The authors investigated the role of intestinal STAT3 signaling imbalance as a cause of gut barrier dysfunction during the progression from cirrhosis to acute-on-chronic liver failure. The study combines in vivo mouse models with comprehensive in vitro cellular and molecular analyses and addresses an important novel mechanism.
