Abstract
This study investigated the effect of Urtica dioica roots etheric extract (UDEE) on oxidative stress, and urine obstruction with histopathological examinations of prostatic and renal tissues,and suggests computational methods as a complementary method, to make a hypothesis on the overall effect of UDEE in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was utilised to characterise UDEE.BPH was induced in rats through daily subcutaneous injections of testosterone propionate. Rats were also orally administered UDEE or a vehicle. After four weeks, prostate weight, urine output, and biochemical markers were evaluated. UDEE treatment demonstrated significant regression of prostatic enlargement, improved biochemical and histopathological characteristics, and regulation of antioxidant activity levels. Phytosteroids stand out, act by inhibiting 5α-reductase and aromatase. This study provides an insight into treatment of BPH, demonstrating safety of this compound towards the kidney compared to finasteride without severe side effects.

Abstract
This study was designed to explore whether aquaporin 1(AQP1), P53 and P21 can be used as diagnostic biomarkers of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and potential indicators of sepsis-induced multiple organ injury. Bioinformatics results demonstrated that AQP1, P53, P21 was dramatically elevated 6h after Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-AKI in rat renal tissue. The expression of AQP1, P53, P21, NGAL and KIM-1 in kidney were increased significantly at first and then decreased gradually in LPS-induced AKI rats. Histopathological sections showed swelling of tubular epithelial cells and destruction of basic structures as well as infiltration of numerous inflammatory cells in LPS-induced AKI. Moreover, the expressions of AQP1, P53 and P21 in heart were significantly increased in LPS treatment rats, while the AQP1 expressions in lung and small intestine were significantly decreased. The level of NGAL mRNA in heart, lung and small intestine was firstly increased and then decreased during LPS treatment rats, but the expression of KIM-1 mRNA was not affected. Therefore, our results suggest that AQP1, P53 and P21 is remarkably upregulated in LPS-induced AKI, which may be considered as a potential novel diagnostic biomarker of Septic AKI. NGAL may serve as a biomarker of sepsis-induced multiple organ damage during the process of LPS-induced AKI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Upregulation of the sodium glucose co-transporter (SGLT2) is implicated in acute renal injury (ARI) progression and is regulated by extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1α) or prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). This study aimed to assess the possible protective effect of nebivolol on renal ischemia/reperfusion (IR) and glycerol-induced ARI targeting SGLT2 via modulating the ERK-HIF1α pathway. METHODS Rats were divided into control, sham, IR or nebivolol-treated group, in which rats were treated with nebivolol (10 mg/kg) for 3 days prior to the induction of IR. The rats were subjected to renal ischemia by bilateral clamping of the pedicles for 45 min, followed by 24 h reperfusion. Another group of rats received the vehicle or nebivolol (10 mg/kg) for 3 days followed by injection of 50% glycerol (8 ml/kg, IM) or saline. Kidney function tests, systolic blood pressure (SBP), oxidative stress markers [malondialdehyde (MDA) and NADPH oxidase] and kidney levels of nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), HIF1α, ERK phosphorylation and PGE2 were determined. Additionally, renal sections were used for histological grading of renal injury and immunological expression of SGLT2. RESULTS ARI rats showed significantly increased SBP, poor kidney function tests, increased oxidative stress, iNOS, NO, HIF1α levels, decreased PGE2 and ERK phosphorylation and upregulation of SGLT2 expression. Nebivolol treatment protected against the kidney damage both on the biochemical and histological levels. CONCLUSION Nebivolol has a direct renoprotective effect, at least in part, by down-regulating SGLT2 possibly via modulating HIF1α, ERK activity and PGE2 production.

Abstract
CONTEXT Several therapeutic effects such as antioxidant and blood glucose-lowering activities have been reported for Peganum harmala L (Zygophyllaceae) (PH) seeds, Rhus coriaria L (Anacardiaceae) (RC) fruits, and Urtica dioica L (Urticaceae) (UD) leaves. OBJECTIVE This study investigates the effects of a triplex mixture (1:1:1) of these medicinal plants on metabolic and histological parameters in diabetic rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Aqueous extracts of PH, RC and UD were administered as either monotherapy or in combination at a final dose of 200 mg/kg to alloxan-induced diabetic rats by daily gavage. Biochemical parameters including blood glucose, liver function-related enzymes, lipid profile, and creatinine were estimated by spectrophotometric methods. Tissues from the liver and kidney stained with hematoxylin/eosin were histologically examined. The results obtained from the exposure groups were compared to either healthy or diabetic control groups. RESULTS Compared with the diabetic control rats, all aqueous extracts (ED50 = 11.5 ± 2.57 mg/ml) led to significant decreases in the levels of ALP (1.39-2.23-fold, p < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (1.79-3.26-fold, p < 0.05), and blood glucose (1.27-4.16-fold, p < 0.05). The serum concentrations of TG was decreased only by treatment with UD and triplex mixture (1.25- and 1.20-fold, respectively, p < 0.05). Among the studied parameters, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), LDL-C, TG, and creatinine recovered to healthy control levels after 4 weeks of treatment with the extract mixture. CONCLUSION This study showed that PH, RC, and UD extracts, especially their combination, had significant antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, and liver and renal damage recovering effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In our study, we investigated the effects of methylene blue (MB) on histopathological changes in renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-one Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided equally into three groups. Group 1 (control) was administered intraperitoneal saline solution. In Groups 2 (untreated group) and 3 (MB treatment), the renal arteries were clamped, and ischemia (for 1 hour) and then reperfusion (for 4 hours) were applied. Thirty minutes before ischemia, the untreated group received physiological saline, whereas the treatment group was administered 30 mg/kg MB through an intraperitoneal route. Blood samples were drawn, and renal specimens were harvested 5.5 hours after physiologic saline injection in the control and immediately after the reperfusion period in the other groups. The levels of tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), plasma urea, creatinine and ischemia modified albumin (IMA) were measured. Moreover, the histopathological damage score of the renal tissue was determined. RESULTS MB significantly alleviated the severity of histopathological damage by increasing the levels of tissue SOD and TAS and decreasing TOS concentrations in the renal I/R model (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Administration of MB in renal I/R damage may play a protective role.

Abstract
Our hypothesis in this study is that desferrioxamine (DFX) has therapeutic effects on experimental lung contusions in rats. The rats were divided into four groups (n = 8): control, control+DFX, contusion, and contusion+DFX. In the control+DFX and contusion+DFX groups, 100 mg/kg DFX was given intraperitoneally once a day just after the contusion and the day after the contusion. Contusions led to a meaningful rise in the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in lung tissue. MDA levels in the contusion+DFX group experienced a significant decline. Glutathione levels were significantly lower in the contusion group than in the control group and significantly higher in the contusion+DFX group. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in the contusion group were significantly lower than those in the control group. In the contusion+DFX group, SOD and GPx levels were significantly higher than those in the contusion group. In light microscopic evaluation, the contusion and contusion+DFX groups showed edema, hemorrhage, alveolar destruction, and leukocyte infiltration. However, histological scoring of the contusion+DFX group was significantly more positive than that of the contusion group. The iNOS staining in the contusion group was significantly more intensive than that in all other groups. DFX reduced iNOS staining significantly in comparison to the contusion group. This study showed that DFX reduced oxidative stress in lung contusions in rats and histopathologically ensured the recovery of the lung tissue.
