Receiver operating characteristic curves show the predictive performance of procalcitonin, C-reactive protein levels and white blood cell counts. The combined model (procalcitonin + mixed effusion) demonstrated superior predictive efficacy (area under the curve = 0.912) compared to the individual markers.
