Osmoreceptor activation in the hypothalamus and subsequent vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) release from the posterior pituitary increase renal water reabsorption via V2 receptors and aquaporin-2 channel insertion, restoring extracellular fluid osmolality and osmotic equilibrium.
