Natural plant fibers (NPFs) have emerged as a sustainable alternative in the manufacture of composites due to their renewability and low environmental impact. This has led to a significant increase in the use of natural plant fiber-reinforced polymers (NPFRPs) in a variety of industries. The diversity of NPF types brings a wide range of properties and functionalities to NPFRPs, which in turn highlights the urgent need to improve the properties of fiber materials in order to enhance their performance and suitability. This paper provides insight into the processing mechanisms behind NPF fiber treatments, exploring how these treatments affect the mechanical, thermal and environmental properties of NPFRPs. It also offers a critical assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of physical, chemical, biological and nanotechnological treatments. The findings of our analysis provide a basis for the development of future treatments that aim to enhance the material properties of NPFRPs, thereby increasing their competitiveness with conventional synthetic fiber-reinforced polymers. Finally, a novel thermoplastic resin composite system, Elium-NPFRP, is proposed that embodies the principles of green development. The system has been designed with the objective of capitalizing on the environmental benefits of NPFs while simultaneously addressing the challenges associated with the integration of NPFs into polymer matrices. The Elium-NPFRP composite system not only exemplifies the potential of NPFs for sustainable materials science, but is also a practical solution that can be implemented in a diverse range of applications, spanning automotive components to construction materials. This has the potential to reduce carbon footprints and promote a circular economy.

Short flax fibers have been modified by radiation-induced grafting using methacrylate monomers containing phosphorus to give them a flame-retardant character. Two methodologies, namely pre-irradiation and simultaneous irradiation grafting, were examined. Certain parameters, notably the dose and the irradiation source (e-Beam and γ rays), were evaluated. The grafting efficiency, in terms of phosphorus content (mass percentage), was measured by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). Using simultaneous irradiation, 2.39 wt% phosphorus could be obtained from 10 kGy, compared to 100 kGy in pre-irradiation. Furthermore, for similar phosphorus levels, the location of the grafted polymer chains was different for the two methodologies. The effect of phosphorus content on thermal properties and fire behavior was evaluated on a microscopic scale using a pyrolytic flow combustion calorimeter (PCFC) and on a laboratory scale using a cone calorimeter. It was then pointed out that flammability was linked to the phosphorus content and likely its location, which is associated with the radiation-induced grafting methodology, showing that the grafting conditions influence the final fire properties. Simultaneous irradiation, thus, proved to be more interesting in terms of efficiency and final properties.

There is a wide range of renewable materials with attractive prospects for the development of green technologies for the removal and recovery of metals from aqueous streams. A special category among them are natural fibers of biological origin, which combine remarkable biosorption properties with the adaptability of useful forms for cleanup and recycling purposes. To support the efficient exploitation of these advantages, this article reviews the current state of research on the potential and real applications of natural cellulosic and protein fibers as biosorbents for the sequestration of metals from aqueous solutions. The discussion on the scientific literature reports is made in sections that consider the classification and characterization of natural fibers and the analysis of performances of lignocellulosic biofibers and wool, silk, and human hair waste fibers to the metal uptake from diluted aqueous solutions. Finally, future research directions are recommended. Compared to other reviews, this work debates, systematizes, and correlates the available data on the metal biosorption on plant and protein biofibers, under non-competitive and competitive conditions, from synthetic, simulated, and real solutions, providing a deep insight into the biosorbents based on both types of eco-friendly fibers.
