Abstract
BACKGROUND The positive influence of physical activities on a person's physical and mental health has been proven many times. These findings were implemented in the regular exercise therapy offered within psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland. However, after leaving a psychiatric hospital, there are insufficient opportunities for individuals with psychiatric disorders to engage in sports. Therefore, voluntary sports groups for this specific population have been offered in Switzerland by the disability sports systems since 2015. Still, the perspective of individuals with psychiatric disorders as well as perceived barriers and facilitators for participating in these groups have neither been assessed nor included in the design of sports programs. METHODS This study consists of 15 semi-structured interviews (N = 15) lasting up to one hour each with individuals with psychiatric disorders who participated in voluntary sports groups for this specific population in Switzerland. The results were analyzed employing Thematic Analysis using Nvivo. RESULTS Interviewees named offer-specific (disability-related), emotional (social exchange), and rational motives (health) for their participation in voluntary sports groups for individuals with psychiatric disorders. In addition, intrapersonal (psychological/physical deficits), sociocultural (stigmatization), and structural (unsuitable location) factors were mentioned as possible inhibitors in the context of participation in voluntary sports groups for individuals with psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, participants experienced predominantly positive outcomes from participation. CONCLUSION Individuals with psychiatric disorders benefit socially, physically, and psychologically from participating in voluntary sports groups for this specific population. However, participation is associated with barriers that need to be minimized in the future. Additionally, a large-scale survey is necessary to validate the results among the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because physical activity (PA) has many benefits for children's and adolescents' mental health, it has been suggested that PA may be an effective strategy to physically and mentally recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tested the reciprocal relationship between PA and mental health during the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. It was hypothesized that mental health during the pandemic would determine how much children and adolescents re-engage in PA after easing the restrictions. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that PA engagement would predict mental health improvement after the pandemic. METHODS This was a prospective study with two measurement occasions. Pretest data collection was undertaken in February 2022, shortly before German authorities eased and lifted the COVID-19 restrictions. The follow-up (posttest) occurred six weeks later (April 2022). Both times, a sample of elementary and grammar school students aged 6 to 18 years (N = 170) reported their mental health problems and health-related quality of life. Mental health problems were assessed with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and health-related quality of life was assessed with the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire. PA was measured continuously during the study period using smart electronic devices with a built-in pedometer. RESULTS PA gradually increased after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions (p < .001). This increase was unrelated to pretest mental health problems and health-related quality of life except for emotional symptoms (p = .041). Participants with higher emotional symptoms showed a sharper increase in PA towards the end of the study period. Furthermore, hyperactivity decreased (p = .004) and physical well-being (p = .004), perceived autonomy (p < .001), and perceived quality of school environment (p = .008) improved from before to after the easing of restrictions, yet participants' PA predicted none of these changes. CONCLUSIONS The adverse effects of COVID-19 containment on PA seem to alleviate after children and adolescents are allowed to return to schools. This is likely to be due to the school setting, which provides many different opportunities for formal and informal PA rather than students' mental health. School-related PA programs should be part of children's and adolescents' recovery from the pandemic .

Abstract
The beneficial impact of physical activity on preventing and treating mental disorders has captured growing (research) interest. This article aims to provide a concise overview of essential evidence regarding the effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of physical activity for individuals with mental disorders clustered as "stress-related" conditions. Empirical findings (e.g., longitudinalprospective studies, interventional randomized-controlled-trials, reviews, meta-analyses) regarding the effects of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of stress-related mental disorders are summarized. Furthermore, potential mechanisms underlying these effects are discussed, and recommendations regarding the use of physical activity are outlined. The majority of studies indicate good efficacy of physical activity in prospectively lowering the risk for the incidence of subsequent stress-related mental disorders as well as in the treatment of manifest disorders. Most evidence targets unipolar depressive disorder and, secondly, anxiety disorders. Research regarding posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and somatoform disorders is promising but scarce. Physical activity seems to be useful as a stand-alone-treatment as well as in combination with other psychotherapeutic or pharmacological treatments. Multiple intertwined physiological, psychological, and social mechanisms are assumed to mediate the beneficial effects. Recommendations regarding physical activity can orientate on official guidelines but should consider the individual needs and circumstances of each subject. In summary, physical activity seems to be effective in the prevention and treatment of stressrelated mental disorders and, therefore, should be fostered in healthcare-settings. Future studies are needed to clarify partly inconsistent patterns of results and to close research gaps, e.g., concerning somatoform disorders.

Abstract
There is strong evidence that physical activities (PAs) are an important factor in increasing and maintaining mental health as well as in preventing relapse after mental health disorders. Physical activity is an important part of the treatment program in psychiatric hospitals. However, when individuals with mental health disorders (IMHD) leave the hospitals in Switzerland (CH), there are few possibilities to do physical activity in a given setting. One of them are voluntary sports groups for individuals with mental health disorders (SGPSY), which have been growing continuously in CH since 2016. Yet, little is known about these groups and their training settings. Therefore, the present study explores challenges, barriers, and enablers for participation in SGPSY from the point of view of the trainers of these groups. Additionally, as the sustainable implementation of SGPSY relies on the trainer, the study aims to identify reasons/motivations as well as the personality characteristics of the SGPSY trainers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 trainers of SGPSY in CH during spring 2022. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis in nVivo. Participants identified several intrapersonal (lack of motivation and fitness, mood problems, etc.), interpersonal (conflicts between participants), and structural barriers (time/location) that hinder IMHD from participating in SGPSY. The participating trainer reported that trainer might be helpful in overcoming the barriers by supporting IMHD as enablers. They rate social skills to be essential for the successful management and organization of SGPSY, as well as the ability to set boundaries to protect one's private life and sports skills expertise. The reasons for their engagement as trainers of SGPSY were the satisfaction of doing sports with IMHD and to improve the physical activities habits of IMHD. The findings of the study highlight the need to upskill the trainers of SGPSY in order to improve recruitment of the future trainers of SGPSY by focusing on the assessment of appropriate personality characteristics of trainers and their motives. Additionally, these findings should be integrated in the educational materials of Swiss disabled sports systems. Further research should validate the results from SGPSY participants' point of view.

Abstract
With the outbreak of the Corona Virus Disease 19 (Covid-19) in late 2019, governments increasingly imposed containment strategies, including social distancing as well as restricted population movement, potentially having negative impacts on mental and physical health. A growing number of studies have examined the impact of the pandemic on different facets of physical activity (PA); an overview combining these (mixed) results, however, is missing. Thus, the objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate whether and to which extent PA changed from before to during the Covid-19 pandemic, taking age, gender, and measurement method into account. The literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Results of the main characteristics were descriptively synthesized and analyzed in a meta-analysis quantifying effects of the pandemic on PA divided by age groups, with additional subgroup analyses of the characteristics age, gender, and measurement method being narratively synthesized. Overall, 57 studies with a total sample size of 119,094 participants (N between 10 and 60,560 subjects) from 14 countries worldwide with participants aged between four and 93 years were included. Thirty-two studies revealed a significant decline in PA, whereas only five studies found a significant increase in PA during the Covid-19 pandemic. Fourteen studies revealed mixed results. PA decreased in all age groups, independent of gender. Most self-reported and all device-based measurement methods showed a reduction in PA. However, effects were not found to be significant in all age groups. Nevertheless, the declining trend should be noted and governments should strive to enable PA within periods of pandemic restrictions, or promote alternatives such as digital training to avoid negative health consequences within the population.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the associations between physical activity (PA) and psychological well-being (PWB) among male university students. An institutionally based cross-sectional study was completed by 243 young men aged 18–30 years in a Nigerian public university. PA was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and PWB was measured by Ryff’s Scale of Psychological Well-being (PWB). The mean age of the participants was 24.9 (SD = 7.61) and majority (39.1%) of the participants was aged 18–22 years. Regarding PA, 16.0%, 64.2%, and 19.8% of the participants had low, moderate, and high PA levels, respectively. The mean total PWB score was 119.9 (SD = 23.64). For the domains of PWB, male students had mean scores of 25.73 (SD = 6.05), 19.42 (SD = 6.82), 25.75 (6.10), 14.12 (SD = 3.89), 13.70 (SD = 4.04) and 21.12 (4.92) for self-acceptance, autonomy, positive relations, environmental mastery, purpose in life and personal growth, respectively. Total PA (total MET min/week) was associated with the total PWB scores (β = 0.13, p < .05). The total PA METs was significantly associated with self-acceptance (β = 0.13, p < .05). positive relations (β = 0.16, p < .05), purpose in life (β = 0.39, p < .05). Vigorous PA METs showed significantly negative effect on personal growth (β = −0.28, p < .05) and accounted for 2.0% of the variance of personal growth. PA accounted for 2.5% and 1.2% of the variance of positive relations and purpose in life, respectively., Most of the young men had moderate levels of PA and PWB. PA was significantly associated with PWB among the young men. Male sensitive evidence-based health promotion interventions should aim at promoting PA and PWB among male university students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus and depression are diseases with a rising prevalence in Germany. Journalistic media coverage offers the opportunity to inform the public about options for prevention and therapy. Research shows that media portrayals of different prevention and treatment options might influence health behavior as well as policy support and eventually structural healthcare. OBJECTIVES To date, little is known about the media coverage of the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus and depression. This study aims at demonstrating how diabetes mellitus and depression are portrayed in the German news media, focusing on options for prevention and therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A quantitative content analysis of German print and online media from 2012 to 2018 was conducted. In sum, N = 645 articles on diabetes mellitus (n = 219) and depression (n = 426) were analyzed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Diabetes mellitus and depression are rarely the main subject in German news coverage despite their high prevalence. Depression is reported more frequently than diabetes mellitus - often, however, in the context of suicide or celebrities. Regarding diabetes mellitus, reports differentiated insufficiently between the various types. For both conditions, pharmacotherapy was mentioned more frequently than low-threshold measures and structural prevention opportunities, which might have adverse consequences for those seeking help. Overall, to establish prevention and low-threshold forms of therapy as treatment options in the public, strategic communicators should focus more on them.

Abstract
Childhood is an important and sensitive period for cognitive development. There is limited published research regarding the relationship between sports and cognitive functions in children. We present studies that demonstrate the influence of physical activity on health, especially a positive correlation between sports and cognitive functions. The keywords “children, cognition, cognitive function, physical activity, and brain” were searched for using PsycInfo, Medline, and Google Scholar, with publication dates ranging from January 2000 to November 2017. Of the 617 results, 58 articles strictly connected to the main topics of physical activity and cognitive functioning were then reviewed. The areas of attention, thinking, language, learning, and memory were analyzed relative to sports and childhood. Results suggest that engaging in sports in late childhood positively influences cognitive and emotional functions. There is a paucity of publications that investigate the impact of sports on pre-adolescents’ cognitive functions, or explore which cognitive functions are developed by which sporting disciplines. Such knowledge would be useful in developing training programs for pre-adolescents, aimed at improving cognitive functions that may guide both researchers and practitioners relative to the wide range of benefits that result from physical activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental pressure and stress represent an ever-increasing socio-political challenge. The heart rate variability (HRV) measurement, which has its origin in the cardiac function diagnosis, gives information on the neurovegetative activity. A low HRV shows an imbalance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic efferents and thus is an indicator of stress. METHOD A randomized, controlled, two-armed parallel study with 100 participants and a period of 90 days was performed. Main object of investigation was to what extent the mineral magnesium, which is also a high-quality natural calcium antagonist in cardiology, can influence the sympathovagal balance, when given in combination with a strength-endurance training. The effect on intracellular magnesium concentration was investigated as an additional parameter. RESULTS In the group with daily supplementation of 400 mg of magnesium, HRV parameters clearly increased: pNN50 - an indicator of parasympathetic activity - increased. LF-HF ratio as well as stress index - low values for each represent a good balance of the vegetative nervous system - decreased. In the control group no positive changes in HRV parameters could be shown. Vagus activity, and thus the adaptive and regenerative capacity of the body, veritably increased by magnesium supplementation. No effect on the intracellular magnesium concentration could be shown in the study. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study point out that persons with mental and physical stress can benefit from a daily intake of magnesium. This might lead to an improved physiological regulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic efferents and, furthermore, prevent magnesium deficiency and diseases such as, for example, restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, sleep disorder or depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Physical exercise, especially aerobic training, improves physical performance and cognitive function of older people. Furthermore, it has been speculated that age-associated deteriorations in physical performance and cognitive function could be counteracted through exposures to passive intermittent normobaric hypoxia (IH). Thus, the present investigation aimed at investigating the effect of passive IH combined with subsequent aerobic training on hematological parameters and aerobic physical performance (V˙O2max) as well as peripheral levels of the neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cognitive function. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial in a repeated measure design. METHODS 34 older participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). While IG was supplied with passive IH for 90min, CG breathed ambient air. Subsequently, both groups underwent 30min of aerobic training three times per week for four consecutive weeks. Aerobic physical performance and cognitive function was tested with spiroergometry and the Stroop test. Blood samples were taken to measure hematological parameters and the peripheral serum BDNF-level. RESULTS We found increases in the values of hematological parameters, the time to exhaustion in the load test and an augmented and sustainable improvement in cognitive function within the IG of the older people only. However, in both groups, the V˙O2max and serum BDNF-level did not increase. CONCLUSIONS Based on these results, hypoxic training seems to be beneficial to enhance hematological parameters, physical performance and cognitive function in older people. The current hypoxic-dose was not able to enhance the serum BDNF-level or V˙O2max.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Injury is a major stressor for athletes and one that can pose significant challenges. Student athletes must handle rigorous academic as well as athletic demands that require time as well as significant physical requirements. Trying to perform and succeed in the classroom and on the playing field has become more difficult as the demands and expectations have increased. If an athlete is injured, these stressors increase. MAIN THESIS Stress is an important antecedent to injuries and can play a role in the response to, rehabilitation and return to play after injury. The psychological response to injury can trigger and/or unmask mental health issues including depression and suicidal ideation, anxiety, disordered eating, and substance use/abuse. There are barriers to mental health treatment in athletes. They often consider seeking help as a sign of weakness, feeling that they should be able to 'push through' psychological obstacles as they do physical ones. Athletes may not have developed healthy coping behaviours making response to injury especially challenging. PURPOSE I discuss the current state of knowledge regarding the psychological response to injury and delineate resources necessary to direct the injured athlete to a mental health care provider if appropriate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patients with mental disorders frequently manifest unhealthy behavior, which contributes to their increased risk for chronic mental and somatic diseases as well as excess mortality rates of 10 years and more. It also impairs their well-being and the course of mental disorders.We analyzed whether by addressing unhealthy behavior prevention can be integrated into psychodynamic psychotherapy. METHODS We reviewed the literature on the role of unhealthy behavior for mental disorders, on the role of lifestyle risk factors in psychodynamic theory, and on barriers to the integration of addressing lifestyle in psychodynamic psychotherapy. RESULTS Smoking, unhealthy dietary habits, and physical inactivity constitute dysfunctional behavior, resulting from maladaptive self-representations and an impairment of emotion-regulation capacities. In psychodynamic psychotherapy this maladaptive behavior can be addressed and treated as a kind of defensive behavior and resistance. CONCLUSION We believe that by addressing unhealthy behavior prevention can become a crucial task for psychodynamic psychotherapists today.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a rehabilitation intervention on physical dysfunction (PDF) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in fracture victims 50 months after the Sichuan earthquake of 2008 and to identify risk factors for PTSD. METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study. Four hundred and fifty-nine earthquake-related fracture victims from Mianzhu city, Sichuan Province who did not qualify for disability pension participated. Two hundred and forty-five subjects received regular rehabilitation and 214 did not. Muscle strength, joint range of motion (ROM),sensory function, and sit-to-stand balance capacity were evaluated to assess PDF. The PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) was administered to screen for PTSD. An ordinary least square regression was used to predict PTSD, and a logistic regression was used to predict PDF. In addition a Least Angle Regression (LARS) was carried out for PTSD to study the effects of rehabilitation and PDF at the same time. RESULTS Unadjusted and adjusted group differences in physical dysfunction (p<0.01) and PTSD prevalence (p<0.05) were significant in favor of the rehabilitation group. In addition, being female, average or above family income, having witnessed death and fearfulness were found risk factors for PTSD symptoms 50 months after the earthquake. Both PDF and rehabilitation were selected predictors by LARS demonstrating opposite effects. CONCLUSION PDF and PTSD were significantly reduced by the rehabilitation intervention. Future medical intervention strategies should consider rehabilitation in order to assist survivors in dealing with both physical and psychological effects of natural disaster.

Abstract
PURPOSE Impairment of learning and memory processes has been demonstrated by many studies using different stressors. Other reports suggested that exercise has a powerful behavioral intervention to improve cognitive function and brain health. In this research, we investigated protective effects of treadmill running on chronic stress-induced memory deficit in rats. METHODS Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=10) as follows: Control (Co), Sham (Sh), Stress (St), Exercise (Ex) and Stress and Exercise (St & Ex) groups. Chronic restraint stress was applied by 6h/day/21days and also treadmill running at a speed 20-21m/min for 1h/day/21days. Memory function was evaluated by the passive avoidance test in different intervals (1, 7 and 21 days) after foot shock. RESULTS OUR RESULTS SHOWED THAT: 1) Although exercise alone showed beneficial effects especially on short and mid-term memory (P<0.05) in comparison with control group, but synchronized exercise with stress had not significantly improved short, mid and long-term memory deficit in stressed rats. 2) Short and mid-term memory deficit was significantly (P<0.05) observed in synchronized exercise with stress and stress groups with respect to normal rats. 3) Memory deficit in synchronized exercise with stress group was nearly similar to stressed rats. 4) Helpful effects of exercise were less than harmful effects of stress when they were associated together. CONCLUSION The data correspond to the possibility that although treadmill running alone has helpful effects on learning and memory consolidation, but when it is synchronized with stress there is no significant benefit and protective effects in improvement of memory deficit induced by chronic stress. However, it is has a better effect than no training on memory deficit in stressed rats.
