Routine pathology revealed focal gallbladder wall mucosal shedding, infiltration by a large number of acute and chronic inflammatory cells, hemorrhage and necrosis, and a multinucleated giant cell reaction. All of these findings are in accordance with xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis.
