Figure 1 Mechanisms of remote ischemic conditioning. The cardioprotective effects of several ischemia/reperfusion cycles applied in a distant site (most commonly the upper limb) have been ascribed to the activation of humoral and/or neural pathways. The pathogenesis of remote ischemic conditioning is incompletely known, however it is possi-ble that both humoral and neural mechanisms underlie this response.
