Incidence of cervical cancer among women of reproductive age still remains significantly high. In regard to prognostic features and risk factors, the standard treatment for most types of cervical cancer represents a combination of surgical treatment and radiation therapy, such as external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy. Despite significant advances of long-term oncological outcomes, radiation-induced secondary malignancies among cervical cancer survivors are still an issue. Current case report describes an incredibly rare case of radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma of the rectum, which occurred 32 years after cervical cancer treatment.

A 62-year-old female had a past medical history of FIGO stage IIB cervical cancer (squamous cell carcinoma pT2bN0M0). In 1987, she underwent radical hysterectomy with bilateral iliac lymph node dissection, followed by adjuvant radiation therapy-70 Gy external beam pelvic irradiation followed by 30.5 Gy of brachytherapy. Thirty-two years later, she presented with signs of rectal bleeding. Regarding past medical history, radiologic, endoscopic, and pathologic data, the patient was initially diagnosed with a malignant nonepithelial lower rectal tumor of the unknown origin and staged as mrT3a mrN0 cM0. Total mesorectal excision with complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation (CME/CVL) carried by an open approach was carried out. In an attempt to identify the tissue of origin, an immunohistochemistry assay had been performed. Tumor cells showed a high rate of mitotic activity with a 45% rate of Ki-67 expression, positive reaction for desmin, and SMA in all samples. Negative reaction for CD117 and S100 was observed. As a conclusion, the immunophenotype was identified as a grade 3 leiomyosarcoma (ISD-code 8890/3).

We suggest that up to date, radical surgery with curative intent, as it was performed in our study, is the most evidence-based treatment option for patients with radiation-induced sarcomas of the rectum.

Radiation associated sarcoma is a significant consequence of cancer therapy. Incidence of radiation associated sarcoma correlates with overall radiotherapy exposure. Prognosis is generally poor with 5 year survival rates lower than that for spontaneously occurring sarcomas. Surgical management presents many challenges including having to work in irradiated tissue planes while trying to achieve negative margins. We present a patient with a rare radiation associated pelvic sarcoma whose course illustrates the complexity of this problem.

- The induction of malignant diseases is one of the most concerning late effects of ionizing radiation. The topic of this study deals with skin tumors developed in the irradiated areas in children given X-ray therapy for tinea capitis.

- All patients with malignant tumors of the scalp referred to Salah Azaiz Institute between 1970 and 2001 have been questioned in order to determine if there had been a prior X-ray irradiation for tinea capitis, its modality, and its consequences. The first scalp irradiation goes back to 1922 and the last was performed in 1963.

- Ninety-eight patients with 150 radio-induced cancers of the scalp following irradiation for tinea capitis are reported (1.5 lesion per patient). The patients were irradiated in various hospitals and dispensaries throughout the country. Eighty-one patients (82%) had only one session of radiation. The average age at irradiation was 12 (+/-6) years, the latent period for radiation-induced skin cancers was 36 (+/-14) years. In 61 patients (62%), the scalp appeared normal and in 38% radiodermatitis was noted. Patient age at diagnosis of malignancy varied from 20 to 83 years with an average of 47 years. Basal cell carcinomas (125 cases) and spinocellular carcinomas (16 cases) were the most common, three other cases of annexial tumors, two malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and four melanoma lesions are also present. Radiotherapy was used for the treatment of 74 patients (alone in 42 and associated with surgery in 32 patients); 14 patients had exclusive surgical excision.

- Basal cell carcinomas are the most frequent tumors arising on chronic radiodermatitis. In spite of the long latency period, patients' young age at irradiation explained the occurrence of these cancers at a relatively young age. Literature review is suggesting recessive mutation of tumor-suppressor genes as the characteristic abnormality in radio-induced cancer.

Single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis was employed for the direct visual display of genetic variability in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments within and among populations of Echinococcus granulosus from the People's Republic of China and from Argentina. Fragments of the NADH dehydrogenase I gene (NDI) and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) were individually amplified from parasite DNA by polymerase chain reaction, denatured and subjected to SSCP analysis. Using NDI and COI fragments, samples representing different genotypes could be readily identified based on characteristic SSCP profiles. The results demonstrate the utility of SSCP for the direct visual display of nucleotide variation in mtDNA of E. granulosus prior to DNA sequence analysis. The approach compares favourably with existing genotyping procedures and provides a reliable and technically reproducible method for the routine laboratory identification of Echinococcus isolates.
