A preserved balanced microbiota supports effective immune responses, infection resolution, and mild or asymptomatic disease (eubiosis). In contrast, disruption of the microbiota (dysbiosis) contributes to failed immune responses, hyperinflammation, cytokine storm, multiorgan failure, and severe disease or death.
