be easily applied within school and university counseling centers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Imagery-based techniques have become a promising means in the treatment of test anxiety (TA). Although previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of imagery-based treatment, not all clients seem to benefit from it. The present study compares clients' pre- as well as post-treatment emotion dynamics between responders and non-responders. Furthermore, it examines treatment-related changes in emotion dynamics in both subgroups. METHODS The results are based on 44 clients suffering from TA who underwent a six-session imagery-based treatment and include Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). Emotions were assessed with the Profile of Mood States four times a day over the course of two weeks before and after the treatment. Temporal networks were computed to index emotion dynamics. RESULTS Pre-treatment emotion dynamics differed between responders and non-responders. Similarly, post-treatment emotion dynamics differed as well between both groups. Some changes were also observed between pre-treatment and post-treatment networks: for responders, fatigue no longer predicted anger, and depression predicted itself; for non-responders, calmness predicted fatigue, anger, depression, contentment, and anxiety. In addition, fatigue no longer predicted itself and anxiety predicted vigor. LIMITATIONS The investigation is marked by several limitations: a liberal inclusion threshold of at least a 50% response to EMA prompts, and a relatively homogenous sample. CONCLUSION These results provide first evidence for the idea that emotion dynamics may be associated with response to treatment for TA. Furthermore, effective imagery-based treatments may be tied to changes within these dynamics.

Abstract
The short form of the Bielefeld Partnership Expectations Questionnaire (BPEQ12) measures three partner-related attachment scales: fear of rejection, readiness for self-disclosure and conscious need for care. In addition to factor structure and reliability, the present study examined measurement invariance and validity using a non-clinical and a clinical sample of college students (N=208). Besides the BFPE12, the following Questionnaires were assessed: Short Form of Experiences in Close Relationships - Revised (ECR-RD8), Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-30), revised Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), and Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI-G). The factor structure is tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the internal consistency of the scales is quantified using McDonald's ω, the measurement invariance is investigated with two-group structural equation models, and the validity is examined using correlation and regression analyses. In both samples, the factor structure was confirmed (CFI>0.93; TLI>0.93; RMSEA<0.08; SRMR<0.08) and the reliability of all three scales was acceptable (ω>.7) - with the exception of need for care in the non-clinical group. We found configurational, metric and scalar measurement invariance regarding to the assignment in the clinical and non-clinical sample. In terms of convergent validity, fear of rejection and conscious need for care were associated with attachment-related anxiety (r=0.771 and r=0.539, p<0.001) and low readiness for self-disclosure was correlated with attachment-related avoidance (measured with ECR-RD8, r=- 0.704, p<0.001). Overall, the present study supports the factor structure, measurement invariance, reliability, and validity of the BPEQ12 in clinical and non-clinical samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Test anxiety is prevalent among medical students and leads to impaired academic performance. Test-related attentional bias has been identified as an important maintaining factor in test-anxious individuals. AIM To evaluate whether hypnosis and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) could modify medical college students' test anxiety and attentional bias. METHODS A total of 598 medical students were screened. The participants were divided into higher and lower test anxiety groups according to their scores on the test anxiety scale (TAS). Ninety medical college students with high TAS score were randomly assigned to a hypnosis or PMR group. Another 45 students with low TAS score were included, forming a baseline control group. The intervention was conducted weekly for 6 wk, and each session lasted approximately 30 min. The total intervention time and the number of intervention sessions for the hypnosis and PMR groups were equal. Data were collected at the pretest, posttest, and 2-mo follow-up. RESULTS Hypnosis group participants had a significantly lower TAS score at posttest (t = -21.827, P < 0.001) and at follow-up (t = -14.824, P < 0.001), compared to that at pretest. PMR group participants also had a significantly lower TAS score at posttest (t = -10.777, P < 0.001) and at follow-up (t = -7.444, P < 0.001), compared to that at pretest. At the posttest level, the hypnosis group had a significantly lower TAS score than the PMR group (t = -3.664, P < 0.001). At the follow-up level, the hypnosis group also had a significantly lower TAS score than the PMR group (t = -2.943, P = 0.004). Clinically significant improvement was found in both the hypnosis and PMR groups (hypnosis = 64.0%; PMR = 62.22%). Hypnosis was more effective than PMR in reducing test anxiety among medical college students. Hypnosis could modify attentional bias toward threatening stimuli, but PMR could not. CONCLUSION These results suggest that attentional bias plays an important role in test anxiety treatment.

Abstract
Imagery rescripting (IR), an effective intervention technique, may achieve its benefits through various change mechanisms. Previous work has indicated that client–therapist physiological synchrony during IR may serve as one such mechanism. The present work explores the possibility that therapist-led vs. client-led synchrony may be differentially tied to clients’ emotional experiences in therapy. The analyses were conducted with data taken from an open trial of a brief protocol for treating test anxiety (86 IR sessions from 50 client–therapist dyads). Physiological synchrony in electrodermal activity was indexed using two cross-correlation functions per session: once for client leading and again for therapist leading (in both cases, with lags up to 10 s). The clients’ and therapists’ in-session emotions were assessed with the Profile of Mood States. Actor–partner interdependence models showed that certain client (but not therapist) in-session emotions, namely higher contentment and lower anxiety and depression, were tied to therapist-led (but not client-led) physiological synchrony. The results suggest that therapist-led synchrony (i.e., clients’ arousal tracking therapists’ earlier arousal) is tied to more positive and less negative emotional experiences for clients.

Abstract
Objective: The effectiveness of Imagery Rescripting (IR) has been demonstrated in the treatment of various psychological disorders, but the mechanisms underlying it remain unclear. While current investigations predominantly refer to memory processes, physiological processes have received less attention. The main aim of this study is to test whether client physiological activation (i.e., arousal) and client-therapist physiological activation (i.e., synchrony) during IR segments predicted improvement on next-session outcomes and overall treatment response, and to compare these to the role of physiological (co)-activation during traditional cognitive-behavioral (CB) segments. Methods: The results are based on 177 therapy sessions from an imagery-based treatment for test anxiety with 60 clients. Client and therapist electrodermal activity was continuously monitored, next-session outcome was assessed with the Outcome Rating Scale and treatment outcome was assessed using the Test Anxiety Inventory. Results: Hierarchical linear models demonstrated that average physiological synchrony during IR segments (but not during CB ones) was significantly associated with higher well-being at both the session and the overall treatment levels. Clients' physiological arousal in either IR or CB segments was not predictive of either outcome. Conclusion: These results provide initial evidence for the idea that physiological synchrony might be an important underlying mechanism in IR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescents with chronic conditions often experience high levels of stress, anxiety and depression, and reduced quality of life. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been found to improve emotional distress in clinical and non-clinical populations and are a promising technique to support adolescents with chronic conditions in managing their symptoms and ultimately enhance their quality of life. METHODS AND ANALYSIS To test the effects of an MBI on emotional distress and quality of life and delineate the underlying mechanisms, the You.Mind! study uses a randomised staggered within-subjects design. Thirty adolescents with a chronic condition will be randomised to a baseline phase of 14-28 days followed by an MBI, consisting of four online group sessions and online support spread over 8 weeks. Outcomes will be assessed by short, repeated measurements throughout the baseline, intervention and follow-up phases and by standardised questionnaires and experience sampling measures before randomisation, at postintervention and at 3-months follow-up. Analysis will be based on general linear modelling and multilevel mixed-effects modelling. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee Research UZ/KU Leuven and the Ethics Committee of Ghent University Hospital and Ghent University (S63485). Results will be disseminated through presentations at public lectures, scientific institutions and meetings, and through publication in peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT04359563.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: A substantial portion of students report test anxiety, and those reporting low levels of self-efficacy seem to be especially affected. Previous research has indicated the relevance of mental images in the maintenance of anxiety disorders, however, no data are available with respect to test anxiety. In order to close this gap, the present study investigates the association between test anxiety, self-efficacy and mental images. Method: One hundred sixty-three university students completed an online survey. Test anxiety (PAF), general self-efficacy (WIRKALL-r), study-related self-efficacy (WIRK_STUD), intrusiveness of mental images (IFES), spontaneous use of imagery (SUIS) and vividness of imagery (VVIQ) were examined. Results: Test-related mental images were frequently reported among the surveyed students. Test anxiety showed a positive correlation with IFES and a negative correlation with self-efficacy. Mediation analyses showed that about one fifth of the influence of self-efficacy on test anxiety is mediated by IFES. Discussion: The present study gives first indication about an association between test anxiety, self-efficacy and mental images, even though the results are limited with respect to generalizability. Further investigations with respect to the impact of test-related mental images on the self-efficacy/test-anxiety linkage are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Test anxiety is common in university students. Demanding schedules may contribute to the relatively low utilization of professional counseling, when compared to other anxiety disorders. A possible solution could be a psychotherapeutic short-term intervention. The present exploratory study implemented a short-term psychotherapeutic treatment, consisting of two imagery rescripting (IR) sessions. The efficacy of IR techniques has already been demonstrated in the treatment of various anxiety disorders including test anxiety. METHODS Nine students suffering from test anxiety (m = 3, f = 6) underwent two weekly applied sessions of IR. Outcome variables were examined one week prior to (t1), immediately after (t2) and three months after (t3) the intervention, using self-evaluation questionnaires on test anxiety (PAF), depressive symptoms (BDI II), life satisfaction (FLZ), general self-efficacy and study-specific self-efficacy (WIRKALL; WIRK_STUD), intrusiveness of mental images (IFES), and change and acceptance (VEV; ZUF; BFTB). RESULTS There were no dropouts. According to results from ZUF and BFTB, the participants where highly satisfied with the intervention. PAF scores decreased significantly over time (t1 to t3), whereas WIRKALL scores (t1 to t3) and WIRK_STUD scores (t1 to t3 and t2 to t3) increased significantly. IFES scores decreased immediately after the intervention (t1 compared to t2) and further after the follow-up (t1 to t3). No changes in BDI-II scores were observed. DISCUSSION The findings indicate a high acceptance and efficacy of the two-session IR-intervention. Limits are the lack of a control group, and the small sample size. Further evaluation in future controlled studies is needed.
