Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the use of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography as a diagnostic tool for lung lesions in dogs. Dogs referred to the Radiology Department of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital between 2020 and 2022 for the detection of lung lesions were included in the study. The characteristics of the lung lesions were assessed using radiography as a screening tool for localization, B-mode ultrasound for tissue characterization, and subsequently, both qualitative (elastogram grades 1-3) and quantitative (shear wave velocity-SWV) elastographic evaluations. The lesions were classified based on clinical, ultrasound, radiographic, histopathological, and/or cytological findings into the following categories: consolidations, atelectasis, or neoplasms (nodules and masses). Twenty-six dogs met the eligibility criteria and were included in the study. In some cases, the same dog had more than one type of lesion, resulting in the evaluation of 35 lung lesions: 13 masses, 8 nodules, 8 consolidations, and 4 areas of atelectasis. The quantitative elastographic evaluation revealed lower stiffness in atelectatic lesions (1.48 ± 0.35 m/s) compared with consolidations (2.94 ± 0.64 m/s), nodules (2.85 ± 1.40 m/s), and masses (3.13 ± 1.45 m/s), although no definitive diagnostic cut-off value was established, due to the limited number of benign lesions. The results suggest that ARFI elastography can be a valuable complementary tool alongside clinical data and conventional imaging techniques in assessing lung lesions in dogs. Future studies with a larger sample size of benign parenchymal lung lesions are needed to further explore the potential of elastography for predicting malignancy.

Abstract
Renal diseases in dogs can be diagnosed effectively using B-mode ultrasound. Point shear wave elastography (pSWE) has demonstrated usefulness in diagnosing renal diseases in human medicine. However, its application in veterinary medicine is in its nascent stage. It was hypothesized that establishing pSWE reference values in nonazotemic dogs would prove valuable in differentiating renal diseases. In light of this, a single-center, quantitative study with an objective to normalize B-mode ultrasound parameters and pSWE values of the kidney in nonazotemic dogs was conducted. A total of 198 animals presented with clinical signs of anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration were enrolled in the study spanning 2 years. Among them, 52 nonazotemic dogs were included as subjects for the study. B-mode ultrasound quantitative parameters, including length (L), breadth (B), height (H), cortical thickness (RCT), and medulla thickness (RMT) of the kidneys, as well as the diameter of the aorta (Ao), were normalized. Additionally, calculated parameters such as L:Ao, B:Ao, H:Ao, RCT:Ao, and corticomedullary ratios were worked out. Point shear wave elastography values were obtained from the cranial and caudal poles of renal cortices using ElastPQ stiffness software. The pSWE values of kidneys in nonazotemic dogs were normalized. The mean ± standard error values were 1.04 ± 0.08 m/s (95% confidence interval: 0.88-1.19 m/s) and 4.18 ± 0.62 kPa (95% confidence interval: 2.93-5.42 kPa). In conclusion, B-mode ultrasound quantitative parameters, ratios, and pSWE values were normalized in nonazotemic dogs, which may prove valuable in differentiating renal pathologies in canine patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate stiffness of the liver parenchyma in healthy adult cats by means of point shear wave elastography (PSWE). ANIMALS 18 client-owned adult (1- to 6-year-old) healthy cats. PROCEDURES Echogenicity and echotexture of the liver parenchyma were assessed by means of conventional B-mode ultrasonography. The shear wave velocity (Vs) of the right and left portions of the liver were measured by means of PSWE. RESULTS B-mode ultrasonography revealed no abnormalities in echotexture or echogenicity of the liver parenchyma in any cat. Mean (95% CI) Vs in the liver parenchyma was 1.46 m/s (1.36 to 1.55 m/s) for the right portion, 1.36 m/s (1.26 to 1.47 m/s) for the left portion, and 1.43 m/s (1.35 to 1.51 m/s) overall. The difference in mean Vs between the 2 portions of the liver was significant. No significant correlation was found between Vs and body weight or between Vs and the depth at which this variable was measured. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Quantitative PSWE of the liver was feasible in healthy adult cats. The obtained values for Vs may be useful for interpretation of and comparison with values measured in cats with liver disease. Additional research is needed to explore the potential usefulness of PSWE for diagnostic purposes.

Abstract
Shear wave elastography (SWE) induces lateral shear wave through acoustic pulses of the transducer and evaluates tissue stiffness quantitatively. This study was performed to evaluate feasibility and reproducibility of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) for evaluation of tissue stiffness and to examine technical factors that affect shear wave speed (SWS) measurements in adult dogs. Nine healthy, 2 year-old, adult beagles with the median weight of 9.8 kg were included. In this prospective, experimental, exploratory study, 2D SWE (Aplio 600) from the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, prostate, lymph nodes (submandibular, retropharyngeal, axillary, medial iliac, and inguinal), submandibular salivary gland, and thyroid was performed in anesthetized beagles. Color map was drawn and SWS of each SWE were measured as Young’s modulus (kPa) and shear wave velocity (m/s). The effect of measuring site, scan approach, depth, and anesthesia on SWE was assessed in abdominal organs by two observers independently. A total of 27 SWE examinations were performed in 12 organs by each observer. All SWS measurements were preformed successfully; however, SWE in the renal medulla could not be successfully conducted, and it was excluded from further analysis. Interobserver agreement of SWE was moderate to excellent in all organs, except for the left liver lobe at 10–15 mm depth with the intercostal scan. In the liver, there was no significant effect of the measuring site and scan approach on SWE. SWS of the liver and spleen tended to be higher with increasing the depth, but no significant difference. However, anesthesia significantly increased tissue stiffness in the spleen compared to awake dog regardless of the depth (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in SWS according to the measuring site in the kidneys and pancreas (P < 0.001). 2D SWE was feasible and highly reproducible for the estimation of tissue stiffness in dogs. Measuring site and anesthesia are sources of variability affecting SWE in abdominal organs. Therefore, these factors should be considered during SWS measurement in 2D SWE. This study provides basic data for further studies on 2D SWE on pathological conditions that may increase tissue stiffness in dogs.

Abstract
Placental rigidity and biometry of twelve pregnant bitches were evaluated using B-mode and Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) ultrasonography, performed once daily, from day 15 of gestation until parturition. Specific software (Virtual Touch Tissue Quantification® VTTQ and Virtual Touch Tissue Imaging Quantification® VTTIQ) were used. Values for results for variables were correlated and regression models related to gestational day were used to make evaluations. Maternal-fetal placental thickness increased to day 63 (P < 0.0001; R² = 0.91); maternal placental thickness increased until day 40 (P = 0.0340; R² = 0.54); and fetal placental thickness increased to day 50 (P < 0.0001; R² = 0.83) of gestation. Shear wave velocity (SWV) of the dorsal (P < 0.0010) was greater than lateral, which in turn was greater (P = 0.020) than the ventral area. The SWV of the dorsal area as determined using VTTQ, decreased from day 21-35 and increased to day 56 of gestation (P = 0.0291; R² = 0.4021); lateral SWV decreased from day 24-45 and increased until the time of parturition (P < 0.001; R² = 0.6055). The SWV of the dorsal area, as determined using VTTIQ, decreased from day 21-43 and then increased to day 60 of gestation (P = 0.0016; R² = 0.5075); and ventral area SWV increased from day 21-23 and decreased until the time of parturition (P < 0.001; R² = 0.8055). Placental alterations reflect structural and biochemical gestational adaptations and can become useful techniques for obstetrics.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the stiffness of foetal lungs, liver, kidneys and placentomes by acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in ovine and to correlate obtained findings with foetal development. Twenty-four ewes were included, and tissue stiffness of foetal lung, liver, kidney and placentome was measured beginning with 10th gestational week by qualitative-quantitative ARFI elastography. A total of 33 healthy lambs were born. Qualitative elastographic analysis permitted to classify maternal and foetal tissues elasticity in decreasing order as follows: placentome, kidney, liver and lung. Regarding quantitative ARFI elastography data, shear wave velocity (SWV) of foetal lung and liver varied. The lung SWV decreased gradually from the 16th to the 21st gestational week (R2 = 0.80; p < 0.001), while liver SWV increased gradually from the 14th to 21st gestational week (R2 = 0.80; p < 0.001). In contrast, the kidneys and placentomes SWV's remained constant through gestation (p = 0.076; and 0.34). ARFI elastography was shown feasible for evaluation of maternal and foetal tissues stiffness in the ovine model. It can be used to demonstrate pulmonary and hepatic stiffness modifications during foetal development.

Abstract
Objective was to evaluate the echotexture and characteristics during terminal development of canine foetal respiratory and hepatic systems through elastographic examinations. Fifteen pregnant bitches were evaluated by ultrasonography twice daily, from the 53rd gestational day until whelping, and images obtained from 120 to 0 h before parturition were analysed. Images of foetal lungs and liver were recorded and then used for computer-assisted analyses to determine quantitative attributes. Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) elastographic of internal organs were classified as 'soft' (white areas) or 'hard' (dark areas) and quantitative analyses determined the mean shear wave velocities (SWV) of foetal lungs and liver. After delivery, canine neonates were clinically evaluated, and their health status was monitored weekly until 60 days post-partum. Sonographic parameters over time were compared by ANOVA and Pearson's correlations were used to determine associations between SWVs and echotextural variables. Foetal lungs and liver had a homogeneous echotexture and pulmonary parenchyma appeared hyperechoic when compared with that of the liver. Mean numerical pixel values (NPVs) of lungs decreased from 120 to 24 h and subsequently increased until parturition (P = 0.04). Lungs and liver mean (± SD) SWVs (0.98 ± 0.12 and 0.84 ± 0.11 m/s, respectively) didn't vary (P > 0.05) over time. Fluctuations in pulmonary NPVs indicated there was a pattern corresponding to structural and functional changes that occur during the terminal stage of pre-natal canine development and hence can be a useful diagnostic tool in veterinary. Foetal lung and liver SWVs were relatively consistent and there was no detectable changes during the pre-partum period for this variable or in echotexture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the parenchymal elasticity of the thyroid gland with acoustic radiation force impulse imaging in pediatric patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis and to compare it with healthy volunteers. METHODS Twenty-six patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis and 26 healthy volunteers between 6 and 17 years were included. The shear wave velocity (SWV) values of both thyroid lobes in both groups were evaluated. RESULTS The age and sex characteristics of the controls and patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis were similar. The SWV of the thyroid gland in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis (mean ± SD, 1.67 ± 0.63 m/s) was significantly higher than that in the control group (1.30 ± 0.13 m/s; P < .001). There was no significant difference between the thyroid lobes in both groups. A receiver operating characteristic curve analyses showed an optimal cutoff value of 1.41 m/s, with 73.1% sensitivity, 80.8% specificity, a 79.2 % positive predictive value, and a 75.0% negative predictive value (area under the curve, 0.806; P < .001). In patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis, there was a positive correlation between the SWV values versus anti-thyroperoxidase (Pearson r = 0.46; P = .038). There were no correlations between age, body mass index, thyroid function test results, and anti-thyroglobulin values and versus SWV values. Also, no significant differences were seen between the groups for gland size, gland vascularity, and l-thyroxine treatment. CONCLUSIONS Acoustic radiation force impulse elastography showed a significant difference in the stiffness of the thyroid gland between children with Hashimoto thyroiditis and the healthy group. Using acoustic radiation force impulse elastography immediately after a standard ultrasound evaluation may predict chronic autoimmune thyroiditis.

Abstract
AIM To explore the relationship of liver and spleen shear wave velocity in patients with liver cirrhosis combined with portal hypertension, and assess the value of liver and spleen shear wave velocity in predicting the prognosis of patients with portal hypertension.
METHODS All 67 patients with liver cirrhosis diagnosed as portal hypertension by hepatic venous pressure gradient in our hospital from June 2014 to December 2014 were enrolled into this study. The baseline information of these patients was recorded. Furthermore, 67 patients were followed-up at 20 mo after treatment, and liver and spleen shear wave velocity were measured by acoustic radiation force impulse at the 1st week, 3rd month and 9th month after treatment. Patients with favorable prognosis were assigned into the favorable prognosis group, while patients with unfavorable prognosis were assigned into the unfavorable prognosis group. The variation and difference in liver and spleen shear wave velocity in these two groups were analyzed by repeated measurement analysis of variance. Meanwhile, in order to evaluate the effect of liver and spleen shear wave velocity on the prognosis of patients with portal hypertension, Cox’s proportional hazard regression model analysis was applied. The ability of those factors in predicting the prognosis of patients with portal hypertension was calculated through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.
RESULTS The liver and spleen shear wave velocity in the favorable prognosis group revealed a clear decline, while those in the unfavorable prognosis group revealed an increasing tendency at different time points. Furthermore, liver and spleen shear wave velocity was higher in the unfavorable prognosis group, compared with the favorable prognosis group; the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The prognosis of patients with portal hypertension was significantly affected by spleen hardness at the 3rd month after treatment [relative risk (RR) = 3.481]. At the 9th month after treatment, the prognosis was affected by liver hardness (RR = 5.241) and spleen hardness (RR = 7.829). The differences between these two groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The ROC analysis revealed that the area under the curve (AUC) of spleen hardness at the 3rd month after treatment was 0.644, while the AUCs of liver and spleen hardness at the 9th month were 0.579 and 0.776, respectively. These might predict the prognosis of patients with portal hypertension.
CONCLUSION Spleen hardness at the 3rd month and liver and spleen shear wave velocity at the 9th month may be used to assess the prognosis of patients with portal hypertension. This is hoped to be used as an indicator of predicting the prognosis of patients with portal hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate renal parenchymal elasticity with acoustic radiation force impulse imaging in pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and compare with healthy volunteers. METHODS Thirty-eight healthy volunteers and 30 pediatric CKD patients were enrolled in this prospective study. The shear wave velocity (SW) values of both kidneys in CKD patients and healthy volunteers were evaluated. RESULTS The mean SW in healthy volunteers was 2.21 ± 0.34 m/s, whereas the same value was 1.81 ± 0.49, 1.72 ± 0.63, 1.66 ± 0.29, 1.48 ± 0.37, and 1.23 ± 0.27 for stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 in CKD patients, respectively. The SW was significantly lower for each stage in the CKD patients compared with healthy volunteers. Acoustic radiation force impulse could not predict the different stages of CKD, with the exception of stage 5. The cut-off value for predicting CKD was 1.81 m/s; at this threshold, sensitivity was 76.5% and specificity was 92.1% (area under the curve = 0.870 [95% confidence interval: 0.750-0.990]; P < .001). Interobserver agreement expressed as intraclass coefficient correlation was 0.65 (95% confidence interval: 0.34 to 0.83; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Acoustic radiation force impulse may be a potentially useful tool in detecting CKD in pediatric patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT To describe the ARFI elastography in the evaluation of the adrenal glands in adult dogs, to evaluate the stiffness of adrenal parenchyma and to determine the qualitative and quantitative standards of the ARFI technique, which have not yet been described in veterinary medicine. Sixty adrenal glands from thirty healthy adult dogs were evaluated by B-mode and qualitative and quantitative ARFI elastography to assess the stiffness of healthy parenchyma and to determine the quality and quantity (shear velocity) standards of ARFI technique in body, cranial and caudal adrenal poles. Findings of ultrasonography evaluations were normal. Qualitative elastography showed that adrenal glands were not deformable and presented homogeneous middle-gray areas. The results of shear wave velocity were similar statically (P = 0.3087): 1) left adrenal - 1.42 m/s for cranial polar, 1.31 m/s for body region, and 1.71 m/s for caudal polar; 2) right adrenal - 1.42 m/s for cranial polar, 1.74 m/s for body region and 1.63 m/s for caudal pole. Quantitative and qualitative ARFI elastography of dogs' adrenal glands is feasible, well tolerated, easily implemented and may provide baseline data in the study of this structure to allow the use of ARFI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate renal parenchymal elasticity with Virtual Touch quantification of acoustic radiation force impulse imaging in nutcracker syndrome and to compare shear-wave velocity (SWV) values with grayscale Doppler sonography and laboratory findings. METHODS Thirty-eight healthy volunteers and forty-three nutcracker syndrome patients were enrolled in this prospective study. SWV values for both kidneys in nutcracker syndrome patients and healthy volunteers were evaluated. Grayscale Doppler ultrasound and laboratory findings were obtained and compared with SWV values in both nutcracker syndrome patients and healthy volunteers. RESULTS In nutcracker syndrome patients, SWV values for the left kidney were significantly lower than those for the right kidney (n = 43; 1.93 ± 0.43 m/s vs 2.53 ± 0.45 m/s [P < .001]). Healthy volunteers' SWV values for both kidneys had no statistically significant differences. There was a statistically significant difference between nutcracker syndrome patients and healthy volunteers for the SWV values and body mass index values. There was no statistically significant correlation between SWV values of nutcracker syndrome patients and age, gender, glomerular filtration rate, body mass index, vein diameter ratio, peak velocity ratio, or resistive indices. CONCLUSIONS Acoustic radiation force impulse imaging offers new, additional information on the affected left kidney parenchymal changes in nutcracker syndrome patients.
