To efficiently treat rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) in wastewater, MIL-101(Cr) was prepared by hydrothermal method and encapsulated with phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40, abbreviated as PTA) to form an S-scheme heterojunction PTA@MIL-101(Cr)-x (P@M-x, x = 50, 100, 150, 200). The experimental results showed that after 180 min under visible light at pH 7, the degradation rates of RhB and TC were 97.81% and 99.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, the cycling experiments have showed that the P@M-100 S-scheme heterojunction exhibits good stability. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations theoretically verified the experimental results and elucidated the electrons migrate to MIL-101(Cr) and hole enrichment on the PTA surface. It was also revealed that the P@M-x photocatalyst belongs to the S-scheme heterojunction. Moreover, •O2- and h+ had been identified as the main active constituents during the photocatalytic degradation process. The synergistic effect of MIL-101(Cr) and PTA enhances the visible light absorption of P@M-x S-scheme heterojunction, resulting in more efficient electron transfer ability and faster photoreaction rate, thereby improved its photocatalytic performance. This study provides a potential solution for addressing aromatic pollutants in water.

In this study, the performance of a zero-gap flow-through reactor with three-dimensional (3D) porous Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt anodes was systematically investigated for the electrocatalytic oxidation of phenolic wastewater, considering phenol and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as the target pollutants. The optimum parameters for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol and 4-NP were examined. For phenol degradation, at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L, initial pH of 7, NaCl concentration of 10.0 g/L, current density of 10 mA/cm2, and retention time of 30 min, the degradation efficiency achieved was 95.05%, with an energy consumption of 15.39 kWh/kg; meanwhile, for 4-NP, the degradation efficiency was 98.42% and energy consumption was 19.21 kWh/kg (at an initial concentration of 40 mg/L, initial pH of 3, NaCl concentration of 10.0 g/L, current density of 10 mA/cm2, and retention time of 30 min). The electrocatalytic oxidation of phenol and 4-NP conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetics model, and the k values were 0.2562 min-1 and 0.1736 min-1, respectively, which are 1.7 and 3.6-times higher than those of a conventional electrolyzer. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to verify the intermediates formed during the degradation of phenol or 4-NP and a possible degradation pathway was provided. The extremely narrow electrode distance and the flow-through configuration of the zero-gap flow-through reactor were thought to be essential for its lower energy consumption and higher mass transfer efficiency. The zero-gap flow-through reactor with a novel 3D porous Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt electrode is a superior alternative for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of three carbon-based electrodes: bare multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), SnO2/MWCNT, and PbO2/graphene-nanoribbons (PbO2/GNR) composites, as anodes for the electrooxidative degradation of Rhodamine B as a model organic pollutant. Anodic electrooxidation of Rhodamine B was performed on all three electrodes, and the decolorization efficiency was found to increase in the order MWCNT < PbO2/GNR < SnO2/MWCNT. The electrodes were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). It was proposed that, in the 0.1 M Na2SO4 applied as electrolyte, observed decolorization mainly occurs in the interaction of Rhodamine B with OH radical adsorbed on the anode. Finally, the obtained results were complemented with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of OH-radical interaction with appropriate model surfaces: graphene(0001), SnO2(001), and PbO2(001). It was found that the stabilization of adsorbed OH-radical on metal oxide spots (SnO2 or PbO2) compared to carbon is responsible for the improved efficiency of composites in the degradation of Rhodamine B. The observed ability of metal oxides to improve the electrooxidative potential of carbon towards organic compounds can be useful in the future design of appropriate anodes.
